Title: USAS Camel
Post by: poznanmid on August 17, 2015, 02:25:36 AM
1/32 Academy kit.  Started this a couple of years ago but it took me a long time to finish (due to a one year hiatus from model building resulting from a mobilization to the mid-east)  This is the first thing I've finished since getting back to the US.  I found a paint scheme for a camel from the USAS 41st Aero Squadron while surfing the interwebs.  I kludged together leftover decals from other kits I had to attempt to match the markings.  Reference I used is below.  Felt good to actually finish something finally.  Cheers!

The shading and overall "muted" finish are very nicely done, it's a very eye-catching Build. I had never heard of a 1:32 Airfix Camel, is it still in production?
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Poznanmid, great topic and weeeeelll done!
How went the Academy-kit together?
I am really looking foreward to Wingnut Wings' Camel, only to do an USAS-Version! (And a colorful trainer, of course. And, maybe, a Comic...)
Cheers
Richard

You have done a superb job on a somewhat difficult and under-rated kit, the markings are superb and the overall finish on this model is nothing short of excellent, the rigging has been executed perfectly, well done.

Des.

I agree with all that has been written. The colours are very striking in that you have given it a slightly uneven finish which looks very realistic. Excellent work on a kit which does not look very promising when in the box.

 Poznanmid,
Welcome aboard my old friend, good to have you here. Outstanding Camel with an equally outstanding choice of livery to boot.I began the  original Hobbycraft version of same kit as you way back in 2010 while recovering from my first stoke. Also I was building up a HC SPAD XII , sort of double build. Never quite got them both finished, decided it was best to shelve them both rather than throwing them against the wall. I did restart the Camel project but it was just not the time. So long story cut short she's sitting in the box at about 85%. Now I'm recovering from a much worse second stoke in 2014 so it may be awhile yet before I get back to building something. I think the Camel is likely to be back on the bench when I can. You may remember this project from several sites.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement.

Richard, the Academy kit is pretty good value for what it costs.  IIRC, I picked up the kit for ~$20 US on ebay.  There aren't too many 1/32 WWI kits you can find for that cost.  The downside is you have to spend a fair amount of time sanding down the wings to get rid of overly exaggerated rib details and interior details are incorrect or non-existent.  Des has an outstanding build log on this kit that I used as a reference regarding how to improve the kit.

Gregory, sorry to hear about your health issues.  I have the HC SPAD sitting on a shelf as well.  Hope you are back at the work bench soon and your recovery goes well.

Cheers!

A great Camel, poznanmid. I like its weathered PC10 very much.
