Title: Wingnuts 1/32 Albatros B.II
Post by: Pgtaylorart on December 10, 2015, 09:06:05 AM
I told myself I would wait to start on this until other things were finished, but I couldn't help myself! This is supposed to be about having fun anyway, right? I don't need to add rules and pressures. I have a few weeks off for the holidays, so here goes!

The start of clipping the Albatros B.II cockpit parts off the sprues! :D

But first, the obligatory box shot:

It's officially started! 8)

George,
Sounds like a good way to spend some time off. Have you decided which one you're going to build yet?

My favorite seems to be everyone else's that I've talked with; the one on the box art and in the kit build on WnW site. Option C. I really like the darker wood with the red trim. Looks very rich.

I just realized I'm going into this more blindly than I usually like to. I have two books on order but they haven't arrived yet. Oh, well, there's alway Google images, and I have a lot of parts to clean up and prime first anyway.

I don't seem to ever go completely OOB. I just ordered Aviattic Light German Linen decals. I'll use Gaspatch and von B turnbuckles. I just received my copy of the WS Datafile so I'm researching further details now for maybe a bit of scratch embellishment. But other than that, I don't think there is much else to add to this kit.

Now that's what I call a holiday project, George! It sure beats mine of raking up the millions of leaves which drop on our plot of land/garden.

Good luck with the build. I'll be following with interest, like many others, and, as they say round here "bonnes vacances".

Best wishes
Nigel

Go George,

Looks a super kit. Will be very interested to see how she turns out. Are you going with the kit's wood decals? How do they look in the flesh? Everyone else's seem to be transparent, but the kit ones seem opaque?

I'm suffering at the moment from lack of modelling fever as we are moving house next week - so my whole set up is currently boxed up!  ???

Have fun!

Guy

Hi Guy,
The kits wood decals look very nice! I'm not seeing a lot of grain and pixelization that the W&W ones had. I haven't used them yet, but they seem to be pretty opaque. They look great on the model on WnWs website. I've started with the cockpit so I will be using them on the interior to start with soon. I'll keep you posted.

Glad to see you starting this one, George.  Looking forward to following along and picking up a few pointers.  I'm itchin' to get going on mine, but I've got a DFW and a French subject to finish first.
Cheers,
Bud

I signed up for the French GB with a Renault FT17 Light Tank. After my B.II arrived, I decided the tank will have to wait! :)

My reference books just arrived! Now I can really get down to business! :)

I was wondering which book would be better, but I'm glad I got both. They focus on different aspects. The Aero PhotoGallery has great interior cockpit, engine, and many other great close up detail shots. I'm not sure if these are from perfectly accurate replicas, but for the general color, look and feel, they are invaluable. The WS Datafile is pretty standard WS info but will also be helpful.

I have both books. They are both valuable though the mrozowsky book has modern pics of existing original craft. Off the top of my head I want to say the Polish one was built post war and the other was a us trot Hungarian and if memory serves me correctly it is a prototype .that said I would imagine details like the control panels and a few other things may be slightly different then an early war German birdie so I guess try to go off both combined

Thanks for the info, Scott. I know these had a long life span and were built from pre-war through to well after the war. There are a lot of variations in the cockpit details. I'll probably stick closely enough to one of the WnW versions, adding detail where necessary to enhance things, but not stray too far from the basic layout of the IP and interior.

I really like version C in the kit because of the dark wood and color of the linen. But after looking at the books, I think it is possible to do a different version with similar coloring if I make some custom decals. This might be a good idea to make my model a bit more unique since version C seems to be the most popular choice. I don't want to make exactly the same thing as everyone else, if I can help it. 8)

Question about wood decals in B.II kit

There are extremely fine recessed nail details on the fuselage. Do you think they will disappear after the wood decals are applied, or will they still be visible after setting solution is applied? Should I use a riveting tool to rescribe them? Or forego the decals and paint the plywood with the usual oil paint technique so as not to lose the nails?

I notice that on the finished model on the WnW site that the nails seem to have mostly been covered over. This is a shame because the nails add a lot to the look of the fuselage.

Thanks,
George

George,

It can be expected that the recessed nail details will be less visible after wood decals have been applied. It will also be the case when applying sufficient set and sol, because the texture will be different than when looking at the flat plastic surface. But why don't you try a wash on the decals or tip all the recessed nail details with a fine marker. I suppose that would enhance the visibility and I think it will improve the total impression of the fuselage. Somebody should be the first to try ;)

regards,
Ivo

By the way: I ordered the Windsock B.II publication this evening in preparation of the LVA B.II with numbers LA-31 or LA 39 former german registrations 78/14 and 610/15

Hi George!!!

I can't wait for you to start on this bird!!! I can't wait to put my hands on one of these myself neither!!! :D I like the idea of the decals but in far future when I eventually get one on my workbench I will almost certainly be using oils ;)

Cheerio

Use a hair drier to get them to shrink wrap to the fuselage they will get drawn in to the nail details.
