Title: Mirage Hobby Flower Class Corvette
Post by: lcarroll on March 24, 2015, 05:29:53 AM
I took a "Subject Break" from my monomaniacal preoccupation with WWI Aircraft recently to build a WWII Canadian Flower Class Corvette from the Mirage HMS Zinnia 1:350 Scale Kit. It's a gift for my Brother in Law, whose Father served in HMCS Chambly on Atlantic Convoy Escort duties for 3-4 years.
It was different to say the least, the first ship I've done since a youngster and, at 7 inches in length, a real test for the eyes and fat fingers! The PE is from White Ensign Models , excellent stuff to work with, and paints all mixed from Tamiya Acrylics. The ensign on the mast is a 45 year old decal from a Danish Company (Permeta) that produced a Canadian markings Sheet in the 1960's. Yes, I bought it myself so long ago I'd forgotten I had it!
They say a change is as good as a rest; in this case I'm looking very much forward to a rest building a 1:32 Scale "Stringbag" of the WWI variety..............

You have done a brilliant job with this build Lance, your brother-in-law should be very proud to own such a magnificent model.

Super work, Lance. I've thought about getting a Flower class corvette kit several times and  you make it look so tempting .... But well done for such an accomplished outcome.

Best wishes
Nigel

That's a beautiful build there Lance. I've often thought of branching off into ships, and your build certainly inspires me to do so.

Des, Nigel, and warren,
Thanks for the positive comments, it's a bit daunting at first as each part and step is new territory. The high point for me was the amount of scratch building required to change the profile to match the several refits done from the fore-masted early version to the 1944-45 version I wanted to duplicate. The change of genre was refreshing but I'm looking forward to getting into the next WWI Aircraft Build, and staying there! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful Corvette, Lance.  You have made a stunning little "workhorse" of the RCN.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

She's gorgeous, Lance!  From the looks of her, one would think you'd been building ship models all your life.  Like Warren, I've been flirting with the idea of building ships ever since returning to modeling seven years ago.  I'm hoping that building the Felixstowe will satisfy that particular craving.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Ernie and Bud, I think that's enough "adventure" for the time being, just not quite sure of what to tackle next. :-\
I have a long overdue Seafire Mark XV project to do in RCN Colours (another off topic, for here, project) but may have to slide a WWI subject in front. I'm going to go with the highest "fun" index for sure.
Cheers,
Lance

This is an excellent build - very well completed.

For anyone interested in these ships there is a thread on the Revell 1/72 scale of the same class of corvette on Airfix Tribute Forum - demonstration builds - by an ex-navy man and a first rate modeller. That is going to well worth keeping an eye on…..

James & LM,
Thanks for the compliments Guys! I have the 1:72 Kit "stashed" , for now I'm thinking of investigating the Revell 1:144 version when it hits the Market.
Cheers,
Lance

I am joining the chorus late here! Outstanding work on your Corvette! I really thought it was a much larger scale until I read your post! Beautiful!

Thanks for the kind remarks Rick, and Yes, she is tiny. My eyes are hopefully back to normal, and kudos to Optivisor! ;)

I was looking at getting one of those to build, but then I heard that Revell Germany is bringing out a 1/144 kit this year so I will wait and see. I will probably get one of the Mirage kits as well, since I have a few 1/350 kits, the Dresden and Emden and plan on getting a dreadnought down the road.

The photoetch really enhances it. Have you tried making a waterline model ?

This is the first time since I was a very young modeller that I've done a ship, a gift for a relative actually. It was a nice change of pace however it will probably be some time, if ever, before I try another although the Revell Kit you mention may bear looking at!
Cheers,
