Title: Encyclopediae on british and french aircraft?
Post by: stefanbuss on June 23, 2016, 06:00:44 AM
Friends,

while discussing on the Nieuport 11, I recognized that my knowledge on allied a/c is shallow, optimistically described. Not enough to feel comfortable any longer.

Is there a kind of encyclopedia available for british and/or french aircraft? I am interested in a kind of technical description in the way that Jack Herris has chosen for the Luftstreitkräfte aircraft series (i.e. short technical descriptions, some photos per type). French or english language would be ok for me.

Of course I am aware of the Datafiles, but buying all those is way beyond my limit.

Proposals, please?

Stefan

Hallo, there  is a "British military aircraft of world war one" by RAF museum series with official technical and rigging notes.
It depicts 26 planes with technical data and wiring diagrams (with flat RAF rigging references), some photographs and drawings.
I bought one and I found it to be interesting.
Regards, Giuseppe.

"Jane's Fighting Aircraft of World War One" is a good reference book, it covers all aircraft and not just allied models, it's a big book with heaps of photos, don't know if it is still available though.

Might be found somewhere for a better price...

Great books don't forget "British aeroplanes 1914-18" by j.m.Bruce. crowood has a good series one is on royal aircraft factory stuff one is on neiuports etc. Then you have the other flying machines press series one is dehavilland part one and two which covers dh-1 thru dh-10 or more .salmsom aircraft  too which covers not only the 2a2 but most production salmson stuff .

I'll reiterate Borsos' recommendation: the FMP book on French a/c is a great "one stop shop" if it can be found at a reasonable price.
