Title: Junkers J.1
Post by: jknaus on September 13, 2015, 09:05:24 AM
Okay, I feel confident posting this build so far. I was worried that I would start posting and bail again but I think this is far enough along that I can finish in the coming week or two.

Forgot to add spars to top center section. Hope it isnt going to cause problems.

Started wood with Tamiya flat flesh and then used burnt umber. When this dries I will go over with clear yellow.

Glued 2 .040" plastic rods together. Cut to approx size and then sanded the end into a wedge shape. Glued them to the inboard edges of the ailerons about .020 inch back from trailing edge. Added some scrap plastic inside and will fill with putty. Cut and sanded so it is a nice extension of the ailerons to fill the gap in the kit. I was going to use the side walls from the corrugated rad but could not get that to work. Unfortunately the pics look horrid, but here they are.

Looks like I need a touch up though, even though I did not see it live.

Let this all dry and add markings and then start assembling sub assemblies. In the meantime I need to work on the engine some more using Des' excelent guide. Feels good to get so far again and I'll be quite pleased to finish another.

Wonderful work, James!  Yes, you are well on your way to completion.  Some consider this bus ugly, I think it's beautiful.  A magnificent, purposeful design.

You are doing a fantastic job so far James, your wood colours are excellent, looking forward to seeing more. I always considerd this to be an ugly aeroplane but it was one of the first Wingnut kits I built, I now love it.

Thanks everyone. I've enjoyed this and I like it enough I think I'll get another. I think one of the things I enjoy the most about these kits is trying to recreate wood in paint I'm happy you li :)

Great "woodwork", James, as is the interior detail, you've got a real winner on the way here! I think Bud's statement covers it well, beautiful, magnificent, purposeful design, and you are doing it justice.

Thanks very much.
I have have been moding the engine as per yours Des and have the holes drilled. Got the top wing gloss coated for decals. Went to a funeral today for one of my co workers who passed away last week and not feeling too interested in modeling. Maybe in a few days will get back to this. Just feeling a bit old right and tired right now.

Really good work, James. I've always had a love/hate fee feeling
about the Junkers, but in going over your build, I am starting to
warm to the beastie.  Excellent job of the decals on the wing, my friend. :D

Thanks everyone. I was dreading the decals but they went on great. Used hot water and then added some water to the wing. Got the decals aligned and then tamped down with paper towel. Finall rolled over them with a Q-tip and then rubbed any bubbles out. I was thrilled that they sat so nicely.  Doing some more engine work but nothing worth taking pics yet.

Okay wings on. Next time I wont be so dopey and will leave the outboard wings until the struts are installed. She feels heavy and flimsy so not too much moving about. Just have to get engine done and prop and few other small things and then redo the wheels and rig and she'll be done.

James,
I find the colours very striking, I went back through your post to find what paint(s) you're using and couldn't..............what are the details on your green, mauve, and underside blue?
Almost complete and very much a "winner"!
Cheers,
Lance
Title: Re: Junkers J.1
Post by: jknaus on September 20, 2015, 10:57:48 PM
Thanks Lance. The colours are the ones called out by WNW. I mixed Tamiya paints for the mauve as listed, X16 + XF52 in 2:1, or there abouts.
The light blue is their suggestion also of XF23 and AF2 at 50:50ish.

Very little work done this week or weekend. I dremmeled out the end of the exhaust with a small ball bur and drilled out the tiny tubr at the exhaust also. Started painting. I tried to make the attachment bolts for the heads but I didnt do too well and you probably cant see them anyways. I have piston rods cut and will install when the cylinders are installed. The exhaust was NATO Black then hand painted Vallejo steel then a was or two or three of Vallejo track primer. Still more work needed. Hope I can get this engine done soon so I can finish up the build.

Thank you all. Its a bit of a struggle but I'm almost there. I decided to bring some tools up to the dining room table and do some work. Got gun and ring installed and engine and hoses before my arm gave out. Just the prop to finish and the controls to rig and she's done. So close now.

She looks great James!!!! ;) Have one in stash and although I think I will get to this one in around next year I still struggle to choose the scheme. I've seen just green ones, green&mauve and Im thinking about the one with lozenge on fuselage... but they all have their characters!!! :) I guess choosing scheme is part of fun and our hobby... ;)

Thankyou everyone. I've enjoyed this kit, but see where I could do better or at least differently. I think using the dining room table was a good move as it allows me to build without having to get down the stairs. Just a few more things and I'll be very happy. I wouldnt mind doing another but with lozenges although I really like the simplicty of the straight green one also. Again thanks :)

Also the one door wont fully close and trying to force it sprung the nose joint. So will have to fix and paint.

Thank you both. Means a lot to me. I should have mentioned that this prop was the first time I coloured the laminates with water colour pencils. A bit of a learning curve, but I think I'll try it more. Another lesson I learned on this site. I cant tout the camaraderie, freely shared experience, or incredible amount of freely given knowledge here. Thanks everyone.
