I have been itching to get started on this since i got it, so now that i have completed my fokker it's time to make a start.
i think i read somewhere that none of these planes were ever shot down, so my plan is to have it slightly worn and weathered.
i don't think i have the skill to do the green/mauve camouflage scheme by brush so i think i am gonna do the one with the two tone green finish.
so far i have got round to cleaning a few bits up and i hope to get some paint on over the weekend.
hany help and advice/guidence anyone cares to offer will be much appreciated as i expect i will need quite a bit :)
my first question is would these planes have been spray painted or brush?

thanks for your time

Not perfect but still my favourite WnW model. :)
-
i decided to start with the pilots seat, while waiting for the oil paint to dry on the plywood panels. i heard a lot about the tight fit of parts on wnw kits and am now seeing it first hand with just about what seems like every part needing sanding down to fit.

not had a lot of time for the j1 lately, just a few bits and bobs done.
got both instrument panels finished and the prop.
also got the gunners seat made up and painted but got a bit carried away with the weathering and over done it , but i think i will just put that down to the clumsey gunner ;)

Excellent work on your interior section my friend. Outstanding wood work on her prop too, very well done.

Michael,
Very nice interior work and I think your Gunner's seat is great. Consider the Gunner probably moved around a lot (both looking and shooting) and I am a fan of heavy weathering also. Looking forward to following this one along.
Cheers,
Lance

Good stuff, Michael. The woodwork looks good and the prop' is excellent.

a bit of progress
i managed to find a couple of parts with the right corrugations on sprue b that are not needed (i hope) to fix the mistake on the wing.
the only trouble is there was only enough corrugations to fix the upper surface on the wings so i just used some plain plastic to fill in the underside.i think it looks alright just about.
i also got the two halves of the plane together and painted, i just need to let the paint dry good and then rub it down to get a nice even finish and get some brush marks out.

Michael, your solution to the wing gap looks more than 'alright'. It looks flawless.
Cheers,
Bud

Ought to look great when finished.

first off merry christmas and a happy new year to everyone :)
it's a long while since i updated my build, my wife fell a few week ago and managed to shatter the radial on her elbow break her arm and dislocate her elbow :( all in one small slip. she is well on the mend now, but has been told by the docs that she will not get 100% use of her elbow movement back.how life can be changed in the blink of an eye.
so not much time for the junkers with all the ironing and cooking etc....
a few pics of progress to date. the engine and wings are dry fitted.
hopefully i can get cracking now life is slowly returning to normal.
thanks for looking and take care all

I've had zero interest in building a Junkers J.1 but after seeing closeups of your weathering effect on the wings, all of a sudden I can see how I'd like to build one now too. That corrugated texture is an excellent canvas for weathering, and yours is superb.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Michael,
Sorry to hear of your Wife's accident, hopefully the permanent affects will be minimum. Like Chris I really like the weathered effect you have achieved, particularly on the corrugated surfaces. Very nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Michael, your weathering is perfect. She looks like the real thing.
Cheers,
Bud

Man, I like that color scheme, this is one of the few WNW kits I didn't think I wanted... now I think I want it :D
Nice work!

Nice work!
That's exactly what I was thinking, there's this cracking build and another excellent build over at LSP that's really whetted my appetite for one of these models.
-
Nice work. Sorry to hear about your wife's mishap that turned into a life changing event. Makes a bad paint or decal job seem insignificant.

thanks for all the positive comments and support guys!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND YOUR FAMILIES :)

Michael,
Sorry to hear of your Wifes fall and hope she'll have a quick recovery my friend. Sounds like she's in good hand too.

Happy New Year to You and Yours

got a bit more done on the junkers.
i was not looking forward too much to getting all the struts on and the top wing fitted but it all went together without much fuss.
you can see why they called it the flying tank!

Wow! That is one beefy aircraft! She looks wonderful Michael. ;D The weathering and subdued finish really give the impression of painted metal. The aircraft looks very heavy! Well done! This gets me excited to build mine from the stash before too many years go by. :)
Regards,
Bob

Haven't visited this thread in a while, so apologies Michael and belated best wishes to your wife!
Bob's got it right - WOW!!!. Those wings are superb, an excellent weathering technique - how did you go about it? I know I always ask everyone but I find everyone has some little unique 'twist' that produces awesome results ;)
Andrew
-
cheers Andrew,
with the wings i painted them then gave them a rub down with a sanding stick so that some of the grey plastic showed through.
then a good wash with burnt umber oil paint which collected round the rivet and corrugations on the parts.
i quite like the way it's turned out. but thats more down to luck and the great detail on the kit than any skill on my part
cheers
michael

Thats a nice big robust machine!! Junkers just makes tough planes.
Steve

Very impressive finish!

Michael,
Outstanding finishing my friend. Very impressive light weathering. Looking forward to seeing what's next.

PS: I hope your wife is on the mend and doing well.

Hello Michael:
I am just now getting to this thread. Your build is coming along quite nicely with outstanding results.
I hope your wife is on the mend and that yours have a great 2013.

Finally i have got the junkers completed
many thanks to all the guys who have helped and encouraged me during the build.
for my first wnw kit i am pretty pleased at how it turned out. i learned a few things and made lots of mistakes,
but above all i got a great deal of pleasure out of the kit, which is the main thing.
i will try and get some better pictures when we get some decent weather,or should that be if?

Nice work. She's a big ugly bird!! Junkers seemed to get ugly down to a fine art.
Steve
-
Very nice, it is ugly but cool.
-
You've done a brilliant job on this one, Michael, as you do on all of your models. Your weathering is perfect, absolutely brilliant. I'm not so sure I would call this bus ugly. Brutish, maybe. Beastly, perhaps, but with the huge top wing, short span lower wing, tapered fuselage and no rigging, there's something elegant about her. This is one of 4 WNW kits I have in my stash and I look forward to eventually building her.
Cheers,
Bud
-
The weathering makes it, Michael. Beautiful bird. :)
Lindsay
-
What a beastie!! I do like Junker aircraft and you've banged out a beauty Michael.
The weathering is fantastic, well done!!
Andrew
-
Michael,
As others have already commented, this "Beast" is not one I had any real interest in building, until I saw this. Great weathering, same on details and overall finish. Nicely done, and I suspect there may be a J1 in my future.
Cheers,
Lance
-
cheers for the kind words guys - thats my baby your calling ugly :)
for anyone thinking of building this kit i can't recommend it highly enough. but it is quite a size when the top wings get attatched!

Oops sorry, I meant she has a great personality.
Seriously, lovely build. made me order one.
-
Nice build Michael, and I like the weathering. This is the ideal kit to get into WNW s product line, and re-learn WWI.
-
Looking Good Micheal:
As others have stated, the weathering is really top notch, you did an outstanding job all around. It is a "brutish" beast. One that is in the stash.........someday.......

Wow, my jaw is on the ground and I'm drooling an ocean. That is a beautiful job! Thank you so much for sharing your build.
-
Michael,
Congratulations my friend on completing your J.I my friend. Your excellent skill and craftsmanship have made the big brute look wonderful. Well Done.

Gregory Jouette
