Hello everyone!!!
So Santa landed here bit earlier and dropped some WNW... alongside of Pfalz D.IIIa and Albatros D.Va landed 'Hisso' that I bought for one particular reason... my wife's grandfather is celebrating 90's birthday next year and SE.5a is his favourite aircraft - I can't think of anything better than little diorama with his favourite aircraft and some figure displayed in glass box with some print (possibly will try to get Ronny Bar and his profile signed from him) that could make a better gift...
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah126/lukaskasuba/WNW%20Hisso%20-5135_zpsscia7edu.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/lukaskasuba/media/WNW%20Hisso%20-5135_zpsscia7edu.jpg.html)
Got some aftermarkets from HGW and Gaspatch already and ordered Aviattic linen this morning :) Possibly Drooling Bulldog paint for upper surfaces will be used ;)
Looking forward to share this adventure with all of you!!! :) I know I still have another two projects going on here but I need some WNW love to keep me going :D

That is a lovely gesture Lukas, I'm sure that your wife's Grandfather will be as thrilled as punch to receive this as a gift, looking forward to seeing you start the build. With all your other builds you are going to be a very busy man :)

Having a reason like this for building the SE5a is wonderful, Lukas. Good luck with it.

Lukas....No shortage of WnW love on these pages...this will be an excellent build to follow....Lay on, MacDuff!

That's a nice reason for a new build Lukas - done this twice now for two relations and the pleasure gained from seeing the recipients response is so so gratifying - your grandfather in law will be just the same I'm certain.

Thank you all!!! Some pictures from cockpit should appear here very soon!!!

Your fuselage wood work looks outstanding! You are already tempting me to pull out my WNW SE5a ;D As for the wing structure I will do a little digging but my instinct says ply covered with fabric. I could be very wrong so Again I will look at some reference books ::)

Very nice progress on this SE.5a, Lukas.
One question - did you remove that imitation of internal bracing from cockpit sides?
And as for your question on upper centre-section, the TVAL site has an answer coinsiding with what Rick already wrote:

Thank you, Lukas for the reply. It will certainly look much better with replaced bracing. I have this kit in my plans for this year and I will do the same.
One more question, yet, about the instrument panel - have you added some aftermarket bezels? Your version looks fantastic, very much improved when compared to the original kit part.
BTW, I have bought this kit only recently and as a relative late comer to WNW frenzy I am shocked how they managed to improve the quality during these short years of their existence in the market. Even the instruction book for SE.5a, as rich as it is, looks so modest when compared to those in newer kits, like Snipe I am currently building.
-
Lukas,
Your wing is turning out very well! Very nice usage of the Linen decals. Sorry I didn't get back to you to confirm the Center wing structure. As stated and shown in the link it was ply covered with fabric as I thought. Only the SE5 aircraft as originally designed had a different arrangement prior to removing the fuel tank from the topside of the upper wing and making it internal, along with mounting the Lewis on top. This change required the ply to secure the tank and gun to.

Prze! Hello again, no problem with replies ;) I did use aftermarket bezels from HGW and some from Airscale + I have old puncher set that I used for getting that glass for the instruments - nothing that you wouldn't be able to produce ;)
Same with me, I bought this one just before Christmas and agree with you 100%, those new ones are so different... I guess WNW future will be only brighter :)

Hi Lukas, No that's the shop in London - I live about eight miles from the Hannants warehouse in Oulton Broad in Suffolk. A very large place indeed and one in which you can feel your wallet draw inwards as you pass the portal :D
I would say Hannants are quite unique in allowing purchasers to wander at will among the countless shelves. Filled to the brim with kits of all scales, not to mention the after market stuff we 'locals' count ourselves lucky indeed for such a privilege on our doorstep. I have spent many a happy 'five minutes' lost in there I can tell you ;)
Keep up the great work - looking forwards to more updates

Hello my fellow friends!!!!
As I promised, with submarine finished, I finally moved back to make some progress on my SE.5... applied PC10 from Drooling Bulldog and also some insignia using paint from same brand. Some mishaps happened on bottom of the wing but I decided to cover it up with patches of linen that will represent repairs. It still isn't finished as there is still washes, varnishes and weathering to be done and more importantly there is still the letter "K" that will need to go on the top - that Im also planning to cut out from masking tape.
Huge thanks to Ondra who volunteered to produced masks for insignias, massive thanks to Mr Sergej Von Mertens for creating blue and red shades for insignias and big thanks to Richard from Aviattic for his fantastic decals!!!

Hi everyone!!!
Thank you (as always ;) ) for such a great feedback... Im humbled and very happy at the same time for receiving such a great support ;)
For Lance and Chris, here is a quick rundown to "my" technique on aluminium panels. I adjusted a bits to what I found couple years ago in "Modelar" magazine that comes out every month in Czech Republic in one article about WNW D.VII done by Zdeno Bugan (just to give credits to where I found it, not sure if it was his or someone else idea)....
Basically I apply any kind of surfacer (usually black or grey) based on what tone of "base" aluminium I want. Then I use gunze super metalics or Alclads that I create surface that is resistant to another weathering techniques. Then I use AK interactive chipping solution - I still didn't come with exact layers that result in desired finishes but Im trying to get there - usually I just apply few thin layers and let it dry. Then I apply matt varnish, I use Tamiya but more anything on acrylic base will do the job - I tried it with Gunze H, Valejjo and Micro Matt from Microscale. Then I use AK chipping solution as I did previously. After this I apply thin layer of any acrylic grey paint - in this scenario it was tamiya XF-20 but again, you can use any other acrylics. Then I let it dry and simply use brush and water to wash of those layers which creates the patern. Thats where it get tricky because quite often I get unrealistic surfaces so I just wash all of and re-do it again. After all this I use mix of oil paint, white spirit and Uschi's blitz dry to come that alive and make all that surface come alive. Then you can just play around it with more weathering techniques and use pigment fixer or varnish to lock that in.
Hope that makes bit of a sense. If not, just drop me a message and I will try to do my best to help ;)

What a beautiful built. A real piece of art! This is going to be my no 1 reference for my Se 5a built. What kind of thinner are you using with the drooling bulldog paints?
Borsos

Rick, thank you so much ;) I think you are always first! I am ashamed I don't post to your builds as much as I wish but following them anyways ;)
Ernie, thanks my friend for stopping by and have a look, always appreciate it ;)
Borsos, following your Albatros D.I and that is an art itself too - getting quite itchy fingers with mine but trying to be good!!! As for Drooling bulldog paints - best results I accomplished using gunze leveling thinner or in some instances "just" gunze C thinner - hope that helps ;)
