Title: Pfalz DIIIa
Post by: bobs_buckles on February 27, 2015, 08:41:42 PM
Work in progress.  ;)

Just cleaning and dry fitting at the mo. Not sure of livery just yet, but thinking along the lines of a Jasta 30 bird or a full on Zebra job.

More to come.
Cheers,

Von B

Yes, a JaSta 30 bird would be nice. No surprise with Pheon's decal sheet available, though.  8)

Watching in rapt anticipation, von Pfalzmiester! I just took delivery of another of these a week ago, however the "flavour of the week" for me is Jasta 18 at this point.

I'm looking forward to watching you do your Pfalz magic on another one of these, Bob!  Jasta 30 gets my vote.  Have you seen Ronny Bar's rendition of Bethge's 5888/17 in Kowalski's "Pfalz-Fighter Aircraft"?  He depicts it with the early style bottom wing.  Looks really cool.  That's the one I plan on building.  Rowan's decals would require a little modification to do this one, but I think it would be fun.  I'd love to see you tackle that scheme.
Cheers,
Bud

Bob,
I am with the others in that I am looking forward to seeing you do another Pfalz as your previous builds were gorgeous! I have one WNW and one Roden to do in the near future so following another build will be helpful!

Hi gang
Thanks for looking in!  :)
Updates will be sporadic due to twisting wire, cutting tube, cutting vinyl, living life, paying bills, riding motorbike, keeping the other half happy, failing at keeping the other half happy  ;D

Hi Bud,

I've not seen Ronny Bar's rendition of Bethge's 5888/17. But the early wing version sounds cool. Need to find said image  8)

Well, one does own a vinyl cutter, so I may as well use it!

I'm going to attempt Mr HÖhn's bird. It will either be a roaring success or a total car crash!

Actually, WNW includes a Teddy bear in their generic German Accessories sprue G.

Looks good, Bob. Always liked that scheme, but the masking held me back. Looking forward to watching your progress. I'm still plodding along with my Jasta 30 Pfalz; hope to have it done soon!

Masking wouldn't be too bad if you painted the red first, masked with stripes with tape, then sprayed the silberglau.

That's the way Garry from 'Hannants London' suggested I tackle the red ribbons - great minds think alike!  ;)

Hope I can do the old girl justice  8)

Things are moving soooooooo slo0000000owly with this build.

I doubt I will be doing the red ribboned wonder I mentioned previously.  :-[ Not enough hours in the day to do it justice.

Anyway. Micro update  :)
Removed plastic tyre from hubs. Replaced with Robson's Rubber Rings

Drilling into the plastic tyre created a nice little freebie. Thin twirly strands of plastic that can be used for cabling, ignition leads and cockpit details. I love this hobby!  8)

See you in six months for the next microcosmic update  ;D

As long as they don't take you away - or don't let you bring the kit with you to the asylum - your state of mind shouldn't matter much!  :P Nice work on the wheels and tyres, I'll have to hear that little trick in mind.

One of the two airworthy Pfalzi in NZ has a variation on the Hohn scheme, sadly sans bear:

Hi James,
Any good tobacconist will carry the papers you need.

You can do leather like me!
I used Vallejo Leather as a base coat. A couple of layers of Citadel sepia washes, followed by dry brushing (dry - as in DRY!) a couple of flesh tones. Two more washes, highlight the buttons and polish back those washes with a Qtip/cotton bud ...Job done! See, it's not that hard, James! Give it a go  ;)

Not to insult your intelligence, but here is a weeeeeee update and any update from me is a blessing, so there!

I could of gone with a replacement brass hub - couldn't be assed! I took the simple route of drilling plastic hub, drilling small hole through wall of said drilled plastic hub, installed cotter pin from thin plastic rod, touch of Tamiya extra thin evil and Bob's your Father's brother.
At this rate I should be finished my Christmas! Christmas 2030!!

With regard to this thread or anyone who has built or will be modelling the DIII or DIIIa, I wonder if anyone has considered modifying the upper-and lower wingtips to their correct appearance regarding 'taper' on same. Full details on this subject in my thread in the archives. Or are people accepting manufacturers 'version' of this?.

Hi Al,
I can't be arsed correcting the washout on the wings, getting the thing complete and in the case is good enough for me!

Cheers,
BVB  ;)

I also chose not to correct the geometry. I thought about it for a Nano Second but decided the odds were I would screw up a beautiful wing and throw the kit away  ::)

Same here.  Maybe if I were in my early 40's and had the time to build one model per year and I intended to build only one Pfalz D.IIIa, then I'd MAYBE give it a try, but as it is, I have two Eduard D.III's, two Eduard D.IIIa's and a WNW D.IIIa, all of which I intend to build in this lifetime.
Cheers,
Bud

I'm back in the saddle with this build.

New Mancave brings new opportunities.

Yes, indeed. New opportunities (to show off the mancave) to restart the Pfalz. Keep on going!

I'll echo the other's sentiments, it's great to see the Bucklebench back in operation! Things look far better with that Panzer Reference properly out of the cave! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

Nice to see the resume of the work here, Von Bob, I repeat what others said better than me!

BTW I really love the slightly yellowish tone of the tyres, which color (or mix) did you use?

Ciao

Thank you, my loyal band of Pfalz-Nuts  :D

AnDonio, I think the yellow tone is down to the white balance (or lack of!) within my basic camera.

Cheers,
BVB

P.S. This build will be my way of slipping back into some kind of plastic tickling groove. The cockpit and engine will be regulation OOTB standard, but effort will be made on the overall paintjob. Above all I'm gonna have me some FUN! No Fear - Just FUN!!!!

I was happy to see the new-postings icon on this thread, Bob.  I had missed a few steps while away from the forums; it all looks great.

Looking forward to more,

Chris
