Title: Staaken E/20 Transport 1/72nd Vac from Classic Plane
Post by: NinetythirdLiberator on April 05, 2015, 02:01:17 PM
All...

This model, though rough, hit's all the right buttons.

I finally finished by adding engine tops just protruding from the nacelle tops.  It's hard to see what was really up there.  I think they were a bit more flush, but this adds a little interest to the top of the beast. All that aluminum gets boring.  I also added exhausts and the props/hubs, which ended up being carved from plastic.  I needed different pitches on each side so scrounging wouldn't really help much.  These are the first props I've ever carved and I have to say, though the shape isn't perfect by any means, I won't be afraid to try it again and they should only get better  ;) Next time I'll try with light and dark laminated wood.

And here is a poor shot showing my ancient Airfix Halibag along side the Staaken.  It's cool to think the general plan was there in 1918-1919 including metal etc.  The Staaken is smaller, but not by much!  It lacks retractable undercarriage and power turrets but that's about it.  A slightly later development even had an enclosed pilot's office!

It was a pleasing project and being a vac, it certainly leaves you satisfied even if it's not perfect!  The biggest flaw was that the fuselage sides were not the same size to start with (maybe I sanded them too much on one side??) and now a twist has crept into the rear fuselage making the stabilizer decidedly off kilter  :'(  But I can live with it if I don't tell anyone...do'h!

Thanks for looking...And thanks, Des, for letting me post this VERY LATE WWI build here on your site...Dan

Brilliant model and remarkable design for the time.  Congratulations on another superb vac, Dan.  You did a fantastic job on adding interest to the overall aluminum finish.
Cheers,
Bud

Beautifully done Dan, this is certainly a very advanced design for its time, the pilots are very exposed though  ???

Outstanding work on this one Dan! As Bud said you added just enough to make the mostly aluminum finish interesting.

Well done, and such an interesting and unusual subject to boot. Nice comparison shot with the Halifax too, I really liked that.

That is a really interesting aircraft - another one I had not heard of before! You really are the master at the vacuform - I would never have been able to produce a model anywhere nearly as good as that one. A master modeller indeed.

Thanks, Warren!  There were lots of really cool models there this year.  Needless to say...this was the only Staaken!  ;)
