Title: Rigging a 1/72 Albatros D.V
Post by: steveb on July 30, 2016, 02:03:36 AM
I’ve never done rigging before, & I’m trying to plan the painting strategies. I have been searching quite a bit, read quite a few things, but I’m still looking for suggestions.

From what I’ve read, some people drill blind holes in the upper wings & through the lower wings while others drill through both. Since this is 1/72 scale, I won’t be using eyelets & tubing, just Uschi thread.

Also from what I’ve read, some leave the top surface of the upper wing & the bottom surface of the lower wing unpainted until after rigging is completed. Others suggest painting everything & touching up after rigging.

For the Albatros D.V, I am thinking of drilling blind holes in the bottom surface of the upper wing, gluing in the thread, & then assemble, pulling the thread through holes in the lower wing. The paint scheme is mauve/green on upper surfaces & light blue on lower surfaces. A potential touch up problem may be where the rigging goes through the wing stubs near the fuselage since those will be varnished wood.

Does that seem logical? Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,
Steve

Sounds good to me although personally I drill through both wings. The lower wing shouldn't be a problem as you describe it, as the rigging attaches to the end of the wing, not the stub section. Drill it right at the joint of the two parts not through the wood finish part!

Thanks!
Ian, this is what I was talking about, the 2 on the metal plate shown here. Like you said, the others are in the joint.

In 1:72 scale no-one is ever going to notice the difference....

I'd do them all at the joint, or just drill it at an angle, so it comes out at the joint!
