After a double detour from my main modelling of WW1 subjects I am finally back to business. The announcement of Airfix release of BE.2c back in the last year was a very welcome surprise. When the kit finally landed in my hands I could not wait to start working on it.
http://www.airfix.com/uk-en/raf-be2c-night-fighter-1-72.html
My general impression is very positive. The overall dimensions, shape, etc are in perfect agreement with scale drawings from WD42. The quality of plastic is also very good - ribs imitation on wings and tailplane are fine, trailing edges thin enough. Even the ailerons, though moulded together with wings have the gravitational drop!
Airfix also took some steps to facilitate the biplane assembly with quite solid pins on main struts and cabane struts having integral pieces of top wing moulded together to ensure a proper geometry. There are also jigs for additional control of main struts assembly. The kit is planned to be easily built out of the box.
The cockpit interior is not so attractive, though. Just basic bits though this does not need to be an issue if one wishes to insert pilots figures - everything can well be hidden.
But since I do not fancy adding pilots I could not stand such basic cockpit. And if you wish to improve it the real problems occur. Starting with overly exagerrated wall thickness - and if you thin it down, all the interior bits with original quite nice tight fit start forming a rattle. Almost everything has to be corrected!
Also, the model represents a generic BE2c case but the Robinson's one had some modifications as is nicely depicted in two close-up photos included in WD42 - there is no hand fuel pump mounted externally at the rear cockpit, the front cockpit opening has a different shape, the instruments layout also seems to be different - yet more field for improvement of the model.
So here is the first report

The tank was too long, cut the central part and glued the outward bits together. Also the slope at the front was too small...

It's great to have you back with the BE.2, Prezmo! Nice to see the improvements
that you are doing which will make the model so much better. The Part seat is
a beauty and will add a lot to your cockpit upgrading. Looking forward as always
to following your build, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Looking forward very much to see how you progress with this - beautiful work so far! I am part way through this kit myself and just trying to tackle the rigging so can't wait to see how you approach it.
I have been looking at as many pictures as I can find and it seems quite clear from the instrument panel and shape of the front cockpit that Airfix have built a model of the plane that was hanging up at the Imperial War Museum Lambeth and which now seems to be either at Duxford or Hendon (or maybe it's back at Labeth - anyone know?) It is interesting how that interrupted coaming on the front cockpit makes it look quite different from many other machines (including Robinson's).
Good luck with the build!
-
Wow Prz, that matchstick is huge! ;) :D :D :D
-
Beautiful work, Przemo! Amazing detail in this scale.
Cheers,

-
Thank you, everybody.
Markleecarter, you are right. There were so many variations of front cockpit coaming, including the fully covered ones, that it would be hard to allow for in one single kit. Funny thing with Airfix is, that they truly depicted non-Robinson non-night-fighter version and then decided to feature Robinson's famous bird as one of two kit decal options. If one really wants to model it, then modifications are necessary - luckily there are those two amazing close-ups of that aircraft ready to inspect in the WD.
And the build was going on in recent days. The cockpit is almost completed, only some electric cables in the rear pit and a few lines running on the walls of the front one are missing - the latter ones will only be added when the fuselage is assembled and the cabane struts together with tank rear wall and the bulkhead are in place - inserting them would ruin any details on the walls.

The fuselage is closed, the missing bits in front cockpit (cables, pipes, rigging) added.
I have cut the pieces of the centre section from the cabane struts and inserted them into the upper wing slots leaving sockets for the struts, the joints filled and sanded.
There is still a bit of front cockpit coaming at its aft to be added - another modification in the Robinson's aircraft.

Prez,
My sincere apologies but I do not visit this part of the site often and I had missed this until now. There is only one word that gets anywhere near to describing this work: beautiful. And that leaves a book unwritten…..
As usual you are providing us all with a masterclass in how to improve what is a basically sound model and in God's Own Scale which is all the more interesting. Looking at the photos I could easily have thought that this was 1/32.
A simple request: please do not get so easily distracted with other non- WW1 subjects - your build threads are always worth following closely and I have missed them recently - including this one!
Stephen.
-
Your build continues to impress as always! Beautiful work!

Prze-Tastic work!

vB
-
Thank you, everybody.
And, Stephen, I promise not to get distracted too often from WW1 related subjects. :-)
And meanwhile, the work on BE.2c continues...
The missing rear rim of the front cockpit I wrote about earlier was scratch built, glued and the surrondings filled, sanded and polished.
I have found out, that the sockets for the interplane struts on the underside of upper wings are too large and they (like the strut pins) have strange elliptic shape in plan view - transverse to the strut aerofoil cross-section. This would lead to nasty gaps around the strut mounting points after the assembly, hard to fill as I like to mount the struts and wings after airbrushing. Besides the landing and flying wires would end too far from the strut connection points. So I cut off the ellipse pieces going too far sideways
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c-55_zpsheb0uije.jpg)
and glued them inside the sockets leaving only acceptable rectangular holes ready to fit the remaining rectangular pins. Needless to say that filling and sanding was required all around here.
Also the sockets for underwing skids protecting the wing tips from damage were far too large - filled, sanded and drilled again with a smaller diameter.
Then some work on the RAF 1a engine started. What kit provides is quite decent. Still I decided to add the missing spark plugs (already there, made from wire bits), later the electric cables will follow. I also wish to add the valve push rods and valve rockers - these bits will come after painting and assembly only. I have also drilled the exhausts outlets. This is how it looks when dry-fit.

very nice engine in this little tiny kit.
-
Truly remarkable work, Przemo, but no less than I've come to expect from your talented hands!
Cheers,

-
Thanks, Bud and Albatros.
Edgar, the cockpit interior would surely profit a lot from a PE set. The engine not so much. Also the horns on the control surfaces and those at the fuselage sides could be done in PE. A resin replacement for the engine is not absolutely necessary but it would surely be better than the plastic injection one in the kit.
-
Excellent update Prez - I am really surprised at the detail provided on the engine - even in plastic and mass produced too. It would almost seem worthwhile buying a kit just for the engine - especially the way that you have added the extra details. This is going to be another of your gems when it is finished.
Stephen.

Przemo,
I am trying to catch up here after just returning from abroad. This is superb work indeed and you are to be commended.
May I also add that I am always quite tickled when I see someone refer to one scale, or another, as being that in which the Creator, Himself, chooses to build models.
Regardless of whence your Guidance comes, I look forward to watching the completion of this diminutive gem...but I hope you will not be tempted to try and complete it in seven days.
Best regards,

Nice improvements on the engine, Prez.
I have a couple of resin engines for the BE2 and may well use one when I come to build mine... but the kit one does appear to be pretty good - particularly by Airfix standards!
Thanks for the heads-up on the strut locations too, that is very handy to know!

Thank you everybody for watching and cheering! :-)
eduard has released a photoetch set for this and the e.iii
I have just looked through their instruction sheet. It seems that they designed the PE elements to fit the kit. Given the horrendous thickness of the cockpit side walls in the Airfix kit the interior bits will probably be too small for the scale. On the other hands the exterior bits like fittings, control horns, etc. would be welcome. (I plan to add these bits to my model using a lot of spare PE bits I have from my previous builds or from scratch)
-
Beautiful work Prezmol!
I have the Eduard PE for this, and yes, some of the interior stuff won't fit but you could still use the seats, control stick and fuel tank parts. (and external stuff of course) I'm not sure what the etiquette is regarding linking to other forums but I have a build going on another modelling forum that I can point to if it's allowed.

Great! And it is not racing, accuracy over speed :-)

Some more progress.
The engine lower cowling with the firewall is attached - some filling and sanding was necessary, especially between its halves. Also the rim of the cowling was treated with a sharp knife to thin down the walls.
The engine tentatively placed to check the fit and the overall impression. That overcowl provided in the kit has a correct dimension and shape, only itsthickness was too large. But some work with sandpaper brought it to an acceptable (for me at least) outlook.
I took some care of missing valve rockers for the engine. A thin wire pieces plus some spare parts left in a PE fret (turnbuckles!!!) put together are to form these bits, which will be partly visible aside the engine upper cowl.
The tail skid support had a nasty pin to embed it in the fuselage bottom and the struts were too thick. Again some surgery to remove the pin and embed it into the massive socket, some sandpaper work on the thick struts, removing the flash, sanding of the fuselage bottom and marking the points for the front struts by some delicate drilling brough this section to a layout acceptable for the scale and ready to paint.
Also the undercarriage was inacceptable in the kit version. The angle between the legs had to be corrected by some delicate bending. The front legs do protrude from side fairings completely neglected in the kit. I added them from pieces of Contrail aerofoil plastic sections. Also these legs themselves had too short section with the aerofoil profile - again Contrail pieces were useful. There is still some sanding and trimming necessary, when the CA glue cures. The rear legs seem to have the correct length and correct layout of aerofoil fragments which do not reach the mounting points in the fuselage.
Additionally, the sockets in the fuselage to accept the u/c legs were too large and on the top of this the rear ones were some 2mm too far to the rear - they should in reality coincide with the rear wing spar nd not be located behind it. I cut the pins from the u/c legs, glued them into the sockets, filled the gaps and sanded everything flush...

Wonderful work as usual. It is surprising how many small details need correcting on these models when the makers have a real aeroplane and very modern technology to work with.
Stephen.
-
Your work with the undercarriage got me worried so after I got home I checked my kit and the attachment point for the front section of undercarriage is correct as far as I can see so I don't know if there is a flaw in the kit you have (certainly in mine I can see some elements have not been moulded as well as some others). Here it is just held in place with blu-tack
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u185/markeecarter/Mobile%20Uploads/_20160524_230814.jpg) (http://s168.photobucket.com/user/markeecarter/media/Mobile%20Uploads/_20160524_230814.jpg.html)
As for the rear attachment point, on the airframe airfix used it is actually a little bit behind the wing spar. This machine used to hang in the Imperial War Museum in London but was recently moved to Duxford. This meant removing the wings so there are plenty of images on the web that give us an excellent view of the fuselage without the wings in the way. Here is a detail of one that shows very nicely the position of the undercarriage in relation to the wing.
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u185/markeecarter/Mobile%20Uploads/14050650381_48818035f9_c_edit_1464126181048.jpg) (http://s168.photobucket.com/user/markeecarter/media/Mobile%20Uploads/14050650381_48818035f9_c_edit_1464126181048.jpg.html)
Of course I don't know if it was different on different machines as it seems there are huge variations in almost every picture I have seen of the Be2c!
-
Thank you, everybody for your kind words.
Mark, I have seen the photos of BE2c from London/ Duxford. It seems that it features an old style front legs attachments. Many photos in WD 42 and the scale drawings therein depict these with aerofoil fairings protruding from fuselage sides, as I tried to depict in my model. Two available photos of cockpit area of Robinson's aircraft also show this element. And as for the rear legs, the photo you showed has them coming to the fuselage just behind the front spar of the lower wings, indeed. I will have to correct this, thank you very much!
-
It seems that finally I have all the necessary bits ready. Now I have to drill holes for rigging and painting can start, at last!
The undercarriage with corrected fairings (rear legs had to be lengthened, too) and wire bits added to the tips to serve as pins...
... which will get into the holes drilled in the side fairings (front) and fuselage bottom (rear) just behind the wing spar, as Mark has rightly corrected me - thank you, again!
And the unit test-fit
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c-75_zpslfvkn0wt.jpg)
The strap securing the main fuel tank was imitated in the kit as a recessed line in a wrong place, too far to the front. I have filled it with CA glue and made my own from a self adhesive tape. In the same way the blinding plate for the small window in front of the rear cockpit (which appears to be covered in Robinson's BE.2c) was made.
Also the kit Lewis, a bit crude one, was replaced with spare bits (probably Roden) and the gun mount is the rearranged kit part to allow arranging the gun in down position, as indicated in the photos from WD showing the cockpit area of Robinson's BE.2c.
I have also scratch built the horns for elevator control and the step to be attached under the fuselage on the port side. In the kit the former ones are simply imitated as surface details on fuselage sides, while the latter is completely neglected.

After drilling all the holes for the rigging I could finally get to masking and airbrushing. Basic colours are on and shaded. Later, after decals, some wash will follow. The engine and its upper cowling are still not completed and are put in place only for these shots.

The upper side of the upper wing will get its colours, decals and shading only after the rigging is completed and the holes for it are filled and sanded flush.
I have also painted the undercarriage pieces minus the tyres
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c-83_zpsfhs5ujym.jpg)
And finally, having read the info from the newest WD on BE2c, I realised that Robinson's a/c as a night fighter had to have position lights and Holt flares. A few basic bits from spare bins will have to suffice, with some paint to be added still

Wow, this model is looking excellent, the painting is superb, very well done so far Przemol.

Some beautiful and precise work, Przemo! Amazing as it's all in 1/72 as well! I am really enjoying the progress of this stunning model! Regards, Marc

I was wondering where this one had got to…. Worth waiting for the update - the roundel shadows on the underwing look ver good - as do the extra details. First class modelling as always.
Stephen.

Your usual high standard of modelling and of painting. I am envious.

The wings with their shading look superb, Presmo. The

Prze,
Wonderful work....... I struggle with ignition harnesses and pushrods in 1:32 Scale, and then I see what you are doing several scales smaller, just amazing! This is going to be even more spectacular when completed.

Mind-blowing! Gob-smacking! Jaw-dropping! :o ...what have I left out? Oh, yeah, :o

Prez, what did you use for the push rods and rockers? They look fantastic!
ian

Thanks, guys.
Ian, I have showed it some time ago, the rockers are PE turnbuckles bent to L shape, the pushrods are pieces of thin wire.

looks great,wonderful small scale detailing

Przemo, did I mention that I really, really, really like your work?
Brilliant stuff, my friend!
Cheers,

Some more...
My friends from Melius Manu did a great job again. The stitching surface detail in my copy of BE2c was almost inexistent on one fuselage half. I decided to remove it totally and thought of using Part PE stitching. But this is too crude. So my ideas moved to decals, Eduard DH.2 in 72nd scale has them quite fine. So I asked Melius Manu for help and they designed something amazing. Thank you, guys!

And I covered the engine
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c101_zpsp2zlqtwj.jpg)
This damned macro photography shows far too much!!! :(
-
Prze, are these decals something they're going to offer up for sale, or just a custom run for you? I have to say, I'd buy these, and any other stitching decals they do in 1/72nd.
Warren
-
No problem in any scale of that decals. Just write us an email: [email protected]

Fantastic update Przemol and those stitches are superb.

I agree with Des! The stitches really look great. I have a 1/32nd SPAD VII to build as a 19 Sq. RFC bird that will need some!
RAGIII

Beautiful stitching, I could definitely use some of that! Email sent.....
Ian

Wow Przemo! There is some beautiful progress there! It's just mind-boggling to me to think it's in 1/72 scale! That fine stitching really adds something... Your modelling is super neat!
All the Best,
Marc
-
It's a beauty Przemol, and the lid on the engine does not prevent the work you did from being seen. Great!
Antonio
-
Best stitching I have seen so far. Truly impressive. And you sell it, Melius Manu, in any scale :) ?
Great work even without the stitching, it looks like 1:32 or at least 1:48.
Wonderful!
Borsos
-
YES! this plans looks just awsome. The details are spectacular espacially the stitching.
Manni
-
Just catching up - and I am breathless in every respect. The amount of detail that you achieve is simply mind-blowing - I cannot think of a better word or phrase. You certainly set THE standard in this scale.
Stephen.
-
I've just chanced upon this build log and looked at it over and over. I'm blown away! I bet the boys at Airfix never imagined anyone would ever make such an immaculate model out of their B.E.2c kit.
regards,
Tony.

Many thanks for so much interest and your kind words.
Anybody interested in stitching decals is welcome to contact Melius Manu directly.
And in the meantime...
Undercarriage with rigging done, tail rigging done, main rigging lines glued into their holes. Everything is ready for the upper wing mounting. It is always making me anxious, keep your fingers crossed...

Prze,
Just simply magnificent! The quality defies the small scale, truly a spectacular result, and not yet completed. The stitching has really caught my interest as I have several Builds in mind that they would really enhance, I've book marked the link for the future.
I really look forward to seeing the completed project.
Cheers,
Lance

Prze,
Watching your builds is always a joy, and they inspire me to get busy on my workbench. I can't wait to see you attach that top wing, thread the rigging, and watch you paint the top wing.
Warren
-
Unbelievable work Przemol! I could never sort out all of those wires !
RAGIII
-
Great job, Przemol, my hat off to your skills!
Cheers
Ondra
-
Now there's a cat's cradle! Good luck with sorting that lot out when the top wing is on - at least there is order there - just need to find it!
Stephen.
-
I have no idea how you manage to sort out that rigging - I could guarantee getting at least a couple of wires crossed over....
Ian
-
Thanks for watching and comments.
Sorting out these rigging lines is not that difficult. Once the top wing is on, the point is to start with the innermost ones - cabane, stagger and then the innermost ones from double flyings wires , parking wires and outer from doubles. One after one after one. It is doable. I pull them through the holes first, then, when all of them are so sorted, I start tightening.
Hope this makes sense.
-
Looking spectacular Przemol, the painting is excellent and the stitching is superb, looking forward to seeing all that rigging put in place.
Des.
-
What a treat for the eyes, Sir!
Reference quality stuff. This is an invaluable resource for building this kit up right, and when I get one or two of these, I will be referring to it often!
-
Wonderful work. The rigging is going to be very impressive when finished.
-
Great work! Just absolutely impressive, awesome ... I am running out of superlatives.
Borsos
P. S.: Email sent for those decals :)
-
Wow, stunning work. The plane will look great.
Chapeau,
Manni
-
Thank you...
The work goes on.
The upper wing went on, I used the cabane struts and the outermost interplane ones first, had to correct a slight "crossing of the wings in the plan view. When the glue set I have squeezed the inner interplane struts, then sorted out the rigging lines pulling one after one through their holes in the upper wing. Then I started the tightening, first with cabane lines, then the outer stagger ones and the inner bays parking wires.

Then the inner stager wires, the inner bays flying wires and the outer bays parking wires

And the remaining ones will follow soon.

The rigging is coming together beautifully Przemol, it will be a delight to see once the rigging is completed.
Des

I agree with Des 100%
RAGIII
-
Sorting out all of those wires was worthwhile. The rigging looks excellent - the model will be even better when complete.
Stephen.
-
The rigging of the wings is completed. I have almost forgotten to include those flying wires in the outer bays which go to the mid span. Luckily, the lines could still be added by gluing them just between the starting points of the double lines and the strut bases.
I have started filling the holes on the upper wing upper side using the acrylic paint pigment. It has to dry and then I will sand it flush, then probably reapply it and so on until the result is satisfactory.
I have also added the Pitot probe on the port outer strut.

RAGIII
-
Just simply beautiful Prze, just beautiful.
Now, as I've asked you before, and I just asked Ian on his build, regarding the clean up"
When you say "paint pigment", are you saying this is the "goop" of the settled paint?
Warren
-
Thank you gentlemen for your kind words.
Warren, my English is not so good to understand the word goop, but what I meant was the sedimented pigment (dense paint) gathered at the bottom of a paint container which I pick up with the end of the toothpick without stirring it. It is still liquidish enough to pour down and fill the hole but simultaneously thick enough to fill the space. Usually I have to repeat the treatment three or four times but I prefer it more than a putty which is hard to put into such a small diameter hole.
-
Prze, your English is 100% better than my Polish, and in this case you were spot on, that's exactly what I thought you meant by "goop". It's a great idea as I don't see myself being able to put putty in such a small hole.
Warren
-
Hi Przemol, first of all my hats off to you for your skills, what you are showing here is really spectacular!
Regarding to filling the holes - may be an extra thin CA glue like Alteco D would do the job. It cures very fast and is thin enough to apply in holes with very small diameter. I use to full satisfaction on my 1/144 builds.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Przemol.
Thanks for the info on how you fill the holes! Much easier to sand than CA I would think! I will have to try this on my SE!
RAGIII
-
Ondra, thanks for the hint on CA. I usually use it as a filler, but as Rick has pointed out, paint pigment is much easier to sand in this instance.
-
Fair point, this method will be more comfortable for sanding.
-
Hello Przemol,
thank you for showing this stunning build, I have always to look if it is 1:32 or 1:72. You are a very skilled man.
Manni
-
Incredible. Such a wonderful Be 2c! A truly great model of this important aircraft.
Borsos
-
Thank you, once more, gentlemen.
Some more steps taken...
The holes on the upper side disappeared after three sessions of filling, CDL paint and some shading
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c117_zpsqcsswjqy.jpg)
The holes remaining on the surface visible in the photos are for aileron control line its horns and pulleys.
Two last decals went on without a fuss
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/BE2c/be2c119_zpsvhybmit9.jpg)
And while the MicroSol was doing its job on them, I have built a specific foldable windshield for Robinson's BE2c. I have used a piece of transparent foil from a spare box (a margin of a foil sheet from the PE set for Felixstowe), folded it, painted the sides in CDL, the black rim is a decal from a spare WNW decal sheet - actually sections of a black border between decals belonging to different versions (!) and the metal folds along the canvas edges - from a thin soldering wire.

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.

Wow, Przemo! There is some really great modelling there! Exquisitely fine detail that looks perfect! I have even shown it to Vanessa and she loves it! Regards, Marc
-
Thank you for your kind words. And Marc, my best regards to Lady V, I am especially glad she has some interest in my BE2c.
ANd BTW, this is most probably the last WIP report. I have completed the paint and weathering finish on the top wing. This allowed me to put the model upside down for the last time and complete all the underside bits - aileron controls, underwing skids, Holt flares, side step and elevator control cables. Then I put the model back on the wheels and completed the elevator upper lines and the rudder lines. Remaining bits are the upper wing aileron cable with its gear, the Lewis, the windscreen and the propeller. But these tomorrow.

Damn!
Sorry for opening an old topic, this is the first place I have found an identification of the engine
I was hoping it was the 70hp Renault
Richard
-
As far as I remember some earlier versions from BE.2 line used the Renault engine.
-
As far as I remember some earlier versions from BE.2 line used the Renault engine.
They did indeed. The CMR resin model has the 70HP Renault, I was hoping the Airfix had the same. The late B.E.2C had the RAF engine
