Title: Hello from Manchester, UK
Post by: Dharma66 on April 15, 2015, 09:28:25 PM
Hi,

I'm Phil. I found this forum when it was mentioned on the WingNut Wings Facebook group.

I can't remember how I found the WNW FB group...someone one some other modelling forum must have mentioned it.

I've not done much model making in the last two and a half decades, but over the last year or two, my interest has been rising again. I've got as far as trying a few models from Tamiya and Hasegawa etc...mostly Spitfires, because rather predictably, I think it's one of the most beautiful objects ever created.

I have, however, always been fascinated by WWI aviation...the astonishing apparent flimsiness of construction, and the corresponding astounding levels of bravery required to to fly around in them, wielding machine guns, and all that. And a lot of the machines do have a real elegance about them.

When I found the WNW FB group, and ever since, I've been absolutely flabbergasted at the standard of modelling going on there. It was clear to me that it was at least a couple of step-changes up from where I am, and even a step-change above almost everything I saw on other fora. So I've come here to see if I can pick up a few of the techniques. Particularly the painting of woods and cloths just amazes me.

After looking at the 'What's a good model for my level' page on this website last night, I've ordered a 1/32 Roden Fokker Dr1 (the absolute beginners choice) on eBay immediately, so that's on its way, along with a Eduard photo etch set to match.

All I need to do now is have a clear-out of the garage to reclaim my workbench from a winters worth of "I'll just put it here for now", then I can make a start.

Looking forwards to digging around the forum to see what's going on!

Welcome to the madhouse! ;D

I also suffer from the "I'll just put it here for now" syndrome. You should see my workbench. (Actually, I can't even see it! :o ;D)

Cheers,
George

Thanks for the welcomes! Good to see a couple of people I already saw on the FB group!

I've been looking around at some techniques hints and tips, and may try my hand at a few new things soon, such oil pants for wood.

Watching out for the delivery van :)

Still waiting on the Roden kit. Pity, I was hoping to start over the weekend, and it was despatched first class on Thursday.

Still, it means I've managed to do lots of reading and research...and lots of drooling over other kits...

In fact, after seeing that WNW kits can sell out, I've ordered an Albatros D.Va (OAW), just to be on the safe side :)
