Hi again,
Just ordered a lovely Brisfit and the new Barracuda wicker seats & HGW fabric belts ;)
I won't be building it for a bit, but I couldn't resist researching possible options... I really like the thought of this - I believe it's a 141 Squadron home defence night fighter 1918. Wingnuts say it's probably yellow/red or yellow black? So couple of questions..
1. Thoughts on colour of stripes?
2. Thoughts on wing colours - standard PC10/ CDL?
3. Roundels - are these the same as the night fighter option in the kit ie blue/PC10/red or just blue with a solid red centre?
4. Rudder flash? blue/PC10/red?
Seems slightly odd to have a brightly coloured fuselage and low visibility/ night markings?
Any suggestions on how I could represent the cock squadron emblem? Does anyone have an image of that - can't seem to find one on Google?
Many thanks
Guy

Good choice, Guy! Looking forward to following along
with the build. The stripes are certainly a departure from
PC-10! You know you have a lot to live up to after your
awesome Felixstowe! Onward and upward, my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

I haven't seen a Brisfit built here in a while, and never in the color schemes you're thinking of. I can't wait to see your build!

Brisfit? Love it!
(By the way: No idea about the colours! The light stripes look like yellow to me, but: I don't know!)
-
I thought very hard about doing a set of decals which would include these two but the uncertainty over the colours was just too great, I thought.
Here's the two colour combinations I thought most likely:
The bottom two might be black and Battleship Grey or PC10 and BSG. Although not visible in the photo, I think two-colour tail stripes quite likely, to match the apparent colours of the fuselage roundels. The under wings look very dark, so black? and with the white circle marking specified for night flying at about this time. Those colours would match the colours worn by night bombing FE2Bs of 100 Sqn. Wing struts are shown as wood, but could also be black, difficult to be sure from the photo. The cockerel on the diagonal striped one seems to be plain white but the other appears to have details (comb, beak and legs) in a different colour - I've gone for red.
Would love to see you do one of these in whatever colours you deem most likely - there are others!! Hope this helps a bit...
EDIT: The tops of the wings would be pure guesswork - given the lively fuselage decor, I'd not be surprised if that was continued onto the upper wing surfaces in some way - chevron striping for the diagonal job would look very fetching!
Incidentaly, I think these markings were intended as some sort of disruptive camouflage, akin to the SE5a with dimonds on all upper surfaces, intended to break up the aircraft's outline when seen from above - another reason to suppose the wings were also striped in some way and a big vote for grey v. yellow - IMHO!
-
Great choice Guy, you will have a great deal of fun building what I belive is the best kit Wingnuts have ever produced.

Thanks chaps,
Rowan, that's amazingly helpful, thanks - I just made an enquiry on your website as to the 32007 Brisfit night fighter sheet you've got in the pipeline? Was just curious if this was one of them? I don't suppose I could twist your arm for a decent graphic of the cockerel?
I would never have guessed grey, but it certainly makes sense?
Also I just found this too...

Guy
Ps I quite like the idea of it being a little ambiguous - as it leaves me more artistic licence!
-
Ps do you reckon the top wing would be black grey too?
The dark paint looks too dark for my eye for the above pictured PC10/ grey?
It's good fun guessing anyway!
Guy

Pps
I sure everyone knows of it but the 'Wings Palette' website is good for ideas..

Seems to me there isn't enough contrast between the two colours in the Hochmuth graphic. I'd be so tempted to do red and white with this. I have a thing for candy cane striping on aircraft ever since I was a child.
-
Looking forward to this, Guy. Having recently started my own Biff (in more traditional garb), I'm hoping you get to this soon!
Chris

I am looking forward to this one. The scheme will be exciting no matter what color combination you choose!

Really looking forward to this one, Guy. The Biff's one of my favorites and I love the night fighter schemes. As it is a night fighter, I'm inclined to favor the grey and PC10 option, or grey and NIVO or even NIVO and PC10. To get an idea as to just how much contrast there is between grey and PC10, take a look at any photo of a Snipe or Camel with grey metal panels. It will be clear to you that with period photography being what it was, grey appears much lighter than PC10. Whatever you choose, I'll enjoy following your build.
Cheers,
Bud

You had me there Bud..
I had to google it! For others like me that's - NIVO Night Invisible Varnish Orfordness - a dark grey green.
Yep, my heart wants me to go for the yellow black but my head, and sensible logic, is screaming grey/ black..
As for the wings Rowan thinks black top and bottom - probable stripes on the upper surfaces of the top & lower wings?
In the picture the roundel is quite distinctive on the lower wing of the 2nd aircraft in, but not on the first?
The top underside also looks a little too light for black?
What do you reckon?

Still looking around...
I also like the idea of having an all white aircraft..

Does anyone know any more about this aircraft? 1918? Or post war?
And found this:

A Bristol Jupiter (an F2b with a Jupiter engine and oleo legs)
Anyone know of a 1/32 Jupiter engine?

Guy, that first photo shows Capt W Sydney Addison and Lt Wilmot Hudson Fysh of the AFC preparing to take of on a mission from Mejdel, Palistine, early 1918. Cool looking scheme. Planning on doing a White and PC10 scheme myself one day.
Cheers,
Bud

I know Silver Wings do a 1/48 Jupiter engine (and Karaya do a 1/48 version) but I do not know if it is the right type

Thanks Bud, so is that one of the two tone schemes then? I thought it looked all white?

Thanks but it's 1/32..

Guy, some time ago I have built a small Roden's Brisfit in that white-PC10 colours. You might like it for your WNW model. It is A-7198 from 1. Sqn of AFC basing in El Medjel, Palestine in March 1918, flown, among others, by Lt. E. Headlam and Lt. E. Beaton.

Amen, Bud...some day, me too...when I can snag an F2b... love the AFC/RFC/RAF's history in Palestine...(your man Fysh there went on to co-found QANTAS.)
-
This might be a good place to start, Guy.

I have this sheet in 1/48 scale, but can't honestly speak to the quality. They look good, but I seem to recall reading a negative review somewhere. I expect I'll have to experiment with some none crucial markings before committing them to a model.
Cheers,
Bud

There are a couple of silver schemes possible that didn't have all the extra slats tail and accoutrements. There's a pic of one in the datafile of F4717? In silver with a 2 colour fuselage stripe I was going to do.
-
Thanks Bud, but I'll probably use masks although it's helpful to see the image...

Dave, ooh, that's piqued my interest.. Longer exhausts though, but otherwise looks like a wartime Brisfit?

You can't actually see the exhausts on the only photo as the top wing is in the way. It certainly stops before the fuselage roundel. The datafile goes for yellow wheels and red yellow red band.
-
Thanks again Dave,
Any chance of posting a link to that photo?
Guy
-
I'll zap u a photo personally, from the datafile.
-
That would be great ;D
Thanks Dave..
