Probably a bad idea to start a second build since I have a DrI underway but what the heck:

Box is crammed full of plastic and other goodness:

Waiting for this build.

I really am interested to see what you do with this one. I'll be watching closely :D
Keith
-
For some reason I have been super excited to get started on this one - gonna dive right in tonight. Just need to decide which scheme - the shark-face version is most enticing but I imagine that is going to be the most chosen subject so maybe I will do one of the others.
-
I'm looking forward to seeing you build this kit Petrov, it will be very interesting to see how good the kit is.
Des.
-
I am also looking forward to following your build, Petrov. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Well Petrov, I am certainly looking forward to your build. Perhaps the first on the net :D
RAGIII

plastic has been cut from sprues - no turning around now :)
-
nothing too exciting yet - just removing parts from sprues, test fitting and cleaning up.

It's looking pretty exciting so far, parts seem well detailed, nice seat :)
Des.
-
The seat looks very impressive, even without any updates or improvements.
I will be watching this (for sure very challenging) build very closely and (if i may) will bombard you with a lot of questions.
Sorry in advance 8)

Hurry up and build, hurry up and build :D Can't wait to see how it looks all built up.
-
Absolutely, petrov...you'll have a very attentive following on this one...bit more than usual.... and that's pretty funny, Bo.
-
Hello gentlemen,
Mmm, let's get things started !!!
I want it (heu...in fact, I want all WnW models... ;D).
Best regards.
Alain.
-
Now I finally have the references I've been waiting for for my Merlin 1:72 AEG - thanks WNW!. I'll be watching this build to see how it should look!
Ian
-
That it is Ian.
Need the instructions for the Hi-Tech and Sierra scale Vacu kits.
Wait also for the new Special Windsock File.
Martin

I'm looking forward to this, Petrov. The plastic certainly looks like it was worth the wait...

Not a whole lot of time tonight for model work but I have all of the interior "green" parts off the sprues and cleaned up ready for paint.
Did a mock up of the interior cell and it looks to fit together real nice. Watch out for the note on the instrument panel - there are several instruments on there that need to be carved off - its in the instructions but I had missed the note till I went back and reviewed things.
My pup was very interested in the AEG work tonight as well - not much help though :)

Well, in any event, he/she is quite the handsome little beast, petrov...got to be some moral support if nothing else then, eh?
-

Yes, I noticed that and found it very interesting - I wonder if the sole survivor had / has those installed?
That's what I had assumed...
-
I might need to sell a few in the stash or a kidney and get one of these. I so like the AEG.
Like everyone else, definitely watching with popcorn in hand.

My Pup won't be much help either because I need to finish it before I can start on the AEG.....and yours is far cuter than mine, Petrov:
(http://i1371.photobucket.com/albums/ag293/michaelscarborough1/JAAS%20Sopwith%20Pup/IMG_01622_zpsnjzw5lqa.jpg) (http://s1371.photobucket.com/user/michaelscarborough1/media/JAAS%20Sopwith%20Pup/IMG_01622_zpsnjzw5lqa.jpg.html)
BTW, my AEG has arrived and I will have the official opening ceremony at 5:00 this evening.....
-
Two coats of grey-green on the interior bits - took quite a lot of paint:
Jumping around a bit - the wing is a good size - not crazy big but still impressive
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/petrov27/photo208_zpspw08qa5m.jpg)
-
Some pretty large ejector pin marks in the rear fuselage to deal with - not a big deal and frankly you could probably just paint over and put the interior lozenge and they would not be hardly visible through the gunners trap door or the tail skid opening but I am going to fill and sand them out.
not the best pic but you get the idea....
-
Nice to see some colour going on Petrov, the ejector pin marks are in a position that will not be seen, good forward thinking by Wingnuts.
Des.

Nice painting Petrov.

I would like to see a comparison to the Junkers J 1 wing, the J1 always seemed large to me....curious to see them together
-
Well, I have been proceeding with this just not taking many pics...
Assembled the wings and shot primer and the dark blue over them:

Hello gentlemen,
Well paint interior. Congratulations. :D

Interior is done. My dashboard levers ended up being rather over scale but I decided to just leave as-is....

Brilliant work on the innards, Petrov! I think the levers look fantastic.

Lovely! That looks just great, Petrov...
Even nicer for me since it helps me see the geometry for my 72nd interior so THANKS!

Thanks all for the comments as always!
Slow progress - interior lozenge applied, some basic internal rigging and the gun for the underside hatch completed from the kit gun body with a Master brass barrel. That handle thing on the top of the master barrel was a real treat to fold and attach - first attempt failed and ruined the part so had to borrow from a second set unfortunately....
Next step is to close up the fuselage halves....

Lovely work on the machine gun, those tiny PE bits can be a bit fiddly at times, the lozenge application looks really good.
Des.
-
Good update.
Martin

When I grow up into a big, strong and skille dman, I want to be able to paint guns like you :)
Bets regards,
Sasho
-
Thanks again for the interest!
Some progress - doesn't look like much but it feels like it has taken significant effort to get to this point of having the fuselage halves closed up. Some putty and sanding has been required along the turtledeck seam and on the front but not too bad. I prepped the tail empennage surfaces as well but managed to ruin the paint when glossing for lozenge - tried the Tamiya spray gloss and wow that stuff is hot - really reacted badly with the acrylic paint. Getting a good gloss remains a challenge for me I guess :)
Also have decided to do the scheme for "white #2" though with the early version crosses from scheme white #1 instead of the later field modified (I figure it is safe to believe that #2 was delivered with those same crosses as #1 as they were the same production batch and close in airframe number)

Very nice, Petrov! Your interior looks great. This looks like a fun one to build. I can't wait to start mine.

Fuselage and lower wing all lozenged now. Entire fuse is covered with decals - biggest decal job I have ever done and the most difficult getting them to settle down over the top coaming and nose. Lots of things not really satisfied with but ah well. Still some more touch ups to do....
The worst is that after all the lozenge, I applied the other markings which went fine till the serial numbers - they silvered terribly... All the other decals went on fine so not sure what happened there. I have some extra lozenge so I may just apply a section over the serial numbers to cover them up - not sure what else to do :P

Looks terrific! The Lozenge is outstanding. I can't seem to see the silvering on your serial numbers but I am sure there is a method to help with the silvering after application. I just can't think of what it is at this time :-\
RAGIII
-
Looks fantastic Petrov,
Really lovely to see the kit supplied lozenge on the model.
I am going to use the Aviattic lozenge on my build so it will make a good contrast to see models built with different interpretations of the night lozenge fabric.
Reference your silvering problem.
You may be able to tease off the existing serials by using decal softener or just plain water and a paintbrush?
The technique may be very slow, but I have managed to do this successfully in the past.
To prevent silvering of serials, I always apply them by using some wet future applied with a paintbrush on the area the decal has to be applied to. You have to be very careful though to carefully blot out the excess underneath otherwise you can end up with wrinkles in the overlying decal. Let it dry naturally, and there should be no silvering at all underneath.
If you need spare serials, drop me a message and you can have mine , as I won't be using the same decals for my kit.
Good luck and best wishes with the rest of the build!
Dave :)
PS- does anyone have any idea why there is a raised C- section ridge in the area above the fuel tank, on the lower centre section wing? I can see no purpose for this, and wondered whether there was supposed to be some other part for this area? Cannot see why.
-
Hi Petrov!!!
That looks absolutely magnificent to behold... that fuselage is simly stunning!!!
Cheerio
Lukas
-
Absolutely stunning Petrov, the decals look fantastic and as far as the silvering, I can't see it in the photos, you are doing a brilliant job.
Des.
-
It is looking absolutely fantastic! I know that everyone said the same thing, but it is damn
true, so one more time is not too much.
Best reagrds,
Sasho
-
If you dare: my cure for silvering is to carefully prick any bubbles with a needle, then Mr Color Lacquer Thinner applied directly to the offending decal with a brush, no scrubbing, just a thin coat then do not touch it. Let it sit 24 hrs. Repeat as necessary. Coat with several coats of Tamiya clear.
-
It looks exellent.
Martin
-
Thanks gents for the postive feedback! Really helps to keep the motivation (it was super hard to stay focused during all that lozenge application)
Regarding the silvered decals, I actually had tried fixing it via pin-pricks and future application prior to posting the pics here but it did not seem to help much and now the decals are pretty much fused to the lozenge now :-\
The silvering in the pics is not noticable but I intentionally shot them at an angle where it wasnt apparent - it is really noticeable at higher angles....
Debating if I should try to remove that area of lozenge where the serial # is or just apply another piece of lozenge right over the top - seems both could screw it up further....
Dave - regarding the raised "C" on the wing center section - I think that is to just lock the wing into the fuselage maybe? There is a corresponding hole on the fuse where it slots together?
-
well slowly some progress. Bombs are lashed to the racks with sections of Modelkasten line. Decided to do this section as a module prior to attaching to the fuselage - not sure that was the best idea as it was quite tricky getting it attached to the fuselage without breaking anything.
-
And here is the lower center section attached to fuselage. Wow the pics show up lots of rough spots but ah well! I dont think I would choose to decal the front gunner's section if I were to do another - so hard to get those to conform correctly around the very front of the nose....

Superb work, Petrov! I think you have done a terrific job
of the lozenge as well as the bombs and undercarriage.
Looking forward to the next updates, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
again thank you for the positive feedback! Hoping things will proceed a little quicker now but still tons of work to do!
-
Great work as fo far Petrov i like this airplane
-
Just back on the bench here - touching up some chips and applying clear to the decal repaired center section of the top wing then I have to get going on the engines....
Did you use the Taurus timing gear with lifters on your build? I simply could not get it all to line up and it ended up being a major factor why this went to the "shelf of doom" for many months :)
-
Wow - nice engine assembly line there!
I think I might have had the early Taurus set(s) - maybe I will order a couple new ones and start over
Which of their plug set do you favor for the DIV?
-
a dunk in very hot water will cure any banana issues with camshafts -- do this while still on the casting block...
-
Beautifully done Petrov!
She's going to be a beast! Love the lozenge...
Guy

Fantastic job on this kit.

The details on the engine look fantastic. Especially considering they are mostly covered!
