Title: WNW 1:32 FE.2B A5650 "Jess" 100 Sqn.
Post by: lcarroll on May 06, 2016, 06:02:58 AM
After 4 months this one is finished! I'll admit with no shame that this was, for me, a difficult Build, particularly in the final stages. It's a complex design, the rigging is considerable, and the model is extremely delicate. I had difficulty determining the final completion sequence as handling to add final touches, parts, and rigging resulted in breaking of previously installed items. I broke and had to repair a wing strut, an aileron control horn, the rudder (at least 3 times!), and both Holt Flares from the lower wing along with several rigging lines. A very slow and pre-studied approach was the rule on this one!
The aircraft is the Kit's Scheme E, and specific mention is made of it's well weathered and very faded finish thus she looks pretty battered. Although I had not intended to build the Night Bomber version of the Fee a reading of "One Spring in Picardy" quickly changed my mind.
The finish is a combination of Tamiya Acrylics, Model Master Enamels, and Vallejo Polyurethane Varnishes. The rigging was also done with a combination of materials: Maxima Chameleon 0.12 mm Mono for the wings, EZ Line for the lattice tail section, and Modelkasten for much of the control lines. The cockpit had Airscale Bezels and Scratch Built controls added and a lot of detail was added to the engine. The bomb release cables were added as well.
On studying the photos I've determined that I am going to do a touch more work on the Bomb Release control panels mounted on the port side of the Observer's Cockpit, other then that I believe she's "a wrap"!

I apologise for the quality of the first photo here, and some of the special effects such as dust and possibly a canine hair or two!

The model fitted into my display case with about 1.5 mm to spare, thus a Felixstowe is out of the question, for now!

Lance

Top notch model, mate!

Your weathered finish looks just right.   The amount of rigging is enough to put me off tackling this one so well done with that.

Truly stunning result Lance - love the weathering, particularly the chipped paint on the nacelle. The engine is a cracking job too. I'll pretend I haven't read of your difficulties as it progressed though otherwise mine may not get out of the box  ;D

Jess is 'jes' fine - all round. Congrats on a really fine build of a very complex subject.

Thank you for commenting, Guys. Dave, the rigging isn't really all that bad, it just takes a bit of time. Tug, I suspect the Kit might offer less difficulty to a younger Builder, there's a bit of "old thick fingers" involved in this process! ;)

war-weary look and your weathering is great.  Well done, my friend.

Outstanding modelling. As others have commented the paint finish is just right - it really does look as though it has been on a few sorties but it is not overdone so that it looks as though it is about to fall apart! The rigging is superb - as you write, there is a lot of it! Reading your build log was areal pleasure too - you have much to teach the rest of us when it comes to painting a detailing.

Stephen.

I fear my comments will merely be echoes of those already voiced, but allow me to add to the cacophony. Really a splendid build of an equally splendid machine. To my eye the signs of usage and wear are spot on and wholly accurate in their degree and execution. And, yes, the engine is cracking, to be sure. I also very much like the colour....or the lack thereof....wonderful. I shall have to put this kite on my list and as a night fighter, to be sure.

Congratulations!

Best regards,
DP

Thank you DP for your very generous comments and for taking the time to do so. The Fee is a splendid machine, I still wonder at the courage of the aircrews that flew them, especially the Observers moving around that shallow nose section and standing to fire the guns! :o

Jess looks magnificent Lance! She's battered and bruised, just as I would expect to see after a considerable number of sorties under her belt. If she was sitting on a display table at a show, my eye would be drawn to her right off the bat. I'm always drawn to the overall effect of a particular model and with Jess, it's definitely the sum of all of the parts. It's easy to see why it took you four months to complete her as this is definitely a complex undertaking, and one to try the patience of any modeller. I tip my hat to you for your perseverance and skill. The end result was well worth the effort my friend. She's one to be proud of, and deserves a prominent place in your display case. Top drawer all the way!

Cheers,

Chris

Justin, more rigging then I had dreamed of, I stopped counting eyelets at 120.......... :o
Dave and Guy, after following your AEG and Felixstowe Builds this little devil would be "mere putty in your skilled hands"!  and
Chris, your comment on patience is spot on; this one did "peg my fun meter hard right" on more then one occasion! ::)

Hi Lance:

Your attention to the small details makes this FEE an outstanding model.  Your 4 months of "dogged" determination, Perseverance and overcoming many obstacles produced one sweet model.   Noteworthy is the attention to the bombs.  Picking out the rivet detail, the weathering and alignment of the ID Stripes, no detail untouched.  The weathering and chipping truly outstanding Lance.
Having read "One Spring in Picardy" as well, I was hooked on doing a night bomber.  I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.  As Chris said, "my eye would be drawn to this right off the bat."  I have been following your work for many years and I dare say this your most outstanding build to date.
When I get to mine, i will be referencing your build.
Best

Mark

Thank you Greg for your kind comments. We are only about a 3 hour drive from the fire location which is, thankfully, somewhat under control. Hard to believe, but a true miracle, that 90,000 people were able to evacuate and there were only two fatalities on the traffic evacuation route; we were very fortunate indeed! It's smoky here most mornings but the worst appears to be over; now the long and difficult road to recovery need be travelled!.

 Lance ,
Miracle is the best way to describe my old friend. I could remember where you had told me you lived, but knew it was somewhere relatively close.I hear from family that the damage was less than being reported but still terrible. Luckily none of Cheryl's family lost their homes or businesses but all to sadly many did. We'll be continuing to pray for all those affected by these fires. Take care my old friend.

Thanks for your kind words Greg. There were 2600 buildings destroyed by the wildfire, most of them single family homes. It's going to be a long recovery process, and the 90,000 Evacuees are not going to be allowed back for another several weeks. We have over 500 families accommodated here in Cold Lake.

Lance
