Title: 1:32 spoked wheels
Post by: Des on July 20, 2012, 07:34:57 AM
I was sent an email with the following photo from Steven, he has asked me to ask the members if they would like him to write an article on how to build 1:32 scale spoked wheels, he will do a tutorial with a description and photos. I know I will certainly be interested, spoked wheels add a touch of "class" to a WW1 model.

Des.

I have removed the image due to copyright restrictions.

Yes please! Spoked wheels give WW1 models a certain elegance so I would love to see how they can be done. The more photos the better.

Tutorials like this and for other techniques would be very welcome

Yes, this is very important!  I believe that the techniques in 1/72 and 1/48 using PEs would not work well for 1/32. 8)

Not that I could do it, but it would be great seeing the technique.

Looking forward to seeing this. Not quite sure why, I have been procrastinating for long enough about respoking my 1/1 scale WW1 car wire wheels, so why I should want to make small aeroplane ones as well I am not quite sure... must be mad.

Hi Folks, sorry it's taken so long but I'm now in the forum.  I'm very grateful for all the interest in the SPOKED WHEELS TUTORIAL.  I have now started to prepare the tutorial.  Should be ready for publication in 3 x weeks.  I will release to Des some photos asap, when they come back from the photographer, maybe by Wed next week.  I've spent 4 x years searching for a SW solution, I'm happy to share what I think is a good hybrid solution.  If you like the first tutorial, I'll also work-up the second SW design.  SW are not hard to make, it's all technique driven but time consuming.  I think my WW1 aeroplanes are worth the time and SW generate a great response.
Regards
Steven Robson

p.s. included this cropped photo
p.p.s can confirm CD of photos, my models, lots of spoked wheels images posted by photographer today and comming to the forum.

Thank you for your interest.

Hi Des, I had patiently waiting for an update of the site, but until today, the top of the Hits and Tips is "How to drill 0.4mm and 0.5mm brass tubing to a larger bore size, not the Spoked Wheels.   :-\

Hi Frank

Thats an interesting question you ask. The tutorial appears to have vanished. The link that Des provided goes nowhere and even I can't access it, with my Forum owner's wizard hat on.

I will make inquiries and see where it may have vanished to.

Steven Robson who produced the wheels has not been active on the Forum since September last year.

Hi Frank

I contacted Steven who is looking for his copy of the tutorial to re-upload. If he can't find his I have Des' old hard drive archive files here and have started searching for the tutorial.

Steven says he's happy for us to upload it again if I find it ( he owns the copyright to the article) so bear with me as I trawl through the year 2012 and the gems in the vault. It was quite a year.

Stay tuned

Thank you very much Dave! But please don't stress yourself!
I wondered if something like that that is possible in 1/48, but I have also PE spokes from Eduard and Part as fallback.

Richard, I have them in my stash (lovely!), but that are Palmer Brit ones and too big for a Austro-Hungarian project idea.
I think I will use PE, even the original wheels do not have many spokes (less then the Palmer with three rows).

Thanks!

I'd like to see the tutorial.  There is a review on Hyperscale from 2013 by James Fahey on Steve's wheels.  It states the rims are cast from silver, so this would be difficult to recreate without the proper equipment.  I am curious how the spokes are attached to the hubs.  Looks realistic.  Also looks like the spoke pattern is three cross and two cross - also realistic.

The good news is that we have found a copy of Steven Robson's spoked wheel tutorial from 2012. It was stored in the hard drive files of Des Delatorre's which I inherited after his passing.

I have been in contact with Steven who has given his permission to upload the article again ( he owns the copyright) so stay tuned for the return of the spoked wheel tutorial!

Hi Mike

Not sure about a second tutorial, the one I uploaded again is the only one found so far.

It was actually in 30 or so parts which I stitched together for what you see on the Forum now.

If I find a second tutorial I will upload that too.

There are a number of good tutorials on making wire spoked wheels on the papermodels.com web site.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/416736-post10.html

I have looked elsewhere on the web for these articles to no avail and you have to be a member ( I am ) at papermodels.com to download them.

The articles by Spoked wheels by Eric Goedkoop and Spoked wheels by Alan G.  are the better two of the four but the other two are helpful as well.

I have the pdf's if anyone is interested.

Good day,

I stumbled across another variation of making spoked wheels for models. Same basic principle as they all are however this person made a very nice jig to assist in his work:

In the bigger scales there are also 3D printed tools possible.

Here is a manufacturer (nice 3D on the homepage) ...
https://unobtainium.digital/

... with very nice tooling in 1/12 for a Alfa Romeo car:
https://unobtainium.digital/alfa-wheels.html

The result is fantastic!
