Hello friends,
here is my new project:

Xan! That is the best wicker seat I've ever seen! Absolutely gorgeous! 1/48 scale?
Cheers,
Bud
-
Beautiful job with the wicker seat Xan, what technique did you use.
Des.
-
Very impressive Xan. What plane will you wrap around it?
Best wishes
Nigel
-
hey Xan!
this is a very good seat!
I have made a fiew myself, both in 48 and in 32 scale, and I know how hard it is to wave one consitently, to tell nothing of the pattern in the middle.... very hard to obtain.
it seems to me that you used copper wire to knit it, but i found that copper wire is to stiff to bend tight: how did you do that?
great craftmanship overall!
ciao
edo

1/48 scale?
forever!hi Bud ;)
what technique did you use.
hello Des and edo!
photo etched (part)
I bought a dedicated photoetched but the seat wasn't accurate >:(
As you can see I can compare with a real reconstruction one, so I have to be precise...
What plane will you wrap around it?
Salut Nigel!
well let's play at riddles a little bit...
who will gess first the country which used those kind of seat ?
I my french forum were I asked the same thing a friend of mine told me the seat wasn't accurate, too low and not flared enough:
I send him out of my topic for a week of course!
Xan
-
Well, my first thought Xan was maybe something like a Camel or a Brisfit.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
You were not very far with the Brisfit nigel,
my new project is a Bristol Scout...
I liked the cage a poule idea , wich is to do 1915 planes, as we are on 2015...
locking in internet for information, I find this blog:
https://bristolscout.wordpress.com/ (https://bristolscout.wordpress.com/)
David and Rick Bremner conserved three pieces of their grand dad aircraft .
The Grand dad FDH Bremner, was RNAS fly sub lieutenant and pilote in Imbros isle in greece since december of 1915.
They decided to rebuild the plane, their granddad spoke about when they were kids, the bristol scout n°1264.
Rick at the left and David at the right.
I found the idea very worm; Any reconstructin project is very respectable, but to do the grandfather aircraft is like charging wood and fabric of emotion, love, and a splendid tribute.
It It goes perfectly with my way to understand modeling , represent historical aircraft because behind them there are men whose memoris can be remembered thanks to our models
there is four pics of this plane:
IMbrul in mars of 1916
(http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/10/24/1414142083672_Image_galleryImage_Collect_picture_of_FDH_Br.JPG)
Thassos in june of 1916
(http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/10/24/1414141392045_wps_27_Collect_picture_of_FDH_Br.jpg)
Thassos i n1916 FDH Brenmer "Bunnie" is holding the plane.
this pic shows surely the plane in 1915 (it's the 1262 or 1964)
It had to look therefore like the 1258:
I don't know yet how will I represent the plane.
I wanted to do an english plane in 1915 with the union Jack in the fuselage and red and white cockade, but the pics we have are all 1916 pics. Bremner arrive in late december of 1915...
One particularity of this plane is he had, has the 1962 had, inverted colors i the cockade, as french roundels were:

Great seat, Xan. This sounds like a great idea for a project. Looking forward to it.

The kit is the gavia (the only one I think at 1/48 scale)
It seems quite pretty and simple.
I have the part photoetched dedicate to this kit too:
I add the WWI seat part photoetched to reach the right seat...
Xan
-
It appears to be a fairly decent kit Xan, the PE parts will certainly add a lot of detail to the model, looking forward to following along with your build.
Des.

I started my scout:
hard work isn't it?
well I gess I could give more explication...
in the part photoetched, there is this:
honestly I don't like very much fusekage structure un photoetched , so I started to use it as model for a plastic one...
then I thought it was unnecessary, at the end nothing will be visible.
It was a shame because in the David and Rick blog there was all the detail:
then a remenber this Sodium beauty I saw last week in Lyon's exposition
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7629/16574979590_4d90ed6ba3_c.jpg)
So I will try to do a structure without fabric with a maximum of detail at the side of the Gavia kit ...
In the second day I find a way to complicate what had to be a relax mounting...

modeler at work...

Xan

Great project Xan!
-
Thanks Bo!
loocking pics I understand how silly I am ... I trusted in the photoetched structure who is absolutly wrong of course.....
next time I will take care of this plan
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2015/03/14//15031411521818634313070362.jpg)
and by the moment I will wait the dimensions I asked to David...
Xan
-
Simple project gone wild! I love it, Xan!
Cheers,
Bud

Hello gentlemen,
A very good choice for woman pilot, Xan (but, she's nearly 70 years old today...) ;D ;D
A new historic build, I like it !!!
Friendly.
Alain.
-
Wow, a frame model in 1/48 scale! I'll be watching this with great interest. Looking good so far!
George
-
You have made a very bold move Xan but one I will be taking a great interest in.
Des.

A very good choice for woman pilot, Xan (but, she's nearly 70 years old today...) ;D ;D
? ? ? ? ?
-
hey, Xan!
thank you for the info, by the way, the photoetched looks great to me....
the 'woman pilot' Alain is referring to, is the one in the picture you used to show the waved seat... you know... cherchez la femme! ;D
ciao
edo
-
ah! of course emmanuelle!
this has been the first big erotic movie in France in the 70ies. In the poster of the movie emanuelle was sitting in a big wicker seat and it became very famous and symbolic...
Xan

Hello My work stays in that:
I use those pieces again in a more clasical way:
however, David the grandson send me all the plan in PDF at 1/5 scale, based on original plans, amazing!
I will have quite work for a while to convert those plan from pdf to Jpeg, from 1/5 to 1/48at 1/48 ...
but the frame models still goes on, I don't think I will have so good documentation for a WWI aircraft until a while!
Xan
-
Fantastic that your Grandson sent you the excellent plans, this will make your job a lot easier.
Des.
-
Very great beginning Xan.
Martin
-
Outstanding start. The plans look great and should be a terrific help!
RAGIII

Hello friends!
the first plan, fuselage profil is ready at 1/48, with the good dimensions (in blue).
first observation, the fuselage is too short toward the tail, about 4,5mm.
Docteur frankenstein is preparing the tools!
but right now I will restart the fuselage frame building , this time with the good dimensions...
see you soon!
Xan
-
It's...It's...It's alive !!!!!!!!! ;D ;D
Friendly.
Alain.
-
So:
A the first frame I did
B the new one conform to the plans
C its representation i the model

Xan

Hello Xan,
that is brilliant work so far!!!
Lukas
-
Xan,
Incredible challenge you've taken on here, so far very impressive. Keep the updates coming, this is going to be fascinating as it progresses! 8)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Very nice work on the frame so far, looking forward to seeing more.
Des.
-
Very fine start, I will be watching this thread with great interest.
-
thanks to all!
David and théo were doing in 03/02/2013 what I'm doing now, but 48 times smaller...
Xan
-
Well frame is done;paralelism are not all perfects, but it will be enough to me ;)
I have now to fill it
(http://bristolscout.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/seat-in-fuselage-occupied1.jpg)
Theo, David and Rick's friend in advanced training...
Xan
-
The frame is looking great Xan! It's nice to have good reference photos to follow.
George
-
Outstanding work on the frame!
RAGIII
-
The completed frame looks really good, it will look even better once all the bracing wires are fitted.
Des.
-
Shaping up very nicely with the frame work :)
Terri
-
Exellent framework Xan.
Martin
-
Hi everybody!
my first brace (?) is done:
The idea that I have to do another 31make me quite scared...
I don't know if that way of representing the braces will be nearer from the real one that simple EZ line ...
...
Xan
-
Outstanding!
Cheers,
Bud
-
That is so cool. Watching with interest. :)
James
-
hello and thanks!
the brassing wire of the first two frame are done... so long to do!
on the next frame It will be the rudder bar's turn!
Xan
-
Looks great... worth the effort!
-
I'm not very happy with the result of the brassing wire, I will try another way, with tube...
between the second and third frame, that's wahat wa have:
and that is what David and Rick did:
well, let's go!
Xan
-
work is done (exept the compas)
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2015/03/23//15032312271018634313095869.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=15032312271018634313095869.jpg)
Xan
-
hello!
I went on a little bit.
I put the seat base and I will quicly start painting the wooden parts...
I did the same thing in the models but much more simplified (at the end, we will see nothing)
here is the frame with the seat:
I'm happpy because I founded a correct figurine to represent Donald Bremner !
The David et Rick grand dad was tall :
"the control column is in brass, and has an aluminium base which isn't like the one on the drawing. And Granddad extended it by about 75mm because he was 6ft 3in tall, and it was a very tight fight in the cockpit. In fact, of course, if you are being completely accurate, you should remove the cushion from the seat, since he had to take that out to get his knees under the instrument panel."
6 feet 3 inches, more than1,90m!
look at the picture:
I bought that figurine but didn't use it because it was oversized. It represent a 1,92m man, it will be perfect!
Donald told himself in his memories in crosses and cockades vol 5 n°4, talking about the french who were in thassos with the 2wing:
They chief pilot was a man called Constantini, who was a very famous racing motor driver and always used to call me "le grand pilote du petit bristol"
Xan
-
Finest work and great choice Xan.
Martin
-
Thanks Martin!
Well I started to pzint the frame.
gunze H318 radome for the first coat with airbrush and oil paint " raw sienna"
it will have to dry some days so meanwhile, I will take care of the model...
Xan

OUTSTANDING work on the frame! Looks stunning to say the least!
RAGIII

Some very fine detailed work being done here, well done.
Des.

Exceptional work, Xan! Looking forward to the next update.
Cheers,

You are doing great work on this Xan. A very ordinary Kit on the way to becoming a masterpiece, nicely done! 8)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Exellent framework and painting Xan.
Martin
-
Thanks to all!
talking abouit the compass which was between the pilot foots, I had the side plan as only reference, so I imagined that, a cone
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2015/03/29//15032910542418634313117667.jpg)
I asked David about information for the compass. He send me that draw which shows me I was absolutly wrong....
Iwill have to do it again...
Meanwhile , you remember the fuselage was too short according to the plan:
well, man at work:
when I finished and compare the two half fuselage, I saw their were not iqual...
I added some plastic card and now yes the model have the right size...
I will have to finish the work with surfacer, but I will wait for jointing the two half fuselage...
Xan

Great fixing Xan.
Very impressive work!
:)

Just catching up on your build, Xan. This is an amazing project.
Beautiful job on the frame and the extension of the fuselage! :D

I 'm going know to look for something better for the the brassing wires...
Xan

Your framework is getting better with each update! Looks great with the wood tones and seat!
RAGIII

Excellent work on the fuselage extension, and the frame is looking awesome.
Des.
-
Great progress, Xan. I like your modelling very much.
-
It looks better and better Xan.
Martin
-
thank you!
Today I tried to do thinner brass wires, using micro tube (?).
we can compare with the photoetched done brassing wires forward
It's not perfect but it's better isn'it?
Xan
-
Wounderful Xan.
Martin
-
Beautiful work Xan, especially that second photo. Your figure needs work however, I think you got the blue wrong on the uniform, and the shading on him is wrong. ;) ;) ;) ;)
Warren
-
i thought your morane type L was impressive, this is even better.great attention to detail.
-
Thank you,
Warren , out of the clasroom!
I get a little but forward with a second brassing wire done. I need to do some to appreciate if it is the good way or not...
I tried to represent the brackets (?), but I will find something better...
I have to look at my photoetched stock...
Xan

Very good Xan.

Under primer , those rib tapes look pretty damn good :) Is this a decal ? or is something on the lines of thin tape ?
Terri
-
Xan,
Beautiful work as usual. Your builds are always a pleasure to watch. Now, a question:
- Was the kit designed to have the lower wings fit flush against the fuselage? If so, will you have to move the strut attachment points to compensate for moving them both out?
Just curious.
Warren

Under primer , those rib tapes look pretty damn good :) Is this a decal ? or is something on the lines of thin tape ?
!yes it is. Decals in archer style. but after you put it, you have to take of a film. only the decal stays.
look the result

- Was the kit designed to have the lower wings fit flush against the fuselage? If so, will you have to move the strut attachment points to compensate for moving them both out?
Yes it was. they were two plastic attachment poits I take them off and remplac them by metal attachment...
Xan
-
yes i have this kit they address the space but with small plastic attachment it will break off i did just like xan. those rib tapes look great, really dress up the wings.
-
Nice work on the lower wing attachment! I also like the rib tapes, they look great! I have some Archer tapes in 1/32nd but it looks to me as though I will need at least two sets to do one aircraft. Gets fairly costly.
RAGIII
-
Truly brilliant work, Xan! The rib tapes look fantastic. I used those on my 1/48 Tripe. A lot of work, but well worth it.
Cheers,

Hello !
new update...
I did the engine , a Gnome Lambda 7 cylinders.
in fact, the 1264 have used two engines: Donald change the Gnome for a Le Rhone 9c, more powerful.
i did a gap in the engine ring (?)
It was evidentely to let the oil escape, but all the scout had not this gap:
in the fuselage I did the foot rest, and put the seam (archer), and some photoetched:
and with a little bit of surfacer:
I have to detail the tank, and some other details and we can soon start painting...

Very beautiful Xan.
Martin

Extremely well done all around! Your conversion work on the fuselage, the mounting of the wings, and especially the figure are all outstanding!
RAGIII

Hello everybody!
I'm (slowly) going on...
for the model:
it's not time for peint yet...
I forgoten the ring attachments, and detailed the fuel tank with archer.
for the fuselage:
and sir Donald is going on too!
it's not ended at all and I have to restart the face...
Xan
-
Fantastic update, Xan! I really love the detail you've added around the fuel tank and cowling. The bare framed fuselage is really shaping up beautifully and Sir Donald is looking the business.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Very nice work Xan, you are doing wonders with this kit. Great detail additions and great overall results, looking forward to more, especially the colour.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Excellent work and very good painting, Xan.
Martin
-
Very nice update, Xan. Your Scout is coming along beautifully! I just received an order of the Archer rivets. How do you like using them? Is there anything special I need to know, or are they like regular decals?
George
-
I think it's better put them upon surfacer and not directly upon the plastic.
you will have to take care , they are quite delicate. when they are dry, protect them with a new surfacer coat
-
Thanks, Xan

Hello!
before painting I had a few things to do:
put the attachment:
it's russian "gonza" photoetched for the attachments and part "bristol scout" photoetched for the turnbuckles.
same thing on the upper side:
then I started to paint, using a mix of seal colour and white...
I did'nt like to much the result: too much stone color, too cold.
however I forgot some elements so it was not a problem:
the wooden little stick along the fuselage and a little cyano to make volume in the turnbuckles:
the joystick end who appears under the fuselage:
then I repainted with radome color mixed with white:
in this pic you can compare the two colors in the wings:
here is what the David and mike granddad reproduction actually look like:
the wing is very transparent , much more than the old pics shows
(http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/10/24/1414141392045_wps_27_Collect_picture_of_FDH_Br.jpg)
anyway I want to try a transparency effect under the wings...
I used "earth" paint, and overspray ith the same base mix. Well the result is not perfect , but the work is not ended, there are two different color coat to be add.
than I passed a new coat with radome pure, particulary toward the trailing edges:
I have to add a sand brown coat, now.
in the upper side I will repaint the ribs in a very light color:
(this is my 1264)
Xan
-
Great detailing and painting, Xan!
-
Nearly like the original plane.
Martin
-
Nice effect so far Xan ;)
Terri
-
thanks friends!
I passed the third coat with gunze H66 sandy brown:
I wanted to do a light colour for the fabric but this pics shows me a lot of contrast...
next step, a very lighr colour for the ribs renforcements...
Xan

The next wounderful step.

Hello!
I return to the model. particuraly to the metalic part of the frame...
quite hard to decide how paint it...
This pic shows the 1264 or the 1262 un summer of 1915 before Bunnie came to greece
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2015/06/02//15060212111218634313322480.jpg)
metal parts seems to be paint .
I thought about the battleshhip grey, but this appears officialy in 1916...
in the 3032 lateral part seems to be paint but the cowl seems to be natural metal color .
in this 1264 picture, the cowl can be metal color..
I decided finaly to do as the Bremner brothers did
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/p180x540/10511140_413522778831149_6987328860242030351_n.jpg?oh=c93c9d36315dcbe005a9c11f7fe64a9a&oe=55C4200C&__gda__=1443010108_d0ab09f7bc409ddaa3c750160fdeb1be)
so here are the pics :
The wheels are done too :
you will notice that the tire were black in those scouts...

Hello there!
back to the frame, I did the horizontal stabiliser:
after comparaison with the replica, I saw the real one was smaller than the one I did :
the real one had the smaller size tail too:
I did mine according to the plans David gave me :'(...
anyway my model have the big size too, so I will let it as it is...
Back to the model:
when the union Jack diseapears for the roundel, they painted the flag, and we can see it on the 1262 and 1266 scouts pics:
An other thing: those plane had the oil tank head on the pilote . With the plane vibration and the rotative engine, the frame 's fabric was very dirty, as you can see in the two pics above.
So I try to represent it:
that's all folks!
Xan

it'a now done!

Very nice oil staining , what did you use ?
Terri
I agree with Terri! The staining looks terrific! Beautiful work all around!
RAGIII
-
hello friends!
Terry and rag, I used AK interactive's aircraft engine oil, dilueted with white spirit passed with the airbrush.
I did the same effect in the Morane Saulnier Parasol:
well about the frame:
I did the control stick.
this part is very important because it is one of the three Donald kept from the 1264. It's now serving again in the David's replica.
the RNSA control stick were in brass while the RFC control stick were in aluminium.
here it is:
all the command are linked to the control surfaces. It is thez first time I did that and it's quite funny:
the gear strut renforcement:
Then I did the engine.
Small stuff models do marvelous WWI engine at 1/48.
the 1264 has two different engine. first a Gnome 7cylinder Lambda 80hp and later a Le Rhone 9 cylinder 80hp.
I wanted to represent the gnome as I did in the model.
small stuff model don't do the lambda , but I they did for me a mixing with the omega carter (7cylinder) and delta cylinders wich were biggers than the omega's ones...
look at the beauty of details:

and here is the result:
I'm working on the fuel tank too:

and here is the engine in its place:

Great work on Small Stuff stuff. I have built a 1/72 version of their fantastic model engines, so I think I can truly congratulate you on what you achieved. These bits are not easy to put together but when done so, they result in a fantastic pieces, like yours!

Wow...such a details in 48 makes me wonder how marvellous result will be achieved at the end!!

Hello everybdy!
summer is not a good time for modeling because it's a good time for su much things!
anyway here is my last update:
back to the model.
I did the roundels.
we are in november of 15. until summer 1915, british planes had a white and red roundels or union jacks as national identification. this last one seems to look too much like german crosses...
so three colors roundels were adoted.
in the begining the order was not quite definited so the 1264 had inversed colors...

then, I wathered them.

after that I wanted to put the serials decals but I saw they were too much big.

the aera had too much wires to apply a stencil, so I decided to use the mask method:

I will perhaps do again the left side but the result convinced me...
oh and last but not least, the modern 1264 flies!!!!
