Airfix 1:72 kit. No detailing but good practice for rigging (in this scale) and for painting schemes...

Great looking "Albie" Chris and for Des, I must say the Pheon Lozenge impresses me, better colour presentation then some of the others IMHO. These are all great looking Albatros subjects, I like this new category a lot, very useful in future I think.

All beautiful Albatros' or is that Albatri?

Ken,
She's an absolute beauty; to steal a quote, "Top Drawer". I really admire the shading of the fabric covered components. Is it Pre-shading or applied after the final finish?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lance it is a combination of dry-brushing the mauve and green areas with white added to lighten the shade and also a little use of pastels in similar shades .... Pastel chalks are the cats meow and once you get the hang of them you can do amazing things with them...... but when you spray your final clear coat, just remember that it will alter your shading ..... so you usually must go a little heavier with pastels so it doesn't completely disappear .....

Ken
Ken,
Just so I've got it right................
Looks like you masked on either side of each rib and then shaded with the lightened pastel/chalk to get the lighter hilite on each rib? Timing on this is perfect as this is my next step for the upper wing (lowers are lozenge) on my current Build. :-\ (or is it freehand?)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hello Lance,
No need to mask..... but make sure when dry brushing with paint to remove most of the paint from the brush on an old T-shirt ...... this way you will only accent the highest detail on the ribs. Also use an old brush as dry-brushing will ruin a new one ....

Most of you have seen this before; WNW DV in Jasta 15 (Kurt Monnington) colours. Not a spectacular colour scheme but my favourite Build to date. She got a "Silver" in class at the IPMS Western Canadian Regional in June, great confidence builder for certain however the Gold Winner left her far behind in the dust!

Prze,
Both beautiful models but the Hans Auer bird is one of my favorites since joining in on the Forum. Wonderful detail, clean and crisp, and so obviously the product of an extremely talented Modeller. Thanks for bringing her back, she's an inspiration to do better every time I view her.

Sorry to come in late on this - somehow missed it before. Des I see that the arrow on the fuselage is black - I have seen black on other models too. I comment on this because I made an Airfix model with this scheme more years ago than I wish to count and my source showed this aeroplane with a red arrow (same pattern and position). Can you (or perhaps Bo or anyone else), tell me if it is certain that the arrow was black or red? Or is it a case of having to interpret b and w photographs? (where red can sometimes be mistaken for black). I am genuinely interested - not that I am going to try to repaint my model now, but it would be nice to have the question resolved (if that is possible).
By the by I can only admire with mouth wide open (sorry, no manners), all of these models - simply superb.
-
Hi LM, I am not an expert on Jasta 5 or Hans von Hippel, but it seems this (black arrow) is the prevailing interpretation these days:

These are all great models. Even the early efforts by many of the modelers are stunning. I am big fan of the Paul Baumer one, great job.
Here is my WNW 1/32nd DV. I don't remember who the pilot was it is a Pheon Decal. Wilehlm Leusch I think, but maybe not. I liked the scheme.

And then my Aurora DV. I used the kit decal and hand painted the lozenge. One of my early efforts back in 07. The kit came out in 1977 in Aurora's last re-release with the red blitz. The kit came from my dad's collection.

RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick and LM56:
I have a whole stash of old Aurora Kits that I would love to tackle. Just build them for the fun of it. The fit is amazing. The shapes are a little off and the engines are bad, but when they came out in the 50's, they were the cat's pajamas! We couldn't get enough of them! Every time I open one of those boxes and see that off color plastic, it brings me right back to that time.
Thanks for the kind words and stopping by.
Best
Mark

Hello Mark
It's just great to see what you achieved with the old Aurora Albatros. For all their faults that range represents such an important part of our modelling heritage. I know that some of the moulds were destroyed in an accident but I wonder if the Great War centenary would tempt the current owners of the rest to re-release some?
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Really great Albatrosses Mark. Whatever plane I saw build by you looked terrific. Great modeling. Congratulations!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Mark, great work on the Albys! I remember one of the instructors I had
as a kid in Air Cadets was a modeller of Aurora WWI aeroplanes and I was
in awe of his hand-painted lozenge...as I still am. Amazing job!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks Nigel, Patrick and Ernie:
I know that Monogram got the Camel, DVII, and the SE5, which have seen several re-releases both as Monogram and Revell of Germany. Glencoe got the Albatros, which I think they cobbled up to make their Albatros revisions. They also got the Nie. 28, the Pfalz DIII and the SPAD XIII. They advertised in their directions the release of the DH4 and I think either the Breguet XIIII or the Halberstadt. Not sure on that one. Then there is the European company, I can't think of their name now, that copied the Aurora molds and released some of their kits as well, the Nie. II, Albatros, Camel, DVII, and a DH2 that was some other kit and some others. It would be neat to see these again in 2014. Hopefully some far thinking exec at the companies will see the value in releasing these again. Yes, they are crude by todays standards but, fun to build just as they are. The rumor is that when Aurora sold the molds, they went by train from the New York plant to Monogram in Illinois during which time there was a derailment and some of the molds were ruined beyond repair. I remember in about '77 or so seeing the Monogram releases of the kits wondering why they released them when Aurora had just done so. Aurora re-did some of the molds for their '77 releases for ease of assembly. Then there were the K&B releases. Sadly some of their later releases, which weren't bad, were the ones that were destroyed. Painting the lozenge wasn't so bad. It was just getting the right paints and the tedium of tracing the patterns using carbon paper. Try to find carbon paper now days! :o
Fun stuff.
Best
Mark

Zoinks! What a beautiful collection of Albatros Scouts this thread has produced- so many attractive schemes. Congratulations on some truly masterful builds, everyone! I humbly offer a small contribution from my collection, a WNW kit marked one flown by Lt. Ulrich Neckel. Pheon lozenge decals, Barracuda Intake Manifold w/kit piping, Taurus manifold & plugs, RB belts & wood grain templates, rigged with EZ Line, Bob's Buckles & Gaspatch turnbuckles. For those with interest and time to kill, I've posted a link to my slideshow. It illustrates all of the happy accidents and a few other decisions that might have gotten me court-martialed had this been an endeavor subject to military regulations :o:

Built a LONG time ago, 1/72 Pegasus DVa converted to DV.
Lozenge is Aeromaster, and the skull decal is Americal.
Old interpretation of Monnington's DV. Looking at the picture today, it seems obvious that the upper wing was green / mauve.

Croas,
I did my Wingnut Wings D.V in Monnington's scheme several years back. Their plans showed the upper as green/mauve as you say with the lower and horizontal tail planes and elevator in lozenge. Your interpretation looks pretty fine though, nice little model. 8)

Thought I'd post a few photos of my latest DVa here to keep this topic alive. This Wingnut Wings DVa was built in tribute to our founding Owner, Des Delatorre. It was finished with numerous after-market additions including Pheon Decals and Aviattic Lozenge. I hand carved the prop from Alaskan cedar and Pear veneers.
The model represents a Jasta 17 machine flown by the Unit's Staffelfuhrer, Hptm. R. Freiherr von Esebeck at Douilly France in March of 1918.

1/72 scale Eduard Albatros D.V. I followed the wingnuts instructions for painting and marking so no upper wing chevron. Overall this is a good kit although I do not understand how Eduard forgot the radiator pipes. I used fuse wire for that. Had to hand paint the tail red outline as I had fits with the decals. Rigging with .006 Nitinol black oxide wire. Added some detail to the engine using an unbuilt Roden kit as a guide. Some observations from this build were:
1. This was the first reasonable model I have completed in almost 46 years. This forum has been invaluable and I thank all who have answered my questions.
2. My goal is to improve my skills and this forum is the best place to do just that.
3. Do not attempt any critical steps if you are tired from work. I can't tell you how many times I screwed something up or lost a part because I was not at my best. Also failure is easier to take when you are well rested.
4. There is some amazing talent here. Keep posting everyone.

My third and final for the Dave Wilson Group Build. It was an honor.
Build log here: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=14662.0
This really is pretty much out-of-box. I changed the cockpit combing, wire gun barrels, rescribed the rudder, E-Z line rigging and aftermarket decals.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/5a61ae7d-4643-4733-b7aa-4be394518284.jpg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/23369dca-5e69-4fb6-a612-7f1549985561/5a61ae7d-4643-4733-b7aa-4be394518284.jpg)
Aurora did the best they could with what they had at the time. Although I didn't think of it during this build, I bet if you put this plastic up against an enlarged Profile Publication plan view it will match perfectly. A wildly distracting paint scheme plus certain lenses and certain angles completely eliminate the visual issues with the third trimester fuselage.

It's been a pleasure to be able to participate in this homage to someone who contributed so much to this forum.

Magnificent Albatros, Allan. I still can't get my head around the fact that it's the Aurora kit. You've delivered a stellar replica with this one!

If my results with this kit back in the sixties had been anything like this, I'd have a totally different outlook. Definitely a silk purse out of a sow's ear!
