My new project will be a tribute to the great Polish general - Władysław Anders. He became famous in the years 1942-1945, when he led out of the Soviet Union a Polish army made of the men, who were enslaved and sent into the Red Communist Empire after Soviets attacked Poland on Sept. 17th 1939 aiding Hitler to break Polish resistance in the first days of WW2. The army was in fact a band of famished and sick people fleeing the Soviet "paradise" under the Polish-Soviet treaty. Russia was forced to allow it under the threat of stopping the Allied help during the hard time they had then, when attacked by their former ally - Germany.
It took some time before those people, lucky to escape the overwhelming Russian opression, were fed, healed and made able to form the real army. But when they did, they and their commander - Anders, won the eternal fame as the force, which finally broke the German fortification lines in Italy and capturing in May 1944 the cloister at Monte Cassino and some neighbouring hills opened the way to Rome for the Allies.
But before Anders became a general he served as a sub-colonel and observer on the front of war between Poland and Russia in 1919-1920, when new-born Poland had to fight for the borders both in the west and in the east. Anders is known to fly in the east front at least one mission in the observer cockpit, together with Sgt. Kazimierz Burzyński in the pilot cockpit, of the single DFW C.V among several LVG C.Vs forming 1 Squadron of Great Poland (Eskadra Wielkopolska).

In this lucky instance there are more photos of this particular aircraft, like this one
(https://i.imgur.com/dqWaqNW.jpg)
I am going to build and slightly modify the quite well known WNW kit
(https://i.imgur.com/7LTdBhS.jpg)
and surely you know where to find good inbox shots - undoubtedly better than any ones I could possibly take.
The markings for this particular airframe were ordered at Melius Manu - a small but very reliable and growing Polish company who produce custom ordered decals and masks for different types of modelling. After a busy exchange of emails, opinions and photos they came out with such a marvelous decal sheet
(https://i.imgur.com/eWxLlAC.jpg)
I am also using HGW textile belts (there is a dedicated set for DFW C.V, though the contents do not differ at all from the ones I have recently used for my HB W.12) and PE details for spoked wheels from Part set dedicated for Roden Albatros D.III.
The work on this model has been on for almost two weeks now. After cutting the parts from the sprues, removing some push-pin marks and flash, airbrushing, brushing tiny details, decalling and some wash the interior bits are almost ready for the assembly. The only added bits are: copper wire aerial (not yet trimmed and attached to the tube), fuel selector switch (just visible on the top-left of the instrument panel) and there are still some control lines to be attached to the stick and the bar as well as the MG trigger line.

Man, as we say in the South, you sure don't let any grass grow under your feet between builds, Prze! And it's not like you're cranking them out assembly line style with no attention to detail. Please tell the rest of us what sort of vitamins you are taking??
You remain my hero and I am looking forward to following this build.
Cheers from NYC,
Michael

As everyone has said, another great start, Prze! I always enjoy your builds very much!
"...as we say in the South.." - Michael, look at a map dude. Since when is NY south of the Mason Dixon?

So glad to see you starting this one, Przemo! Stellar work on the interior, as usual! Once I finish up the W.12, I'll get started on mine.
Cheers,

Thank you, everybody. Your welcome to my new build is both inspiring and demanding. I will do my best to build it as well as I can.
Two hours or so this evening allowed me to complete the cockpit. All those packed control lines scared me a little but then it proved to be quite easy task. Including the MG trigger release cable - I led it as per a photo from WD, wher it sinks in a hole just under the clock on the instrument panel.

Przemek,
All projects which deals with polish markings always drawing my attention, so will keep looking at your progress. I can assume that you have a lot of ideas for projects going on as it looks like you can set up some kind of production line for ww1 aircrafts:)
Interior looks perfect!

Prz,
I really like your rendition of what appears to be a specific sort of plywood used in the interior sections.
Do you have references that you can share with us? It's neat to see something that doesn't look generic.
Cheers from NYC,

(Does that clear it up for you, George?)

Thank you, gentlemen!
Return greetings to "round the corner" Jorg ;)
Michael, I have to disappoint you. My painting to represent the wood is my pure personal invention. No pattern used. BTW, I am still not fully satisfied with it. I am using a 000 brush but it still yields too thick lines...

this looks fantastic so far przemol, cant wait to see you give it the prez treatment.

Lovely work so far mate.

Prz,
I have found that it's not so much the size of the brush as the ability of the brush to maintain a very fine point and the thinning of the paint. I have watched figure painters of the highest rank paint eyeballs using a 0 brush, but it was a Windsor/Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brush and the paint was perfectly thinned. Also, I briefly studied icon painting with an amazing Russian artist and she said she "always knew exactly where the tip of her brush was in regards to the surface being painted". After further explanation and demonstration, her point became clear.....that it was a matter of how much pressure one puts on the brush, the more pressure causing more fluid to be released. Also, that the least amount of pressure must be applied when first touching the surface, as that is when the most amount of fluid is still held in the bristles. It's all obvious but having an artist demonstrate it makes it that much clearer.
An interesting side note; I attended the World Expo in 2005. This is the tri-annual gathering of the world's finest figure painters. The year I attended it was the Russian women icon painters who walked away with most of the gold, and rightly so as their technical painting ability was unmatched. And they all freely admitted that they had no real interest in figure painting, but, knew that they could sell the prize winning figures to collectors for a pretty penny...er, ah ruble. And did they!!!
Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Thanks a lot for your kind words, Tug, Albatros, Dave and Rick.
Michael, thank you very much for your comments on brushes and paint. It is amazing, but precisely today in the morning I had an interesting email exchange with one guy from Melius Manu (those decal guys). He is painting figures... and he just mentioned the same and also recommended me Winsor Newton Sable brushes! He also suggested thinning acrylic paints with a drop of alcohol to reduce the surface tension. Anyway, now I know what I have to do :-)
-
Well, great minds think alike regardless of which hemisphere they are thinking in.
Two thoughts: Windsor Newton sable brushes are really hard to find at the moment because there is apparently a shortage of sable. But they are worth looking for if you can find them. They are an expensive initial investment but, if well cared for, they will last a long time and prove their worth. Secondly, there are a lot of fluids out there made especially to extend the working/open time for acrylic paints. (May I suggest visiting and art store.) One of the best is retarder. Just don't drink it....as George obviously does. :o
I look forward to continuing following this build.

That's politically incorrect, Michael. We refer to it as mentally challenged. :-\

Dear George, I certainly am not saying that you are mentally retarded. I agree with you saying such a thing would be politically incorrect and, frankly, just plain mean.
What I was saying, however, is that it seems you have been drinking retarder. How else can one explain your glacial building speed.......and other fascinating behavioral peculiarities of yours.

Yes, Michael, I am not surprised, that great minds do coincide in theiropinions, I was only stricken by the fact, that the opinions came almost simultaneously.
As for the brushes, I managed to find the WN sable brushes in one web-shop here, in Poland. Two are apparently on their way to my place now.
And I do not drink acrylic paint retarders. I have one, and I use it as per instructions :D
And finally - some steps taken in the build.
First, my DFW C.V has an unusual exhaust. And none of five options included within the sprues of WNW kit was correct for this purpose. But I discovered, that I can build one using fragments of two kit parts. So here it is - the final product alongside the spurious bits.
I have also closed the fuselage and added the turtledeck around pilot's cockpit, the chin panel and the bottom panel. Great fit of WNW parts does not mean, however, for me at least, that no filling and sanding was necessary. On the contrary, I had to use some CA glue to make the seam lines disappear - the split of the WNW kit fuselage into elements does not necessarily correspond to panel lines on the real bird.
I have also started preparing the engine bits - here dry-fitting without side cowlings

and with them and the cabane struts

Przemek I really like your newest modelling subject and your work itself. Great job so far and I expect more to come;)
-
Thank you, guys.
I have started real work on the engine. Like with W.12, I have used kit cylinder blocks without crude imitation of valve push rods and made them of tin wire. I have also prepared the rails for the spark plug wires - surprisingly neglected by WNW in their kits - they are quite evident in the photos, aren't they?

A few steps forward...
Engine basically assembled, now only some dirt and done. I have added the electric wires, magnetos attaching bands (from black painted 1mm Aizu masking tape), two pieces of fuel lines to the carburetters and the throttle linkage (its connection to the cockpit will be added when engine is finally mounted.

Very nice! A wonderful example of the fresh from the factory look! I only wish I could do that as I seem to want to make everything look grimy and used - I wonder what that says about my mental state! :D

Lovely Prze,
Although it brings back painful memories of the one I dropped whist making final adjustments to the rigging... :P

Thank you, everybody.
One point to Jorg and FarEast - the engine will not remain factory fresh - it will get some dirt soon ;)
Guy, was your DFW damaged beyond repair? If so, I feel very sorry... But maybe you could give it a chance?

Unfortunately no Prze,
It shattered beyond repair.. Put me off modelling for ages!
Guy

Sorry to hear this. :-[ I know, it is hard to be sure what one would do in such a case, but I daresay I would go and buy the second kit and redo it. I wish you do such a move!

Hello ladies and gentlemen,
Absolutly stunting Prze !!! I love it !!
Best regards.

-
Thank you very much, Martin and Alain!
After one week off to an abroad business trip I am finally back home at back to my modelling desk.
I have dirtied the engine
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/DFW%20CV/dfw-c5-69_zpsncaahmr0.jpg)
and put some colours to the plastic (actually, one colour for now - the fuselage green - I have chosen German RLM 80 dark greyish green, which seems to me a possible choice, made by those who prepared this aircraft using the stuff captured from Germans in early 1919 in Ławica Flying Station in Poznań)
BTW, the airframe of my example seems to be a combination of DFW parts coming from different manufacturers - engine hatch covers seem to indicate Aviatik but there are some details characteristic for DFW production like the manufacturer plate at the port side of front fuselage and interplane strut markings at the lower ends - and no Aviatik logo visible on them
The flying and control surfaces will be CDL. I have traced the outlines of the kit parts on the background of Aviattic CDL decals.
And finally, I have also drilled all the holes for the rigging.
A propos rigging, it is weird for me, but having studied photos of DFW C.Vs, especially of the one I am modelling, I came to conclusion that each interwing rigging line has turnbuckles at its both ends! I have always supposed, that it was practically enough to have one of them per each line. Can anybody confirm my observations?
-
Lovely work weathering the engine Przemol and the green you used for the fuselage looks very good.

I think I see the same thing. This photo from the WNWs website shows what appears to be turnbuckles at both ends. Who know why they would need two, but that's what it looks like in the photo.

See exactly the same, however some do have a double turnbuckle overs have 1 with an eyelet!! In fact there are some VERY clear images of it:
(http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/James_Machin/Untitled-1_zpsep8u67tu.jpg) (http://s12.photobucket.com/user/James_Machin/media/Untitled-1_zpsep8u67tu.jpg.html)

You may need to do what I did for the DH.2s rigging and make a wing plan of where two turnbuckles are used and where only one.
Also there are some very clear images here:
http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/productdetail?productid=3113&cat=1

It's very hard to fathom why they would use two turnbuckles on each line, doesn't make sense ???

Thank you, everybody, especially for your opinions on the double turnbuckles. I will have indeed to verify the photos and decide which cables were so. However, for a moment my impression is, that all the lines, except for the u/c bracing, have two turnbuckles.
And tonight I managed to install the engine, connect its carbs by the throttle linkage, add the oil-breath pipe, the curved panel under the Spandau and build the cabane. The latter required some sanding in the upper part, because the connection to the upper wing centrepiece was far too tight - now the upper wing sits gently on it. The Spandau is put only provisionally to check the fit.

Finally I have some new results in this project. After some busy evenings with shading, painting and decalling I have the fuselage and the wings in colours. There are still some touches to be done, a wash, some weathering but it is now basically as it will be. Also some work on details like the Parabellum was done. The wheels which are just provisionally put on the axle are the great products from Scale Spokes.
More to come soon, there is a plan to finish it before Christmas. :)

Oh, man, Przemo! She's GORGEOUS! Can't wait to see her with the wings on. My goal is to have mine finished by the New Year and you've got me truly inspired.
Cheers,
Bud

Incredible work, Przemo! I don't have this kit in my stash but you are definitely making me consider it!

Wonderful work as usual, Przemo. Very nice job of the Parabellum. Is it the kit part?
I am looking forward to the next updates. Well done, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I like it, accurate and neat paint. Bravo Prze. :)
Best regards.
Alain.

Beautiful paintwork. The "ghost" image of the insignia on the underside of the wing had me perplexed for a moment. I had to have another sip of coffee and think about it before my brain understood what it was seeing. Good job!!!

Rob

Well done Przemek!!!
-
Thank you for your kind words.
Ernie, Parabelum is a kit part.
And a few further steps forward, the fuselage is now ready to accept the wings. Besides the kit parts I have added an altimeter hanging between front cabane, a rear-view mirror, radiator shutter control cables, tail control cables and also attached the turnbuckles at the cabane top for inner bay landing cables. One more bit - the windscreen is to be added before the wings (oh, at least before the top wing).

For several months, I have no time to be here.
I am glad that I managed to find your topic.
As usual, what you are showing, is at a high level, very nice to watch your progress.
It is nice to also see another model with white and red checkers.
Adam.

SSHHhhhwweeeet.

"ready to accept the wings"...heck...that thing is ready to get into and fly away!
Super nice job!
Dan

Oh yes!! :D
Very good work, congratulation.
-
Thank you, everybody for your overly kind comments. Yet, I am glad, that you like my DFW :D
Just a brief verbal report - the lower wings are already attached, today the fun with struts will begin. And some final work on the propeller, too. Photos will follow soon.
-
Having included the see-through of the wings' checkers is a very nice idea. I like it a lot.

Thanks, Stefan. I need some positive comments on this, as I am not fully convinced with what I painted.
Well, two busy and straining evenings led to the wing cellule being ready! Yesterday I attached the lower wings and external struts. Today I added all the remaining turnbuckles - after viewing the photos of DFWs, I decided to have all the rigging lines with two turnbuckles each, except for the drag wires, from the nose to rear inner strut tops, which will have one per line, those at the fuselage mounting points. So there were 24+20+2 turnbuckles (four at the cabane tops were already there) and 2 eyelets left for today. All of them were pull-out-tested to avoid bad surprises later. I have also attached the windscreen.
Also some work on the propeller was done, but it is not complete yet - manufacturers decals and the spinner are still to be added.

So if the glue holds well, tomorrow the real fun will start at last - rigging!!! 8)
PS. The mug seen in the photos is the means to align the wings in plan - they were slightly askew. I hope the glue at the struts ends heals the problem. If not, there is still a chance to correct it by appropriate sequence of rigging. I will see for it tomorrow.
-
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. ;D
Adam.
-
Looking awesome as always! With your skills I am sure you will work out the alignment issues :)
RAGIII
-
Wow! This is shaping up magnificently, Przemo! Rigging will most likely pull the wings into alignment.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks, Adam, Rick and Bud.
In the matter of fact, after the glue set, the struts were nicely holding the upper wing in the perfect alignment! So I could go on with rigging.
The inner bays and stagger lines almost completed:

And here they are ready and it is already started with outer bays

The unusual exhaust stack and the propeller are on, too. The last bits after the rigging is done will be the observer's Parabellum and aerial with its weight under the fuselage. Tommorow!

She is looking spectacular Przemol, the rigging is superb.

Man, she's gorgeous, Przemo! Looks like your Christmas deadline will be met. I'm out in the garage right now putting paint on the fuselage and wings, so I might make my deadline, as well.
Cheers,
Bud
