Title: Introduction
Post by: slateman on November 10, 2015, 09:23:57 PM
As a new member to this forum I also wanted to give you a quick insight on how I progress with things 'WWI aircraft'. Being focused on Sci-Fi modelling (i.e. Mecha) for more than 10 years the topic of 'WWI aviation' simply had a great appeal to me, since the craftsmanship present in those fighters is closely related to some Steampunk elements. At least that is the reason I see behind it ;-) As a result of that I guess I have a different approach to the topic: More aesthetics-driven and not so much history oriented. Other than that I prefer WWI aircraft over other "Military" kits such as, i.e. WWII Tanks. Currently, I have a WNW Albatros D.V. kit still waiting on my stash (which I am really looking forward to build) and a RODEN Junkers D.I. already in-progress.

I am 40 years old, married and live together with my wife and daugther near Stuttgart, Germany. My professional career as an Industrial Designer started in 2003. Having worked for a number of clients as a freelance and staff designer I now work as a 3D CAD specialist for SolidWorks, CATIA and Siemens NX.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Welocome aboard and have fun!

Don't be afraid of the WnW kit, it is actually way easier to build than the Roden one.

Best regards,
Sasho

Good to have you with us Slateman, I'm sure from building mecha subjects you'll find techiques you use equally adaptable to WWI aviation. I for one am keen to see what you can bring and what we can share with you. Thats the nature of this forum. I hope you enjoy your time with us. ;)

Just one more question: Which periodicals do you think offer the most value for money? I am currently thinking about subscribing to/joining a WW1 community like Cross and Cockade, Over the Front, WWI Aero or Windsock. Which of these can you recommend? Or are there even better publications (maybe more focussed on modelling) to consider? Any advice highly appreciated.

@andonio64: You sure know Industria Mechanika. If not, give them a try. This garage kit label is run by Michael Fichtenmeyer. He has put some of his own designs into resin models (i.e. the Fantastical Fish-Shaped Submersible or the Hornethopter) and does so for concept designs of other artists/designers. You can reach the site here: www.industriamechanika.com

Check out the "Air" and "Figure" kits he has on offer. The figures, i.e. the "Chrononaut" is really nice: https://industriamechanika.com/shop/steampunk/17-the-chrononaut.html

Other than that there have been many special "Steampunk Modeller" issues by the guys from "Sci-Fi and Fantasy Modeller" / Happy Medium Press in the UK. These issues are almost all sold out on their site and hard to fetch on eBay but worth their price. Check out the Sci-Fi Modeller Site here: http://www.scififantasymodeller.co.uk/English/shop.php (Unfortunately there is no search funtion to filter the content).

This site may also be of interest, unfortunately all of the content is in German: http://salon.clockworker.de/

Welcome to the site slateman  :) For the publications you asked about Wind sock datafiles or any of their publications are perfect and same with WW 1 Aero journal . Cross and cockade and Over the Front cover more of the history side of things , but do have very useful info .

Thanks slateman,
I already knew Industria Mechanika (I also purchased some container sets from them) , the kits they have are fantastic.
As per the others I will give a look.

Thanks again

Antonio

PS Did you build any SP model so far?

Thanks all for the hints and tipps regarding the journals. I am now proud subscriber of Windsock (as well as their Datafiles) and Cross and Cockade. The two issues I have ordered from Windsock (Summer/Winter 2015) showed exactly (modellingwise) what I was looking for - hoping that the CCI issues give some historic insight. So, a little bit of both ;-).
I have also checked out WWI Aero (latest two issues) and Over the Front and found that - at least OTF - is very much of academic, historical nature, what I actually like. It's just too expensive to start it all at once. I will give it a try later on. What I find quite impressive is the fact that there's so much good literature/periodicals that publish 4 issues a year for about 30/40+ years already publishing "new" photos and information on the subject with each and every subsequent journal still focussing exclusively on a topic that is so special as WWI and "early" aviation.
