Title: RAF S.e.5a - 1/32 WNW converted to Wolseley Viper
Post by: kkarlsen on April 07, 2016, 03:38:26 PM
This is my first wwI aircraft 1/32 build = Steep learning curve!

The RAF S.e 5a is my favourite wwI plane, it has been since i watched the 'Aces High' 1976 movie as a boy.
Allthough the planes in the movie are actually Stampe SV4 modified to look like RAF SE5a.
At the time I got the Revell 1/72 S.e.5a kit and was very fond of it.

40 years later, I got around to building the large scale version...

I didn't like the Hispano Suiza radiator front (sorry) So the WNW had to be converted.
I got all the PE sets, from Eduard, HGW and Part, for both the Hisso and Wolseley Viper versions.
But my skills working with Photo etch are limited and I had to find another way to display the radiator.

Kent,
I was drawn back to this feature again; how did you do the broken prop blades? They are excellent representations of splintered wood.
Cheers,
Lance

Well thank you Gent's. You are much too kind! My finishing skills aren't anything close to your's. It requires so much more 'finesse' to build WWI planes, compared to planes of other Era's. Much more than you would imagine! I hope my skills will improve over time?

Broken propeller blades: Well I could have cut a new propeller from wood, but a shortcut was to cut the kit propeller blades halfway, and replace the ends with prepared pieces of 'splintered' bamboo skewer. Glued with CA, filled and sanded...

The things people do to get out of rigging! ;D

Seriously though beautiful work and  very nicely presented.  Echoing the comments above completely.

That is one heck of a first step into WWI aviation modeling and a terrific introduction.  Great job, and welcome to the forums.  Hope to see more of your work here.
