I was sent an email with the following photo from Steven, he has asked me to ask the members if they would like him to write an article on how to build 1:32 scale spoked wheels, he will do a tutorial with a description and photos. I know I will certainly be interested, spoked wheels add a touch of "class" to a WW1 model.
Des.
I have removed the image due to copyright restrictions.

Yes please!
-
Although not my scale, I would love to see that tutorial.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Yes I am interested, good idea
-
Yes please! Spoked wheels give WW1 models a certain elegance so I would love to see how they can be done. The more photos the better.
Tutorials like this and for other techniques would be very welcome

I'd like to read that tutorial also to see if creating spoked wheels could fall within my skillset.
Cheers,

Absolutely yes! Please, do!
I always wanted to give it a try, but was too scared to actually do, now a tutorial coud be exactly what it takes!

Yes, please!!! :)
-
Yes, this is very important! I believe that the techniques in 1/72 and 1/48 using PEs would not work well for 1/32. 8)
-
Yes, by all means! Bring it on...
Not that I could do it, but it would be great seeing the technique.

Save one for me too, please!

-
Albeit late, beautiful Pfalz, really impressive wheels.........so YES, me too!

Thanks guys for your overwhelming support for a spoked wheel tutorial. I have been in contact with Steven and he is willing to do the article for us, it may take a few weeks but he will get it to us eventually.

Looking forward to seeing this. Not quite sure why, I have been procrastinating for long enough about respoking my 1/1 scale WW1 car wire wheels, so why I should want to make small aeroplane ones as well I am not quite sure... must be mad.
-
Yes Please, this seems to be a good idea.
Cheers

Hi Folks, sorry it's taken so long but I'm now in the forum. I'm very grateful for all the interest in the SPOKED WHEELS TUTORIAL. I have now started to prepare the tutorial. Should be ready for publication in 3 x weeks. I will release to Des some photos asap, when they come back from the photographer, maybe by Wed next week. I've spent 4 x years searching for a SW solution, I'm happy to share what I think is a good hybrid solution. If you like the first tutorial, I'll also work-up the second SW design. SW are not hard to make, it's all technique driven but time consuming. I think my WW1 aeroplanes are worth the time and SW generate a great response.
Regards
Steven Robson
p.s. included this cropped photo
p.p.s can confirm CD of photos, my models, lots of spoked wheels images posted by photographer today and comming to the forum.
-
Looking forward to your presentation! However, could
you explain to this OF (Old Fart) what you mean by SW? :)
Jim
-
That SW picture is a great appetizer... :)
-
Photo looks great; really looking forward to the "How To" on this! 8)

Here is another photo of the spoked wheels sent to me by Steven, the wheels certaily look great and I look forward to seeing the tutorial and having a go at making them.
Des.

A bit late, but yes, I'd really like to see this done. What a beauty of an Albie..
-
Thank you mike in calif. I'll get a great buzz when you start posting your own planes with spoked wheels.
Steven
-
Go for it! Really would be a great asset.
Look forward to reading it.
Dave
-
Thanks Dave
Please find attached another photo of the Spoked Wheels. Sorry about the quality of the image, the wheel is a bit clumsy (this is an early version) but it gives the general idea.
Thank you for your interest.

The Spoked Wheels Tutorial is now finished and available.

I can not find it... :-\

The spoked wheel tutorial is in the Hints and Tips section, it is pinned so is at the top of the list.

Hi Des, I had patiently waiting for an update of the site, but until today, the top of the Hits and Tips is "How to drill 0.4mm and 0.5mm brass tubing to a larger bore size, not the Spoked Wheels. :-\
Sorry if I'm being annoying...

The tutorial is posted here (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=730.0), on this forum, and not on the website.

Hi Filipe,
Here is the link to the tutorial.

Thanks guys! ;)

This is a old, but interesting topic.
Does anybody know, where the tutorial is located now? I have no access to Des link :(
Thanks,
Frank
-
Hi Frank
Thats an interesting question you ask. The tutorial appears to have vanished. The link that Des provided goes nowhere and even I can't access it, with my Forum owner's wizard hat on.
I will make inquiries and see where it may have vanished to.
Steven Robson who produced the wheels has not been active on the Forum since September last year.

Thank you David!
May be he made a business from it so do not want to share his know how anymore.
I think there are more posts about this topic in the construction threads, let's see.

Hi Frank
I contacted Steven who is looking for his copy of the tutorial to re-upload. If he can't find his I have Des' old hard drive archive files here and have started searching for the tutorial.
Steven says he's happy for us to upload it again if I find it ( he owns the copyright to the article) so bear with me as I trawl through the year 2012 and the gems in the vault. It was quite a year.
Stay tuned
cheers

Thank you very much Dave! But please don't stress yourself!
I wondered if something like that that is possible in 1/48, but I have also PE spokes from Eduard and Part as fallback.

Frank

Gaspatch make some lovely 3D printed wire wheels
Richard
-
Richard, I have them in my stash (lovely!), but that are Palmer Brit ones and too big for a Austro-Hungarian project idea.
I think I will use PE, even the original wheels do not have many spokes (less then the Palmer with three rows).
Thanks!
Frank

I'd like to see the tutorial. There is a review on Hyperscale from 2013 by James Fahey on Steve's wheels. It states the rims are cast from silver, so this would be difficult to recreate without the proper equipment. I am curious how the spokes are attached to the hubs. Looks realistic. Also looks like the spoke pattern is three cross and two cross - also realistic.
-
The good news is that we have found a copy of Steven Robson's spoked wheel tutorial from 2012. It was stored in the hard drive files of Des Delatorre's which I inherited after his passing.
I have been in contact with Steven who has given his permission to upload the article again ( he owns the copyright) so stay tuned for the return of the spoked wheel tutorial!
cheers

Wow, this is great stuff Dave.
Thank you and Stephen for making this available again for us.
Willem

Thanks Dave and Stephen for making this tutorial available again.
Stephen mentions in the tutorial a follow up second tutorial.
Was this ever made and available?
Mike
-
Hi Mike
Not sure about a second tutorial, the one I uploaded again is the only one found so far.
It was actually in 30 or so parts which I stitched together for what you see on the Forum now.
If I find a second tutorial I will upload that too.
cheers

Due to all the great information here I was able to do my first own spoked wheels, see here:

There are a number of good tutorials on making wire spoked wheels on the papermodels.com web site.
http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/416736-post10.html
I have looked elsewhere on the web for these articles to no avail and you have to be a member ( I am ) at papermodels.com to download them.
The articles by Spoked wheels by Eric Goedkoop and Spoked wheels by Alan G. are the better two of the four but the other two are helpful as well.
I have the pdf's if anyone is interested.
cheers, Graham
-
Hi Graham
I would be interested in the pdf`s I joined the papermodelers forum but couldn't find or download the files.

Good afternoon Andrew,
I have placed all four pdf files in a dropbox folder that you should be able to access:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9ymryr19ewq0anv/AADyLl-5APWJZ2m_VNmR-GSga?dl=0
let me know if you can not access and I will email them

Thanks Graham
The pdf's landed well at my end.

I suppose Steven is Steven Robson? In that case I can HIGHLY recommend anything this gentleman has to offer, his wheels (I have a set of Dr.1 wheels) are simply stunning!
-
Good day,
I stumbled across another variation of making spoked wheels for models. Same basic principle as they all are however this person made a very nice jig to assist in his work:

In the bigger scales there are also 3D printed tools possible.
Here is a manufacturer (nice 3D on the homepage) ...
https://unobtainium.digital/
... with very nice tooling in 1/12 for a Alfa Romeo car:

The result is fantastic!
