I've been away too long as my modelling mojo seemed to come and go like a will o the wisp in a gale but I'm starting this build next week.
I've got some after market parts from Mastercaster and this will be my first venture into this scale.

Undecided atm.

Toby,
Looking forward to following this one; I've seen "mixed" reviews on the Mastercaster Set and I'll be very interested in your assessment of it. I have the Hobby Craft labeled version of this Kit and keep delaying it's start pending finding some A/Market goodies for it. I'll be following your progress with great interest.
Cheers,
Lance
-
I think I'll be cherry-picking bits from the Mastercaster parts tbh.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, Lance.
Good luck with the build Toby.
Best wishes

Toby,
Excellent choice of projects my friend. The MasterCaster set isn't too bad actually. But certainly no shake and bake item either. I thinned the interior side pieces as much as I was comfortable with and thinned the forward fuselage quite a bit. A lot of extra work yes but came out well in the end. You may already be aware that the forward fuselage is too wide straight from the box. Just hold the fuselage halves together with the cowl in place and you'll see what I mean. I sanded down just the forward sections to fit the cowling. This the correction mentioned in Windsock way back when Hoobycraft first released the Nieuport. I also used the MC cowl a long with a Vecter LeRhone engine. If you go that route be prepared to thin the cowl down to almost paper thin. I nearly forgot you'll need to fabricate the exhaust channel behind the Le Rhone.
I'm looking forward to following along on your Nieuport project .
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Let's hope that this will help to restore your enthusiasm: a little success with a build can often be a wonderful stimulus. Keep us posted as this will be interesting to follow.

Thanks Adam. That will prove invaluable although the first picture threw me somewhat. ;)

Thanks Andonio. I will add you build to my reference list along with Adam's
-
I found the relevant Datafile for Nieuport fighters and will be using that for reference.
I've also ordered some paint from Misterkit and guns from Gaspatch. Just started to wash the parts prior to priming so should get under way tomorrow. For some reason I don't have the instructions for the Mastercaster parts but I'm not sure how much I'm going to use of them anyway. Certainly the seat but looking Adam's and Andonio's links it might be a selective hotchpotch of parts.
-
One thing I've noticed is that there are decals and PE for an instrument panel yet nowhere on the instructions is it shown where it goes and on both Adam and Andonio's build links they have no IP at all. Did the 17 have an IP as such?
-
No IP at all. Just a couple instruments hanging off of fuselage structure like the curved bar in the front of the cockpit.
RAGIII

I don't know why they include a panel. Perhaps some modern replica used for reference?

I started with a fairly straightforward item first. The prop.
I used Lifecolor cocoa first and then dry brushed Tamiya linoleum deck brown on top with a final coat of Vallejo wood grain followed by gloss varnish. I used Vallejo steel with a black wash for the centre hub but it looks better in the flesh than under flash . Honest :)
Tomorrow I will start on the engine for which I have great plans.
-
Today I started on the engine. It's a le Rhone 9J
(https://s32.postimg.org/4n8gea5v9/Le_Rhone_9_C_OW.jpg)
I used Vallejo steel mixed with some Vallejo metallic black and a black wash for the crankcase and aluminium with a sepia wash for the pistons.
Next up the exhausts and there is a slight gap at the top of the cylinder head that will have to be filled
(https://s31.postimg.org/696njw5d7/IMG_6810.jpg)
I'm using Tamiya dark copper for the exhausts and then fill the gaps with CA glue. Hopefully this will work. I was thinking about cutting off the top of the inlet pipes and adding some fine plastic piping but as they'll be hidden I didn't think it was worth the extra effort. I may do spark plug leads as well and again they are hidden but.......well I'll know they're there :)
-
I used glue N glaze in the end to fill the gaps at the top of the cylinders with the inlet pipes.
Also the rocker actuating rods are too thick and didn't line up with the rockers at the top of the cylinder heads.
So I cut them off and will use .4mm styrene rods to replace them
I decided to add spark plug leads as well

Great work on the engine, Toby!

Thanks Bud.
The engine is now done. Shame most of it won't be seen but I've learnt a lot in doing it. First time I've built in this scale.

Thanks Adam
Started work on the Mastercaster cockpit kit. I used Vallejo Madeira natural wood with and an umber wash and Vallejo aluminium.

Lovely work on the propeller and engine Toby and the cockpit internals are starting to look really good.
Des.
-
I like the wood on the cockpit sides and floor. Well done to date!
RAGIII

I could see that the rear skid could easily get knocked off and lost so I decided to pre empt the inevitable and store it for a later date.
As I'm using the Mastercasters detail kit I had to remove the locating lugs inside the cockpit as they prevented the new side walls from fitting flushly.

Some more work done on the cockpit
(https://s10.postimg.org/ur1jezebt/IMG_6840.jpg)
Unfortunately a small spar on the left hand side broke off and vanished into the great unknown, aka the carpet, but as it won't be seen anyway I'm not that fussed on its impromptu disappearance.

The weaponry has arrived.

The IP on a 17 was limited to I believe just one gauge(correct me if I'm wrong) and I managed to lose the one that comes with the cockpit upgrade. Fortunately I have some bezels from HGW and gauges from Airscale so I've made my own.
Obviously some fettling is needed before fitting.

Nieuport 17 has wooden amo boxes, I've made this picture in Army Museum in Brussels.

I've hit a problem with lining every thing to enable the cockpit to be installed in one piece so I de constructed it and I'm going to do it in stages.

First class work on the internals Toby.
Des.
-
Excellent interiors and a lot of valuable informations out of the linked Iwik and Andonio Nieuports. I'm looking forward to see the rimaining work. Best wishes.
Giuseppe
-
Just catching up on this - excellent work and very careful attention to detail. The interior may not be very visible when the model is complete but what can be seen will look very realistic.
Stephen.
-
Toby,
This thread just keeps impressing my old friend. I love the shade of her wood works, not too dark and very realistic in appearance . I encountered the same cockpit fit issue as you. I ended up thinning the fuselage once again to get it to fit properly. In hindsight it would have been easier to have build the cockpit up as separate pieces . Have you test fitted the cowl to fuselage yet? I read about this issue in an old Windsock from when the kit was first issued by HobbyCraft. I followed Ray's suggestion to get the cowl to fit correctly, which worked out well. But be advised thinning the forward fuselage to fit the cowl will cause fit issues when using the Master Casters interior. Keep up the outstanding progress.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Starting to install the cockpit. Some tidying up to be done but a lot of it won't be seen.
-
It looks as though you have achieved a very good fit on the interior. Very nice work! Looking forward to the next update.
RAGIII
-
Cockpit looks great.
I think everyone has the same problem as you with invisible parts. ;)
Adam.
-
I wholly agree with Adam - but at least you know that it is there.
Stephen.

Life has taken over recently what with all the warm weather but back to the bench now. Fuselage sealed up and painted.

To get some contrast with the aluminium finish on different parts I used Vallejo aluminium for the nose with a gloss varnish with a grey wash for the inspection hatches.
For the fuselage itself I used Misterkit French aluminium with a satin varnish.
The stitching on the engine is the PE set that comes with the kit and I have made a bit of a ricket with it as the stitching isn't quite as pronounced in real life and in a way i should've stuck with the already embossed pattern but I didn't. Anyway time to start on the rest now.
-
The aluminium finish looks very good indeed. Never mind about the stitching - most people would not notice unless you pointed it out.
Stephen.
-
I am enjoying watching your progress. The Aluminum paint came out terrific! Like Stephen said not many would notice the stitching if not pointed out!
RAGIII
-
I've decided to go with the Raoul Lufbery version of this. I checked out the other options and tbh the decals looked very oversized especially the "French" cross that goes on top of the fuselage. It was way too big and would've gone down the side.

RAGIII

Some really great work there, Toby! Looking good...
Marc
-
Looks good. I like this scheme very much.
Manni
-
Thanks chaps
I did buy the Gaspatch Vickers to go with this but I thought I'd save that for another day so I'm going to scratch build one from the gun that comes with the kit.
I've added the barrel bib and cocking handle and will attach an extended cocking lever later. I'm assuming both handle and extended lever were fitted on the A/C although I'm leaning to it was one or the other with the extended lever taking precedence in this case. If so the cocking handle will go.

-
I am looking forward to seeing the completed MG!
RAGIII
-
I'm not completely happy with the M/G as CA glue has obliterated some of the detail so may have to resort to a Gaspatch version also I'm not using the PE on the struts as quite frankly they are a poor fit and I think I can do better with the brush.
I used Vallejo light wood with Vallejo wood grain top coat for them
(https://s18.postimg.org/3plahd3jt/IMG_6945.jpg)
-
Oh wow, there's another Nieuport 17 in the making! Again I missed a fascinating built until now, but from now on I'll follow closely. Great progress so far and a striking N124 sheme!
Borsos
-
Not overly impressed with the decals as the central roundel is separate to the rest and measuring it to get in the correct place is an unnecessary bind imo. Also they need a lot of decal softening to get them to sit right.
-
Those transfers look OK to me. In all this is coming on very well. It has the makings of a real gem.
Stephen.
-
The roundels look great! You seem to have managed perfect registration of the center circles.
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys. I have completely given up with the decals on the tail They just won't adhere no matter what so I'm going to paint the stripes on instead. Should give a better finish anyway.
-
Toby,
Don't get too discouraged with the decal situation, at least your have the logo on the fuselage, the rest can be "scavenged" from spares or similar A/M Sets. I swear, the first thing I do on opening a Roden Kit for the first time is fling the decals into the nearest garbage receptacle! I don't understand why they've had this problem since "day one", their Kits are very decent but I've found the decals really are a waste of space!
Like you I'm finding this one a bit of a challenge, if I finish the cockpit module this week I think I'll shift back to the Hansa Brandenberg W.12 Build I have going in parallel, if only for a change of pace.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lance, I did look at alternative decal options but couldn't find any. Even Phoen don't have one for the Nieuort which is a shame as their decals are excellent. Thankfully they have loads for the plethora of Roden kits I have. :D
-
Toby,
If it's French cockades you need take a look here:
www.kiwiresin.com
The Lafayette Escadrille Sheet has two complete sets for the Ni. 11 that fit, and coincidentally the same Indian Warrior logo from Robert Soubiran's Ni. 17. I haven't used them but they look pretty good.
Cheers,
Lance

Just for the record Toby, I have often had issues using rudder stripe decals. I have gotten in the habit of matching the colors as closely as possible and painting the stripes.

Maybe it is worth to dare and make masks.
In my Nieuport 17 I have made masks for roundels and rudder, even the number on the fuselage is painted by means of mask.

Adam.
-
Thanks Adam.
Slow progress which will get even slower as I'm off to Cornwall for the week.
Engine now on and then I'll start fixing the wings in position.
After that the rigging will begin and then the question to turnbuckle or not to turnbuckle. Tbh I've never fitted them before and also not sure which ones to use. I shall decide over Cornish pasties, cream teas and pints of Tribute. Not necessarily in that order. :D

A lot more progress with the M/G and lower wings attached. They are slightly floppy but that will be sorted once the top wing in is place. I also need to adjust the belt box and feed slightly on the M/G so it makes contact with the bodywork. CA glue should hopefully do the job. The engine nacelle was a not an exact fit but that's one problem with the kit that I couldn't address properly and in hindsight I should've gone for an aftermarket one but what's done is done. Hopefully I can hide some of the problem with some weathering

Unfortunately during the setting of the top wing the lower wings have moved slightly away from the fuselage so some dexterous filling will have to be negotiated.
-
Things have taken a turn for the worse as my painting of the tail colours has gone horribly wrong. I now have to strip all the paint off and start again.
However I can console myself with doing some rigging. Never thought I'd ever say that. :o

Sorry to hear of your trouble with the rudder colors Toby. I am sure you will sort things out! Your wings look good to me, can't see the separation in the photos.
RAGIII

She's looking very nice Toby, great progress. Mine hasn't been touched in several weeks as real life events continue to rule out any amount of bench time, I hope to get going again next week, I hope your difficulties with the rudder colours works out to the better, she's a real little gem!

A very attractive looking model Toby, I'm sure that you will overcome the rudder issues.

That is looking super Toby. It seems that your mojo has returned which is a good thing. Never mind about the rudder - at least it was not attached and can be corrected in due course.
As Ondra has written, making mistakes is one way to learn - just wish that there were others that are less frustrating!
Stephen.

A lot of the rigging done. I've even tried to fit some turnbuckles. My first attempt so very much an upward learning curve for me. I suspect they're not 100% accurate but I'm using the cheaper kits I've got for experimenting on before embarking on more costly items.

A lot more done. U/C on and rear rigging fitted. I need to paint the rear skid having replaced it after cutting it off to avoid it breaking off during the build.

Lewis gun painted but might need some attention as I over weathered it.
Top wing decals applied. These are really awful and far too thick to soften even after copious amounts of Microsol resulting in them breaking up rather moulding themselves to the features. Again something to address before finishing up.

Overall I'm fairly happy with it and have learnt a lot. Thanks for all the encouragement and links that have helped me immensely with this.
Here are some pictures and when I get time I'll post some slightly more picturesque ones in the completed forum. I don't think Nieuport's natural habitat was a spray booth. ;)
