Title: Roland D. VIb Jasta 59 (WNW 1/32)

Hello! This is my first online build report. I've chosen The Roland D. VIb as I really like the wooden fuselage. The Jasta 59 option with the bright red tail is pretty flashy and I like that. I'll be using Aviattic decals for the lozenge and other bits and pieces to enhance things as I go along.

I've begun with the cockpit. My wood grain technique consists of a base coat of buff lightened with some white followed by oils . Once I'm happy with the grain effect I use a mixture of clear yellow and orange (Tamiya paints) The ammo container and fuel tank are alclad with a wash.

That brings me up to date. I tend to work in spurts based on time available and modeling mojo. My goal is always to have fun and relax so I don't try to push through when I don't feel like it ( I save that for work). I am open to any and all comments and critiques.

Rob

Hi Rob,

Your attitude I like, my main thing is to have fun too.
And if you're having fun, usually comes out with something good. the beginning looks very promising.
Very good work  :D
I will continue to be by your side and track your report

Great to see another Roland (such a beautiful kit) and in Aviattic decals too - lush! (As we say here in Gloucestershire!)

Regards, Richard
Your decals will show up on the wings as well Richard. Wonderful product!

It's been an interesting week out here in the Pacific Northwest. We had a tremendous storm accompanied by high winds and lost power for a day or so. That does cut into the bench time a bit :)
On Saturday I was able to  spend a little time on the Roland. I finished up the cockpit. It's nearly impossible to see but I did spend a lot of time rigging all the control cables. Oh well, at least I know they are in there. The kit gives you an option with the seat cushion. I chose the one without it only because I was having fun painting wood grain.(http://s19.postimg.org/nirsigmoj/DSC_0194.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)
Next up is the engine and fuselage. I decided to paint as much as possible before I closed it up. I know I'm going to have to redo the area where the two halves meet, but I didn't want to be fighting the rudder and aileron control lines that will be installed before I close it up. It may not work out that way...time will tell. I wanted to keep the wood a lighter color so I mixed naples yellow in with raw sienna and a touch of burnt umber. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

That's all for now. As always your comments and/or critiques are welcome.
Thanks for looking,
Rob

Thanks,
While lots of swirls and knots look very cool, I'm not sure they are as realistic in this situation. There's got to be a balance between visual appeal and reality (for me). I have the Windsock datafile on the Roland and in studying the photos of the wood, it seems that the grain is very subtle. That's what I was going for.

As promised, I've been building in spurts:)
I finished the cockpit and installed it between the fuselage halves which were prepainted. Only a slight seam to fill and touch up on top and bottom. Worked out just like I planned for once.
(http://s19.postimg.org/3ohbnrnwz/DSC_0192.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)
I preinstalled the control wires using Uschi thread which is elastic. It will be more difficult to feed thru the turnbuckles and tubing but being elastic, I won't have to deal with sag.

Next step is to paint an overall coat of thinned Taimiya clear yellow followed the various stripes and markings. Thanks for looking!

Rob

Greetings,
The fuselage is definitely looking more colorful-well, as colorful as black and white with a red tail can be :o. I've spent the last few days masking and painting. Other than some minor overspray I think I've got it. Once this has a chance to dry thoroughly, I'll paint the details (fittings, cockpit coaming, etc). I started on the forward port side but quickly realized I needed to be a little more patient.

Thanks to all who have looked in and commented. Your encouraging words are much appreciated!
Progress has been slow and steady. I made a decision not to go crazy with the engine this time. I built it OOB, painted it and picked out details with a brush. I plan on displaying the Roland with the engine shrouds in place and very little would be seen. The engine is installed but the forward cowl is not yet glued.

I've also got the fuselage crosses in place and picked out some of the fittings with grey-green. I will eventually spray a coat of matte or maybe semi gloss to take the shine off.
(http://s19.postimg.org/mocs4kbtf/DSC_0199.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)
I've replaced the kits MGs with ones from Gaspatch. The level of detail is incredible. If you haven't got a set yet, I highly recommend them. They are finished with Alclad gunmetal then drybrushed with steel. I painted some details with Mr. Color Brass. It's a little duller and better represents the tarnish that builds up. The exhaust is nearly done as well. Its painted with a combination of Mr color iron and dark iron with a little bit of pastel rust. I will probably fiddle around with it a little more.

I apologize again for the photo quality. I really am trying to get better-it just doesn't seem to be one of those skills that comes easy to me. I've got quite a bit of time off during the holidays. Other than some bike rides and time with my family, I will be spending a lot of it at the bench. I've got a set of Aviattic decals  for the wings that I can't wait to get to.
Thanks for looking!

Rob

Rob - just found this for the first time! Must have been a sleep again ::)

Very nice work all round particularly on the woodwork and your masking has worked really well. Like Gregory this has always been a 'favourite' (along with several others of course ;)) - I have this in the stash so will keep a keen eye on proceedings,

Looking forwards to your future updates - Tug

Thanks to all who have looked in and taken the time to comment. Your kind words are very much appreciated.
I've spent a little time here and there in the workshop this week. I spent some time getting the machine guns mounted along with the "shell chutes". I also installed the windscreen and exhaust. The front end of the fuselage is pretty much complete except for adding a little wear and tear.

(http://s19.postimg.org/nu69j8v2r/DSC_0202.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

I've also been working on the tail end. I mounted the horizontal stabilizer. The rudder is just setting in place. I still need to fix the small wires in holes I drilled to give it a little more strength. The tail skid needs to be touched up as well.
(http://s19.postimg.org/6ec3hjw43/DSC_0203.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

I've painted the prop and spinner. It should probably be grey-green but I think the red looks better so...
(http://s19.postimg.org/q1ai760cz/DSC_0204.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

Finally, I've completed the 5 color lozenge on the wings. I used the Aviattic set designed for the Roland. Fellas, if you haven't tried their products you are missing out. This is my first time with them. They are a lot tougher than I thought they would be. No tears despite my ham-fisted efforts to get them into place. They conform beautifully and most importantly-they really look good!

This will be my last update before the holidays. I want to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I'll be spending some quality time with family and friends for the next few days. Maybe Santa will bring me a new kit or ???  :)
v/r,
Rob
