Title: 1/32 WnW Felixstowe f2a late
Post by: AndrewS on August 13, 2015, 08:21:19 PM
Hi!

It's time to start the leviathan  ;D

Here's the box

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01_zps1c8c4498.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01_zps1c8c4498.jpg.html)

I'm not going trough the content as usual, because I thin you have seen enough reviews and builds  ;)

I've choosen to do the box art scheme

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/BOx_02_zpsjrvxzicr.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/BOx_02_zpsjrvxzicr.jpg.html)

because I like it and because with my dad I've done an rc model in this scheme

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4335_zpswp3hev3z.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4335_zpswp3hev3z.jpg.html)
(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4338_zpsaf8mcase.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4338_zpsaf8mcase.jpg.html)

Dad with plane (now he has quit smoking  8) !)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4344_zps9p7cs2ov.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/IMG_4344_zps9p7cs2ov.jpg.html)

I've started with the interior. It' very similar to a yacht... a lot of wood everywhere, so I've used the proven method of oils over an acrylic base. Like on the W12 I'v preshaded the base

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_01_zpso1rrw7xu.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_01_zpso1rrw7xu.jpg.html)

Some parts with oils and other details added. (i'm not going trough every step, a lot to do, but if you are interested in something let me know)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_02_zpsoxyc5rvk.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_02_zpsoxyc5rvk.jpg.html)

On the side frames I've added a coat of tamiya clear orange to give them a different hue

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_03_zpszcgpt0uy.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_03_zpszcgpt0uy.jpg.html)

For the fuselage side I've choosen a lighter base color, then I'll add oils to simulate the ply sides

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_04_zpst0atsylm.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_04_zpst0atsylm.jpg.html)

All the interiors parts painted. Not a difficult task, but it takes time, also because you have to wait for the oils to dry, luckily this is a very hot summer.

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_05_zpsdvxrkbbo.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_05_zpsdvxrkbbo.jpg.html)

Some close-up's

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_06_zpslv8bkuye.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_06_zpslv8bkuye.jpg.html)

TIme to start the assembly

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_09_zpsw0ozlkav.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_09_zpsw0ozlkav.jpg.html)

A test for the fit...it seems ok

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_14_zpsjbd75m2e.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_14_zpsjbd75m2e.jpg.html)

And as usual everything will dissapear   ::)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_16_zpswrqmgudk.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_16_zpswrqmgudk.jpg.html)

Finally a shoot for let you see the size compared to the tamiya 1/32 p-51. it's big!!

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/01/wip_15_zps1plskd3g.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/01/wip_15_zps1plskd3g.jpg.html)

Just a last thing: Someone knows where the aerial should go? I've assembled the wireless aerial reel and I want to add the antenna to it, but where does it go? Straight trought the floor? It seems a little strange... Thanks for your help!

Andrew

You have done a superb job with all the interior painting and fitting Andrew, your wood colours are excellent. Such a shame that all the effort you put into the interior virtually disappears when the fuselage is closed up. Looking forward to seeing more progress on this one.

BTW, the radio controlled Felixstowe looks brilliant, does it fly well?

Very impressive start, Andrew, the interior work is magnificent. That big RC Version is spectacular as well, looks very real with the beautiful scenery behind. With the scheme you've chosen this will be a real "eye catcher"! 8)

Agree with the others about both models - they are truly excellent. That is one very large aeroplane, even in 1/72 scale - in 1/32 I would have to move house if I built it!

Great job on everything you've shown us so far! Beautiful wood, cockpit details, etc.!! Wow, this will be a stunning model when finished!

The rc model is not tested yet. We had some engine troubles last time, I hope that we can test it soon  ;)

Great start, Andrew. Or much more than just a start. You are well on the way!

The aerial? I had the same headache, I read about it in 'The Spider Web'. But unfortunately I have not got any hint, where should it go. My guess is, that they just reeled it out through one of crew openings, I cannot imagine any hole in the hull for it. I would bet for one of side hatches for waist gunners, to avoid a danger of contact with propellers. But this is only my theory. In my model I decided to have the aerial secured on the reel.  ;) After all, they unreeled it only when airborne, not when on the trolley...

Beautiful work on the Felix, Andrew.  I really like your
wood tones.  I have to say the RC version is certainly
impressive and beautifully done.  Looking forward to
your next updates, my friend.

Thanks,

Hi!

I've finished the interior .
Almost all of the rigging will be invisible once inside that fuselage, but at least I know that it's there   ::)
No problem so far, this kit is a joy to build.

Meanwhile I've started to work on the engines. I've basically put on the base colors not much more.
On the block I wanted a weathered look, so I've tried the salt technique: I've sprayed the base grey, once dry I wetted the surface, randomly sprinkled some salt and I waited for it to dry. Once dry I sprayed a slightly darkned base color. When it was dry with a stiff brush I removed the salt and here's the result. It doesn't look bad to me... In real life is less evident than in pictures. I had taken some pictures of the process but they have dissapeared from my hard disk: digital carpet monster???  :o

Hi!

Back from holidays I've started to prepare the struts.
The base coat for the wood finish is on

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/02/Struts_01_zpsnilsi2wf.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/02/Struts_01_zpsnilsi2wf.jpg.html)

I have a "problem" with the engine mount struts....
Are they seams lines (pointed with red arrows)? On a WnW it seems so strange  ::)
On my references I've found non good pictures of this area, so maybe someone who has already built this kit can help me  :)

Thanks!

I took them for seam lines and sanded them down. There were no such lines on the leading and trailing edges of those struts, where they usually are on strut elements. I suppose WNW chose such an unusual approach due to those extrusions mid way the strut, where the inner bays landing wires pass through.

Hi!

I've glued together the fuselage.
No problems here, just take your time to check that everything is in the right place.
The dent in the back of the fuselage is my mistake, not WnW  :P

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/02/Hull_01_zps4nhwzwb1.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/02/Hull_01_zps4nhwzwb1.jpg.html)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/02/Hull_02_zpspmodu54e.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/02/Hull_02_zpspmodu54e.jpg.html)

I've finished the struts with oils.
After the oil has dried I've sprayed some tamiya clear orange to protect the finish.
Here's an example.
The black parts are not finished, this only a base coat. They will need some drybrushing

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/02/Struts_03_zpsd2ffuav9.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/02/Struts_03_zpsd2ffuav9.jpg.html)

I've also painted the radiators. Tamiya base paint and some black oil wash.
I still have to add some small pulleys that moved the louvres in front of the radiators.
I have to search something in my old PE or spares parts...

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/02/Rad_01_zpsg6jmy3ga.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/02/Rad_01_zpsg6jmy3ga.jpg.html)

That's all.
Next I think that I'll add the covers of the fuselage, so that I can start paint it.

Cheers,

Andrea

Iv'e added some details to the lateral mg mounts. In the real plane pictures you can see two wires with turnbuckles.
I've added them using 1/48 gaspatch turnbuckles

Hi!

Some progress.

I've painted the interior of the cockpit covers.
I've left the ejection marks, they will be invisible at the end... It' s ok for me  ::)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Close_01_zpscnskowva.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Close_01_zpscnskowva.jpg.html)

The I've installed them on the fuselage.
The fit is quite good, just take your time. Some putty on the rear and on the nose to blend the surfaces

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Close_02_zpsij6yhmdr.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Close_02_zpsij6yhmdr.jpg.html)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Close_03_zpsy5ahfruj.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Close_03_zpsy5ahfruj.jpg.html)

Some masking and the model is ready for some primer to check the finish

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Close_04_zpskueskmfn.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Close_04_zpskueskmfn.jpg.html)

On the rudder I think that I'll remove the tab on the bottom. It's not present on the real aircraft , it's there only for strenght. It' squite visible so I think that is worth to remove it.

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Close_05_zpsi6rjf9oe.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Close_05_zpsi6rjf9oe.jpg.html)

That's all

Andrea

Fine progress. I see you have the same issues I had. Filling of the rear turtledeck, the nose... Masking of those openings...
Though I had a different view on those sink marks under the hull covers - some may be viewed through the waist-gunners' stations.
Are you planning a bare wood beaching troley?

Thanks to everybody for the nice comments.

About the sink marks... maybe a section would be visible form the waist stations, but once the MG are in place is very difficult. Maybe only a modeller that has allready built this would take a look to see if I was too lazy to fill the marks   :P

The beaching trolley will be painted grey, but I want to experiment with hairspray technique, so I made a bare wood base. I want a well used trolley  :)

Hi!

While I'm preparing the fuselage for painting I've tried a new method to paint the clear linen surfaces.

On my FE2b I've prayed a base coat of linen paint, then I've masked all the ribs and sprayed a slighlty darkned base color to give the illusion of transparencies.
It worked well, but it was impossible to judge the the contrast between the 2 shades before removing the masking, so often I had to correct the effect overspraying some base color to tone down the contrast.

This time I've done this:
1) I sprayed a white base
2) I've masked the ribs and structure details
3) I've sprayed black paint
4) Finally I've sprayed the linen color, in light passes, to achieve the correct contrast

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/03/Linen_01_zpsah8vqwpr.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/03/Linen_01_zpsah8vqwpr.jpg.html)

I'm satisfied and I think that I'll use this technique and all the wings surfaces

Andrew

Thanks!

Just to be clear: I've not invented the technique, I've simply copied a technique I've seen used on armor models, where the model is first painted in black and white
and then light coats of color are airbrushed over until you reach the desired effect.
I thought that could be used for the canvas effect and I've tried  ;)

Hi!

I've painted the white base (tamiya white with some balck and brown to tone it down).
The I've masked for sprazing the red. Quite tricky...with only 1 picture of the real aircraft and 1 profile it was not easy  ::)

Hi!

I've painted the underside of the wings with canvas color.
I'm satisfied with the result.

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/04/Under_01_zpscwr0wbxr.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/04/Under_01_zpscwr0wbxr.jpg.html)

I've also decide to paint the roundels and the rudder stripes instead of using decals.
I've used Misterkit red and blue raf/rfc roundels colors. They are lighter than the kit decals, but usually the misterkit paint WW1 paints are well researched...
What do you think?

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/04/color_zpsktbymjps.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/04/color_zpsktbymjps.jpg.html)

Now I'll start to paint the top of the wings. More updates in the next days!

Cheers,

Andrew

 Hi!

Time to post something new  :D

I've painted the roundels on the underside of the wing.
I've cut some mask on frisket and painted them

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/05/mask_01_zpsjj9bobi3.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/05/mask_01_zpsjj9bobi3.jpg.html)

Then I've painted the top surfaces.
For the color I've used the Misterkit PC10.
I needed to break up a little the finish, so I'v edone some pre-shading in black and white

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/05/Wing_04_zpsptchb2jb.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/05/Wing_04_zpsptchb2jb.jpg.html)

Here's the finish result

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/05/Wing_01_zpsrf9qmxtb.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/05/Wing_01_zpsrf9qmxtb.jpg.html)

(http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg486/Andrew_Stef/Felixstowe/05/Wing_03_zpsvfw7ncpy.jpg) (http://s1240.photobucket.com/user/Andrew_Stef/media/Felixstowe/05/Wing_03_zpsvfw7ncpy.jpg.html)

Now I have to paint the details and add some weathering

Bye

Andrew

Hi!

First off all thank to everyobdy for the support.

About the Misterkit PC10:
I've tweaked a picture to show you the right color (at least on my monitor...). The previous pictures were not showing the exact color of pc10.
It's greenish

Hi!

Between various eating marathons I've managed to work on the Felix  ;D

I've painted the emtallic parts on the wings and added some shading around the ribs with tamiya smoke.
I'll add some more weathering when the wings will be in place

I' ve also assembled the engines.
They are almost straight from the box. Ive only added a couple of oil lines that go from the camshaft to the crankcase and some fuel lines.
Nothin else for now
