Title: Nieuport 27 wing undersurface color
Post by: oldalbie on October 09, 2016, 09:43:38 AM
I'm starting a Roden 1/32 Nieuport 27 and the instructions call for aluminum doped undersurface color on the wings and tail.  I think they should be CDL though.
Any thoughts?  I'm doing the #12 "Kitty cat" scheme.  Thanks.

Sorry you haven't received a reply to this yet, as I'm curious as well.

Hi and thanks Warren.  I just went with CDL on this for a couple of reasons, first:  I think it might be a more logical choice with late 5 camo finish a la N. 28, second:  I'd like to finish it before my 73 y.o. eyes can't see it.  Besides, I never worry too much since my skills won't be used to compete for the "Model of the Century" award.
I just want to be somewhere in the historically accurate ballpark.

Always was under the impression that the 17s on up that were aluminum had it overall, topsides and undersides, but would be really interested if research is showing differently now....

Yes, mid and late production Nie.17's had enduit metalaise/aluminum dope, but remember the French Air Service went with five color camouflage in what, Late 1917?  I believe the latter Nieuports followed this trend.
