Title: 1/32 Curtiss JN-4 Canuck
Post by: pietro on July 29, 2015, 08:00:55 AM
Hello everyone, it occurs to me that the best way to get WNW to produce a Canuck, is to scratch-build one first. While not up to Des's  level, I'm going for it. My approach is to make what I can with brass and aluminum for strength. This fore ward fuselage is not completely accurate because it's not going to show. The main structure will be skinned with .005" Evergreen, while engine bay panels will get the brass shim treatment. All the struts will be resin-cast with wire centers. I will do only the top end of the OX-5 because the rest won't be visible. I'll be using those beautiful wire wheels from UMM, Gaspatch turnbuckles, and I know it's not accurate, but I really want to use those wicker seats. The Canuck was a different bird from the "Jenny", so I'll pointing out the differences as the build progresses. Thanks for looking. Pietro

Des, I can't thank you enough for all your help!   WOW two Blue Angels just flew above my trees!! I think they're practicing for Sea Fair next weekend, but they have to come clear out here over the peninsula to get turned around. I guess they can't as sharply as a bi-plane.  Pietro

Hello everyone,  here's a few more in-progress shots. The turtle deck, removable on the real one, is .005" styrene scribed on one side to create the stringer effect. I've started on the floor board and seat frame. The little OX-5 will have fully detailed top end but nothing else. Thanks for looking. Pietro

hello everyone and Thank You all for your kind words of encouragement! Here's some more in progress (slow) shots of the Canuck. I've made RTV molds of WNW RE-8 wings, which will be beaten into submission until they (the resulting castings) resemble Canuck wing sections. I'm having issues with my brass reinforcing wire in the castings. Will post pictures after success. Thank you for looking. Pietro

Ron, thank you for your offer. The problem was adhesion. Now if I thoroughly clean the brass wire of oxidation and finger oils, I'm having better success.

Hello Everyone. Please let me thank you all for your kind and generous comments. Here are some shots of my progress(?) on the Canuck so far. These are casting made from the WNW Re8 wings which I then cut up and modified (the castings not the RE8). Note that the Canuck didn't utilize the cut-outs on the upper or lower wings. I will next spray them with Tamiya Racing White which provides a nice glossy light beige for the Aviattic fabric treatment. The strut grove, as Barbara calls them, are resin casting with a wire center. The cockpit "cover" is .005" aluminum with UMM USA lead wire and Micro Mark rivet decals. Thanks, again for looking.

Beautiful work Pietro!  Your resin castings of wings and struts look perfect, and you are obviously very skilled and experienced in that medium.  Any chance we can persuade you to do a tutorial on the Forum tio explain the materials and techniques you use to achieve such fine results?  A how-to guide for the rest of us!  Pretty please?!!  ;D ;)

Regards,

Bob

ps:  If Ron or someone else has already done this, please forgive me.  However, in my view (and in my case) the more instruction we (I) get the better! ;)

I second Bob's motion! Bo delivered some great casting info with the Albatros (I think) but I would especially like to know about casting wings and flatter objects.

Hello everyone, it's been a little crazy around here making preparations for Barbara's Dad's 98th birthday. I wish you could all meet Harold(I love him), He was a motorized Army Scout during WW 2  riding Harley WLAs. Here's a few shots of progress(glacial) on the Canuck project. The temporary paper  hood is for a pattern for an aluminum hood and, also, to help me determine how engine detail to omit. Thanks for looking.

Hello, everyone! I have to apologize to you all for my absence. It seems that 1:1 scale adult things sometimes rear their ugly heads and demand our attention. The drama with Barbara's Dad continues.
Here are some more in progress shots of the Canuck Project. My intention is not to build any more engine detail that isn't visible with the hoods on. Each cylinder head comprises two TAURUS valve springs, one TAURUS spark plug, GRANDTLINE HO queen post, photo-etch letter "H" and a PART kitchen spoon handle for the rocker arm itself. This completely complies with mantra: Cheap & Easy every time. Also shown are the patterns for the main hood, and the radiator to be formed from brass. Thank you all very much for looking.

I guess it can fit in either category, but I think the scratch build section isn't only for finished models. Des often has his full build reports there. But, not a problem! As long as we get to see what you're working on! :)

Hello everyone, I just want to apologize to the forum for lack of updates. There simply isn't that much progress. The rib tapes decaling is quite tedious and I am taking a very labor intensive to create my louvered hood panels. But, finally, to be completely honest, I started work on a 1/12 lotus 49, that a friend gave me. The old Tamiya kit was basically a motorized toy with greatly simplified suspension and compromised details. So, you see, I have no choice but to give it the full Gerald Wingrove treatment! I will try to post some more Canuck pictures soon.
