Title: Special Hobby Fokker D-V...Any Reviews?
Post by: skeeterbuck on September 11, 2015, 09:41:07 PM
Looking for info on the Special Hobby Fokker D-V kit.

Overall quality, accuracy etc. Just the normal stuff. I tried searching online and couldn't locate any.

Thanks!
Chuck

I have this kit, Chuck.  It's a nice kit, typical Special Hobby soft, grey plastic.  No resin or pe parts.  The wings are beautifully done with the center section notched and raised just as it should be.  The ribs are very finely molded with just the slightest hint of stitching.  Eduard should have copied this kit when doing their SSW wings.  Pretty good cockpit detail, but still room for super detailing.  The engine is a little weak, but there are plenty of replacements available.  Nice decal selection.  Overall, a very nice little kit and I think you would enjoy it.  Now that you made me get it out of the stash, I'm really tempted to build it.
Cheers,
Bud

I appreciate the review Bud. I always like building aircraft that are somewhat of the "beaten path" so to speak.  :)

Thanks!
Chuck

Me, too!
Sorry, Chuck.  There is a small, but nice pe fret.  It was hidden behind the decals.  Oops :-[
Cheers,
Bud

Well...I needed some paint anyway so I just ordered one from Sprue Bros. ::) It will give me a chance to try the Fokker streaked camo.

I agree Bud that was a great price at half off! ;D Thanks Ed for the "heads up".

A small stuff engine is great for this kit.

i have the kit too. it does have a small pe fret though .the plastic as mentioned is typical special hobby. the engine will need detailing or replacement. it goes together well. on mine i am to the point where the fuselage is closed up and ready for paint. this is my holding pattern as i need to do more research on the colors i want to use.ie which tone of cdl and do i want the streaks to lean to brown or green as i have seen both modeled. i say get it its a very decent kit of a rarely kitted subject.

Thanks Martin! Their engine kits do look the part. I wonder just how much of the engine will be visible with the cowl encircling the complete engine.  :-\

My Special Hobby Fokker D-V arrived in yesterday's post. I't looks to be a very nice kit and a rather straightforward build. Like Bud and Martin have indicated the engine is a little sparse. I'll have to see how much is actually visible. With the completely enclosed cowl and the rather large spinner I'm thinking that very little of the engine will actually be visible.  :-\

Thanks guys for the "mini-review" of this kit. You helped make my decision an easy one.

just a note . the d.v was early in the evolution of the fokker streaky camo and is much more sparse than on the dr.1.

Thanks for the heads up Scott about the streaked finish. The wings look to be much the same as the tripe, but on the fuselage it really trails off aft of the cockpit. On some aircraft It's virtually not existent from the mid section to the tail. The angles of the streaking are also unique to the aircraft. IMHO this is a style of finish that you should try and closely copy the particular aircraft you are modeling.
