Hello All
After much encouragement I am starting my first ever build thread, on my second plastic plane in some 40 years. This is after the 1/24 Airfix Spitfire finished a couple of weeks ago and not counting a quick build 1/72 F16 undertaken as a glue 'bonding' excercise with my very young son a decade ago!
I hope that this thread will help me improve my skills and standards and I hope it will also be a help to others new to this hobby and help pass on any tips and tricks as I learn them. Small things that most of the experienced readers take for granted or can't even remember they have learnt but which could maybe assist others. Hence the title.
So , here we go then .... With the obligatory box art...

I have in mind a slightly different colour scheme, Leslie Holdens all red beastie whilst with No 2 Squadron Australian Flying Corps.

For reference I have also attached a photo of the MERIT Parts listing and the the first instruction steps

And..what the heck..one of the Spitfire ;D

Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I'll follow your build. A beautiful Spit !! Will you build the typhoon ? A wonder !
So, little secretive, you tried to hide Millenium Falcon.... ;D
Best regards.
Alain.

So, the state of play...Cockpit and basic fuselage frames complete...some firsts and learning ;
Micro Sol is indispensable in setting the small dials, also no matter what else I tried the only way with the instruments is to slowly cut around the diameter with a sharp knife.
Wood grain simulation is not too hard although a long way to go but with acceptable first results, need at least two days for the oils to dry at least here in Oz.
I use super glue in thin and medium in my RC planes, first time I have used super glue gel and for this type of modelling I like it, it seems to adhere even if the part has the oil paint on it...I have not yet tried normal Tamiya glue when the part is painted..maybe I should just standardise on the Gel and use 5 min epoxy as and when needed.
Photo etched rudder straps wee als a first, small steps with phtoetching but a start nevertheless !
Pre planning is critical as is trial fitting. When I fitted the assembly into one fuselage side and then joined the other I found the top curvature of the instrument dash was preventing the sides closing, the long pump also had to be slightly lowered and repositioned... I suspect this is a reflection of my building skills not the kit. The trial fitting also allowed me to establish the angle of the back rest behind the seat so it fits snugly into the fuselage side and is not proud, without a trial fit I would have probably glue this in at 90deg or close to.
I also found that for much of the longerons etc it was probably smarter to assemble , glue and paint rather than the reverse order, especially as most of it will not be visible.
Also re brush and paint management I have started using a large jar to hold the residue after cleaning brushes etc,I don't have a sink in the Man Cave and this has saved endless trips to the main house. I have also found that my airbrush management was vastly better at the end of the Spitfire build compared to the beginning. Cleans ups of the airbrush resulted in what looked like a chemical warzone around my bench during the first few attempts.
Next steps will be critical ..closing the fuselage sides, probably later this week after everything has had a proper chance to try.
Feedback , thoughts and advice always VERY welcome.
Also , any advice on how to source or arrange for 1/24 scale decals for the chosen colour scheme would be appreciated.
Happy Days for now

Hello Alain
Not secretive, I did not build the Millineum Falcon..not my thing...but my 16 year old son did ! :D
His skills are superb with not much modelling experience, the Falcon was the simple Revell snap together kit but his painting and weathering skills have transformed the look and feel of it....he is VERY artistic and creative.
He surprised me the other day, walked in with a very large box, the Revell giant Millienum Falcon kit... 904 parts.... He had sourced it himself second hand direct from Texas, with his own money from his part time work and jobs....he stated it will take him 2 years to build..at 16 ..not sure if I am proud or terrified.

You have made a great start with this kit Dino and what you have done so far looks very impressive, the wood tones are very realistic and the instrument panel is very well done. I've heard a lot about this kit and I'm looking forward to following along with your build, the red colour scheme should be very striking.
Des.
PS. beautiful Spitfire.
-
Hello,
wonderful first steps in modelling on your Se5a and a brilliant Spitfire. Very fine!
And congrats to your son, too, his skills are impressive as well! (I think pride would overwhelm the other feelings, isn't it? ;). )
If the drying of the oils takes too long for you, there's "Uschi van der Rosten" on the market (just google it and you'll find his eshop). Alex offers a very good drying medium "Blitz dry" (yes, he makes ironic fun out of that "Blitzkrieg" terminology...), that shortens drying time for oils to just 3-5 hours.
Best wishes

Very nice so far and the spit is a delight, I'd kind of thought about getting this kit but it got slated but from what I see it looks very workable, I like the seperate framework idea a lot. I'll follow your blog with interest.
One thing I'd suggest is to download the WNW instructions from thir website, it will give you better insight to what is what. The firewall between the cockpit & Engine shoul be in aluminium not wood. Their colour all out is more accurate than Merits it would appear.

Lovely Start, there Dino! I'm looking forward to more... from what I can see it has great potential...

Dino,
Wonderful start and, if finished to the standard of that beautiful "Spit", it'll be a real winner! Your first attempt at woodgrain, the interior, and the detail are all excellent. You seem to be cruising very comfortably through this journey already, don't forget those crucial "dry fits" at every step; it's so much easier to deal with adjustments before the glue's on! As for glue I use CA Medium and Thin with accelerant on 90% or more of my joints always ensuring that paint on the joining surfaces is removed
Keep up the great work, nicely done so far.
Cheers,
Lance

Brilliant start, Dino! This will quite a stunner when done. Awesome Spitfire!
Cheers,

Great start, Dino. The SE5 will be a great model when done. Your wood effects
are very good and I think Keith's advice about using WnW's instructions is sound.
Superb Spitfire, by the way, my friend!
Cheers,

I agree with the others completely. Very nice start! Your wood is looking great. Also like the others my compliments on the Spitfire!

Welcome aboard, Dino; I'm glad you decided to share this with us. The Spit tells me you you are going to do just fine!

Great stuff Dino,
Looking good already and, like the others, am interested in seeing how the kit pans out..

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone.
Not much done since the last post but I have cut out the triangular inspection panels on the top and bottom wing halves, the plastic was quite thick so I beveled some out on the inner side of each wing which. This also gives a narrower profile to the edge of each opening if someone ever looks at it...but as my son says to me. 'But YOU will know' ... So in that spirit I have painted the firewall in Aluminium as suggested by Kornbeef, even though you will have to look hard to spot it :)
I have also cut out the rectangular inspection hatch on the Fueselage. I have attached some photos including of the Fueselage and sprues to give an idea of the overall kit.
Next steps, probably on the weekend , is joining the Fueselage halves, eliminating seams, adding tail feathers....I am keen to get on with the build as one of the main learnings I wanted on this project was the Rigging..this should be interesting.
Some questions and advice though please..
1) I'd like to make some seat belts, no after market options that I can see re 1/24 does someone have a link or advice
2) Epeeman if you are reading this ... how did you treat the pulleys and control wire visible via the inspection hatches,I would appreciate your or anyone's advice on this.
3)Also does anyone have a contact for getting some decals done in my preferred scheme , I am thinking if I order them now they should be ready when the build is finished.
Many thanks Dino

thanks for those sprue shots Dino. Looks a mixed bag, some nice detail and some crudely done areas. I must say its tempting to get one myself but might plump for the Fokker, wrong engine or not. Or one of each for the stash... lol
Looking forwards to your next informative post.

Like Lance said the photos show some really nice detail and some not as good. It seems you are well on your way to making this one look great! As for your questions:
1. Most if not all War Time SE5as' used a simple lap belt, not a Sutton harness as often is depicted. I think WNW instructions show this arrangement. Use paper, Lead foil from a wine bottle, or as one modeler recently showed us, Tea Bags to make the belt. I think some wire bent to shape would work for the buckles, perhaps augmented by some plastic sheet as needed.
2. Two simple disks of the right diameter with a smaller one in between and wire leading in the right direction should suffice. To simulate the clear covering either very thin clear plastic, scotch tape, or as Bud did in 1/48th, fill with a good clear drying epoxy.
3. I know there are decal makers out there but can't think of one now. On the other hand someone recently posted a link to Miracle Masks, a very practical idea for painting the markings in 1/24th.
http://www.freewebs.com/miraclemasks/
I hope this helps and am sure others will chime in.

Here is the link to Borsos' Albie build where he used the tea bags for his seat belts:

As you can see, they look fantastic. The tricky bit for you might be finding the photo-etch parts, but as I am not familiar with the 1/24 scale market, perhaps this isn't an issue.
Good luck, everything looks great so far.
Chris

As Chris has said, using tea bags for the seat belts gives a very realistic fabric effect to the belts.

Hello Everyone, time for a short update, progress has been slow..I did warn you ...but my excuse has been that we have had some fantastic mild Autumnal weather here in Sydney and I have been out flying my 1/4 RC Piper Cub and Extra ( couple of flying pics attached)
Anyway back to work....Fuselage halves have been joined, I had a very troublesome time with the top forward section not quite fitting snugly, also had to notch some of the bearers in the assembly to ensure a snug fit of the halves. Again don't take this, or the abundance of filler, as any form of shortcoming in the kit, much more probably it is my skills. Also in the process of ensuring a fit of the headrest back into the turtleneck I was forced to remove the wood staining in that area. I have not yet redone it but I am getting quite comfortable with my skills in this area so I am not too concerned.
All the ailerons, elevators etc have been joined and the tail feathers added, the elevator and Rudder are only blue tacked on at this stage ...should I paint them separately or whilst on the model?.....I am thinking the later but would welcome advice into what the 'normal' process would be.
Glued a number of other bits and pieces such as undercarriage and wheels which will be put aside until later.
I need advice on how to tackle the rigging especially the turnbuckles as after extensive searching there seem to be no after market turnbuckles in 1/24.....a link to a how to or any other such advice would be most welcome.
I will use Bo's technique on the machine gun, and Will follow BErtls tutorial for treatment of the exhaust.
Finally I am torn on paint schemes... I am really attracted to the all red of Leslie Holden as per Post #1 but I wonder if it may be 'too much red' .... I am thinking of a light misting of white and some strategic weathering will tone it down a bit.... however a traditional scheme as per the model box art will provide more of a challenge re developing skills pre shading, rib caps trips etc etc....what do you all think ?
Anyway, there is progress !!

Dino,
I use 1:48 Scale GasPatch turnbuckles for my 1;32 models as I find the 1;32 product too large in appearance but the 1;48 version looks "just right". I wonder if the 1:32 ones might just prove the right size for your 1:24 model, I'd certainly look into it.
This Build is progressing very well, nicely done so far!
Cheers,
Lance
-
He'll everyone...some progress....
Fuz is joined, as are all the wing halves and tail feathers I made some pulleys for the wings from filed down bolt heads but these are not visible under the liquid masking.
Struts are stained as are the exhausts and all parts are undercoated.
An issue I have is that my chosen scheme belongs to a Wolsely version whereas the Merit kit is a Hisso... It won't be exactly accurate but sine the photos I have filled the indents at the front and rear of each cylinder which the fairings would have covered, the engine will be fully exposed ... the cylinder heads and radiator grills are slightly different but I can live with it.
A local decal maker is preparing quotes for the side and tail decals....we shall see otherwise I will be practising my hand painting skills !
A question, I think I need to preshade between the ribs at this point so the all red will have some 'depth'....... Should I use a Black or a Reddy Brown?...can anyone give me a link to a thread where something similar has been done.
Many Thanks Dino

Hello Gregory, thank you for thinking of me.
Progress is slow but good, I have taken the opportunity at weekends to fly a bit more of my radio control aircraft.
I have done a lot of reading re pre and post shading the ribs to get the right effect and have decided on white pre shading as per the photos.
I actually tried black and a subtle brown base coat between the ribs and then sprayed with red but did not like the effect, I also tried some mixing wth the red as to my eyes it seemed too bright, this will be cured with some Tamiya white mixed in.
I have also cleaned up the recesses from the engine bank covers.
Anyway painting will probably take place this Sunday so wish me luck :)

Hello Everyone
Well a bit of a milestone, main colour is down. Initially added a couple of drops of Tamiya White to the Tamiya red but this went too off white, a surprise how strong the effect was so I went back to the red straight out of the bottle.
The preshading effect has come along OK. Not quite what I wanted but acceptable ..what do you all think?
Oh ..another lesson...I cleaned and packed everything up and then I noticed it...yep two ailerons sitting there on the bench in primer saying ..... 'Paint Me'. 'Paint Me'.
Next week say I :)

It's been awhile but a belated hello to everyone.
As per the usual challenge other things have taken priority recently but a visit to the Sydney Scale Show yesterday provided the final spark to get back into it. So I went straight to what I saw as the biggest obstacle, the Fueselage side marking 'A'.
( no; I had the pleasure of meeting Steve who also frequents this site and viewed his lovely Roland and Rumpler.)
After a bit of masking and some freehand painting attached is the result. It's not perfect but I think it's good enough that I can progress to next steps.
Tomorrow night I will add the roundel and spray a coat of clear and then onto the rigging ! Unresolved is how to undertake the serial number on the tail fin but I will leave that to the very last I think.
Cheers DIno

Well....its finally finished.
I always wanted to complete this model. apart from an innate desire to see it finished the main reason was in honor of Des and as my way to say thank you and 'tip my hat' to him so to speak.
It was very poignant for me to return to this thread for a final post and noticing that the last entry was from Des :'(. Somehow its made it feel right.
So my hat off to you Des and thanks for your encouragement and enthusiasm.... I'm sure you are looking down on all of us mate. :D
This model presented some challenges.......
- my first WW1 model with the associated complexities of making eyelets, rigging, wood staining for the propellor etc. I found the alignment of the struts and wings a nightmare the rigging less so.
- I also changed the shade of red mid build and subsequently lost my preshadng detail, this was only exceeded by losing the sprue with the photo etched parts so dont go looking for the gunsight ring and a couple of other details.
- its also my first time scratchbuilding some items such as control horns, fuel cap, lewis trigger cable, pulley cables (not really visible) and pitot tube.
- During its period of storage , one of the bottom wings had become detached so required a certain amount of repair.
- hand painting the A and kangaroo on the side which I researched and completed and then found additional references which showed them to be slightly mishapen .... !
- my first attempt at a diorama base and bench and some scratched built 'tools'
- and finally I was keen to try some weathering with the model being a tribuite and depicting a tired 'end of its life' instructional airframe used by Les Holden MC AFC on the home front after his tours of service.
I had hoped to finish it by ANZAC Day here in Australia as a tribute to Les and the diggers but just missed it by a couple of weeks. That sentiment is unchanged though.
Anyway whats important is it completed, far far far from perfect or even a high standard but I sure learnt a lot. This could belong in any number of threads ..... the original thread or the Shelf of Doom, or the lockdown threads but could I request it be moved to the Des Delatorre Memorial thread please ?
Anyway , whats next ?
I have already started the Merit 1/24 Fokker DR1 Triplane for a bit more practise then on to the build I promised to also complete for Des...my Hasewaga 1/8 Museum series Fokker DR1....oh dear ;D

That looks great! Congrats!

Excellent results from a Kit that is less than perfect! I think Des would have loved your results and the Firsts in making the base and table!

That's great, love the little work bench! That must be a big imposing kite on display.

The scaled down plans are, what is it y'all Britts call it, oh yeah, the Bees Knees. Definitely. I really like what you have done with it.

Congratulations on a very nice finish, very impressive and in 1:24th probably even more so in real life. You've got it all, finish, detail, rigging, and construction;not bad for a "Beginner"! ;) ;)
I'll leave it to Dave to move this per your request, I don't have that function and he does the "Magic" stuff. Des would indeed be proud of this one, and for very good reason, and so should you!
Cheers,
Lance

That is a super model: as others have written the table, charts, tools, weathering etc all make it look very realistic indeed. I too am certain that Des would greatly appreciate that - a wonderful tribute to him.

Thats an excellent SE5a Dinor, a real gem and the first Merit 1/24th SE5a I've seen finished. Your scheme is quite striking and the overall effect is very impressive. I'm surprised we have not seen more 1/24th scale WW1 kits on the market.
Re your request to move it to the Des thread, that was a group build competition board and this was not an entry. The Completed Models board would be suitable if you agree to that.

Dino,
Wow what an impressive bit of modeling my friend. I love that red paintwork! Beautiful tribute to your skill and craftsmanship. Des is certainly smiling down on this awesome model. Well Done!
