Hi y'all!
That's my new build.
I'll be off a few days in Venice (Italy ;)) and I have a few things to finish first, so this first post should not have a new post before a little while.
But I just couldn't resist sharing with you the first part; the wonderful Aviattic's engine dedicated to that bird.
Ok, it's a beauty. Lots of tiny pieces (individual spark plugs and the like), some photoetched pieces if you want the propeller removed, blablabla, nothing that you probably haven't heard before about this work of art. But other than that, how many of you have built a resin engine, beautifully detailed and such, and be extremely annoyed about it not fitting the cowling?
Nothing of the like with this baby. It FITS THE ORIGINAL COWLING! 8)
It may sound trivial for some, but for me, it felt so nice not having to destroy the integrity of that engine, that it was just the icing on the cake. So here it is.
A base of Alclad aluminium. Some wash of black on the cylinders, followed by some touches of blue and red transparent gloss. Some Tam smoke on the rest with some touches of tobacco acrylic ink. Added the spark wires and that's it. Ready to...be put aside till the end of the build I guess.

(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/x4/002-2-_imagesia-com_x4kv_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/002-2-_x4kv)
I'm now in the process of painting the wooden parts (seats, propeller, and interior) and experimenting on that specific wood varbnish. Think I found something satisfactory... :)

Very nice engine, Iwik.

A great engine Iwik, well done! -- but for maximum realism it needs to be on fire or exploding. <joke>
-
Great work on the engine, Iwik. I'm very interested in this Kit however all I`ve got for now is the Pheon Decal Set, I`ll be following your Build with great interest!
Cheers,
Lance

Fantastic looking engine, Iwik! I'm glad to see that it fits in the kit cowling without modification. That is a big deal.
Cheers,
Bud

Well you know I will be following this build ...

Nice work on the engine! I must not be paying close enough attention as I totally missed that Aviattic had one in their line. Going to their site to see what else I missed :-[

I have this one on wait for a while, so i can follow how to do it. :)
And have fun in Italy.

Hi Y'all!
Hey Verbeek! Nice engine but it really looks a bit too rusty!
Here is a follow up!
Got started to modify the fuselage. As you can see, the panel lines are way too pronounced and the handles don't have much depth and the rear ones are wrongly aligned with the fuselage spar:
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/2_imagesia-com_xt6m_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/2_xt6m)
So here's the new one, although I'll wait for the fuselage to be closed to engrave the perpendicular lines:
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/3_imagesia-com_xt5s_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/3_xt5s)
Next I tackle the cowl by adding a lip to the front and a double one to the rear with heated plastic threads:
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/4_imagesia-com_xt62_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/4_xt62)
Then the cône. The original one needed surgery to remove any sign that the front was a two part piece. After much sanding, I added an extra lip on each apertures with flattened lead wires.
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/5_imagesia-com_xt71_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/5_xt71)
The upper front deck with some Spandaus. The jackets are HGW ones, while the guns themselves are resin parts that were given to me by Philippe Jourdan long ago for his never released 1/32 DV. I added some extra details and prepared the part for some futur rigging.
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/6_imagesia-com_xt6t_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/6_xt6t)
The propeller was painted using oils over acrylics with Tamiya masking tapes and underlying in darker colors the frontier between the two wooden shades. I coated the whole thing with acrylic oils (tobacco) and finish with a light coat of orange semi gloss.
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/7_imagesia-com_xt64_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/7_xt64)
The interior wooden parts, painted with basically the same methods. Note the added support for the compass (not yet painted...)
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/8_imagesia-com_xt65_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/8_xt65)
The right side of the cokpit detailed with mostly fine copper wires.
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/9_imagesia-com_xt63_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/9_xt63)
And the left side:
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/xt/10_imagesia-com_xt6w_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/10_xt6w)
I'm off to start the paint job...

Great progress, Iwik! It is going to be a gem.

Hello,
looking fantastic!!! :)
Lukas

Hi y'all!
New job with new working hours will make this build a little bit slower than it already is... >:(
But a new important step is done:
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/y4/11_imagesia-com_y4ph_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/11_y4ph)
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/y4/12_imagesia-com_y4pj_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/12_y4pj)
(http://img.imagesia.com/fichiers/y4/13_imagesia-com_y4pi_large.JPG) (http://imagesia.com/13_y4pi)
Contrasts in the paint job are exagerated for them to be visible once everything is closed.
The fuselage is now closed! A bit of sanding and I'll be glueing the lower wings.
See you soon I hope!
Ciao

Hi y'all!
Been a while since I last made an update, but you'll understand why.
I've been working on the wood fuselage with oils, panneling, and waiting between each steps that the paint was driy enough to mask the next pannel to be worked on. Took ages, but thank God it was quite sunny here, so the drying time was about two days between each steps.
In the meantime, I found time to work on other parts such as the masts and such, panting them white and then spraying them with some off white paint to give them a dirty look. Some dark paint was then applied to simulate chipping.
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/8130144114.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=8130144114.jpg)
Here how I proceeded with the fuselage.
A first layer of acrylic paint of radome and some other one on different panels (useless as you will see, so don't bother...) with a bit of pre shading (pretty useless as well...)
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/7145058215.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=7145058215.jpg)
Then the panelling began with burnt sienna paint, apply with various amount of paint depending on the panels...
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/4031396816.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=4031396816.jpg)
The panelling is done:
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/4892332517.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=4892332517.jpg)
Then, to darken everything, I sprayed many thin layers of transparent "tobacco" acrylic ink.
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/3683108118.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=3683108118.jpg)
I'm pretty happy with the result as if it's what I was reaching for.
Next I will be working on the black cowling and metal parts.
ciao

looking very nice indeed! What rib-tapes are you using? They look photoetched?
-
Beautiful, love the dark wood grain and the chipping on the white parts.

Truly spectacular paint work, Iwik.

Looking good my friend :)
Terri

What rib-tapes are you using? They look photoetched?
Thanks to you all!
Yes, Petrov, these are photoetched rib tapes. A new product soon to be sold by Aviattic. More on that later when I'll be in the process of laying the decals.
For now all I can say is that I was quite skeptical about photoetch to represent rib tapes, but those are surprisingly thin and easy to glue on the wings.
Won't be able to work on the beast for the new 3 days... >:(

Hi y'all!
At last it's done!
Here are a few pics of the last steps.
As mentionned previously, the photoetched rib stitchings were really easy to apply and their look is really nice, although I'd like Aviattic to make the embossed design a little more proeminent, cos it tends to blend off a bit when you apply the decal rib tapes.
But see for yourself.
First glue them on your kit:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/5247759819.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=5247759819.jpg)
Apply some neutral paint, and then some preshading:
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/5331033720.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=5331033720.jpg)
Then the rib tapes (I won't hide the fact that it takes forevvvvvvveeeeeeeeeer).
(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/2259893121.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=2259893121.jpg)
You can see the start of the with the homemade tunrbuckles.
Then the finished product.

(http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/599425009.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=599425009.jpg)
I'm working on the paint job for a figure, and once done I'll post some more pics with outside lights.
Hope you liked it!
