Hi Folks, I've had a couple of WnW Pfalz models under construction for a while and thought I'd post a couple progress pics for interest. The DIIIa is one that I'd ordered the extra decal sheet for years ago, and would be the wartime scheme of the model Bertl Skorpil crafted so beautifully and described on this site. The DXII will be scheme "A" from the instructions sheet with the old style tail and blue nose, tail, and wheel covers.
I've used Aviattic's cookie-cutter 5 colour lozenge decal sheet for the DIIIa, and the DXII had to be hand made using the faded lozenge, The comparison photo of the top wings shows a nice colour variation between them. There's also a comparison photo of the lozenge decal provided by WnW. I much prefer the look of the Aviattic product in this case.
Hope to have these kits completed soon, but am in no rush and enjoying every moment of the builds. Except for perhaps the rib tapes ;)
Cheers,
Gary

Both are gorgeous! Your black fuselage is extremely well done! Perfect application of the lozenge. I am Impressed to say the least!

Nice work! The lozenge and the paintwork is first rate!
-
What a great double build, Gary! The DIIIa has a gorgeous colour scheme and
the D.XII's engine is just superb...the extra piping and magneto wiring is a real
bonus to an already beautiful machine. I don't know how you are managing a
"2fer", but you are doing a terrific job and I am looking forward to more updates,
my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Rick, Kreston and Ernie - thanks for your encouraging words. Glad you like the builds so far. The 2-fer that you referred to Ernie was actually a 3-fer when I started the Eindecker, but it helps to have a few things on the go so that progress can be made while one sub-assembly waits for paint/decals/glue to dry. With these two progressing well it's time to break open another from the stash...just not decided which one yet 8)

Gary

Gary,
Both are looking mighty fine! Your all black weathered scheme is really well done, just enough chipping and wear to look well used but not overdone. By coincidence I'm starting to cut lozenge for my D.XII today as well, and looking forward to using the faded Aviattic too, but the tapes.............not so much!
The engine on your D.XII looks terrific, are you leaving it uncovered? Mine will be completely "buttoned up" so I've kept the detailing to the upper portion only. Both lovely Kits however I think the D.IIIa was more appealing.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance, and thanks for your kind words. The engine will be buttoned up but I wasn't sure when I was at the detailing stage how it would end up. Here's a couple more pics. I agree about the appeal of the D.IIIA - beautiful lines!

Great, Gary.
Thank you for showing.
The Pfalz is still on my "Oh, please honey, it will be sold out soon and If i don't get one(or two) my Soul will fade away-List"

Great Pfalz's! :) I am deeply impressed by your striking overall finish, they are really masterpieces!
Borsos

Manni, Bob, Rick & Borsos - thanks for your comments! I was hoping to get them finished for our big Edmonton show last weekend, but family commitments come first. I hope to post some updates soon after finishing the tedious job of putting rib tapes on the D.XII wings.
Cheers,
Gary

A small bit of progress to report from my last post. Hopefully I can be attaching the wings and manage the rigging on both soon!

Beautiful, very beautiful, Gary! You're doing two of my favourite German WW1 planes in my favourite schemes: Thank you!
Richard

Late to the party, Gary. Man...those are lovely. Subtle and yet such distinct depth. Super models.
I agree...two of my favorite WWI jobs! Thanks for sharing.
Dan ;)

Both looking very nice Gary. I see you've opted for the full edge tapes on the lozenge of the D.XII, I found full, partial, and "None" finishes in the hundreds of photos so opted for leading edges and tips only on mine, still not sure what to do on the elevators. I really like that subdued blue on the tail, nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance
-
The Pfalz twins are just superb, Gary! Your paint work and decaling are flawless...
I love the blue on the D.XII. I am completely enjoying the build and will certainly
be using it for inspiration when I get to my D.XII. Great stuff, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Gary,
marvellous, both of them. A question on the D.IIIa, if i may: the red fuselage stripe has to small stripes left and right of it - what colour are those supposed to be? Silbergrau (as in "original fuselage colour") or white? There is a strong difference towards the white part of the Balkenkreuz, which confuses me...
Stefan
-
These are looking absolutely amazing, Gary! Can't wait to see the top wings on.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks so much to all who have commented!
Lance - I've re-sprayed the blue a couple of times since you saw it at the Edmonton show since I just wasn't happy with it.

Thanks Stefan. To answer your question, the lighter coloured stripes on either side of the red is silbergrau, as you'd guessed. I masked and spray painted the stripes as opposed to using the decals provided.

Both models are looking superb Gary, the painting and decal application is flawless.

Simply WOW.
Curious. Which paint and clear finish did you use?

beautifully.I admire painting Pfalz D.XII. :)

Simply WOW.
Curious. Which paint and clear finish did you use?
Thanks Cajun - I used Tamiya acrylic paints for all of the airbrushing, including their clear gloss to seal larger areas for decaling and other masked stripes etc. I ran a brush with Future floor finish over each of the Pfalz D.XII rib tapes, since each one of them was a strip of WnW lozenge over the base lozenge of Aviattic and they didn't adhere that well by themselves.
The details are brush painted with Valejo acrylic. Anything that has to resemble brass is painted with Testors enamel gold, and then (well after it dries!) toned down with diluted raw umber oil paint.
Cheers,
Gary

Gary,
I have been away a couple of days so just saw your update. Beautifully painted and decalled. I absolutely love the black DIIIa. Perfect weathering and tonal differences!
RAGIII

Gary, those are both gorgeous! If I can get even half way to those results with the DIIIa in my stack I will be happy.

Hi Folks,
A few updates on the two builds...
I finished rigging the D.XII and had to add a few details to the front end. I usually pull tension on the EZ-Line with copper soldering clips
Although the bullet rails aren't apparent in the clear wartime photo of this one, I added them regardless... along with the vent tubing coming from the engine up to the upper wing, and the front "square" gunsight.
For the D.IIIa I put in the vent tubing tied to the engine coolant line, and had to add some bullets to the MG feeds using some Dragon Models figure set bullet belts from their 1/35 range. The left MG on the D.IIIa had a cocking pull-string that went through a hole in the small windscreen.
I used the RB Productions etched brass turnbuckles on both kits.

Wow! They are both superb Gary, and apparently you work a lot faster then I do! The shading/highlighting on the XII really catches the eye and the blue you concocted is really well done. This is quite a pair. Also great to see the "magic third hand" in action, I'm looking forward to mine's "debut".
You're a very brave man to try those RB Turnbuckles, I lost my nerve and traded mine off early in the game. I'd be interested in your assessment of them.
Cheers,
Lance

This is a good example why i like the D.XII so much - it has "the look" for me. Very well done.

They are both superb Gary.congratulations. cabane and wing struts you painted tamiya xf-80?.

Wonderful, Gary!

Beautiful work, Gary ;)
A pleasure to behold.

Really great looking Pfalz planes, you are creating two beauties! I especially like the chipping on the D IIIa fuselage.
Borsos
-
Absolutely superb work, Gary! The wear shown on the D.IIIa is extremely
well done and you have really brought "basic Black" to life. As much as I
admire the D.III, it's the D.XII that has stolen my heart. You have really
created a jewel there!
On the D.XII, did you use a "panel line wash" of some kind around the access
doors and other panels? And that gorgeous blue...is that straight XF8, or a concoction
...hopefully not secret? Very well done on the rigging and decaling. Not much else
I can say other than you have made up my mind as to what paint scheme to do.
Beautiful work, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Both models are looking gorgeous Gary, you did a great job with the rigging on the D.XII.
Des.
-
My thanks to all who replied - your comments are very encouraging!
Lukasz - yes, I painted the struts and cowlings on the D.XII XF-80 as called out in the instruction sheet.
Ernie - glad you like the blue, wasn't so sure myself when it turned out the way it did! It's a combination of XF-8 and a lighter colour (Buff or Deck Tan, can't remember which) to tone it down. This was airbrushed over a very dark brown base which was a poor idea to give it some tonal differences and pre-shade. I still have to work on it since it didn't turn out as I'd like. Yet. Also - you are correct - I added a thinned oil paint wash to the detail on the silbergrau base after I'd protected it with gloss. But I'd also given each detail a touch of "Smoke" with an airbrush to help emphasize the effect. Such a plain colour needs some enhancement.
Cheers!
Gary
-
Extraordinary work, Gary! I'm looking forward to the completion of both.
Cheers,
Bud

Gary,
Two absolutely beautiful Pfalz fighters my old friend. I'm quite impressed with the D.III's black paint too. It's really tough make the black look alive rather than dull and monotone, you've nailed it perfectly. Well Done Gary! Looking forward to following along with the outstanding project.
Highest Regards,
