Title: model suitable for 9 year old
Post by: Jim on February 13, 2015, 08:01:29 PM
Have a nephew who loves planes (as well as helos) and wants a model for his birthday in late Feb, so was looking for an age appropriate kit for him (not necessarily ww1). Noticed that Airfix offer a 'quick build' range of models, though was worried that these might be too simple for him since they are rated for 5 and up...any ideas as to other kits that might be suitable?

Thanks in advance

Jim

The Pegasus snap models are quite nice and rather inexpensive.  Even experienced modelers have turned them into nice display models, but kids can easily build them. WWII: Spit, 'cane, 109E, 109G, FW 190A, ME 262 and P-51D, I believe.

The old Monogram 1/48 line (now Revell) would be another option.  A bit more detailed and advanced, but still relatively easy.  Good luck and enjoy!

Regards,

Bob

Zvezda's snap fit (or whatever they are called) are very very good models. The fit is perfect, builds very easily and if you put a little modelling skills, they are becoming stars, BUT they are tanks :(
Otherwise I can't recomend them enough, especially the new releases.

I think Revell do a type of easy "snap" pre painted kit.

Airfix quick build models are compatible with Lego I believe.  Airfix also do "starter" sets, usually in 1:72, some with small paint pots, brushes and glue.

It really depends what your nephew wants to do - if he's wanting a toy he builds himself (that may generate an interest in modelling) then the lego-ish Airfix quick build may be OK.  But if he is wanting to actually glue and paint plastic, then the Airfix starter set may be ideal?

Both Revell and Airfix have many 1:72 cheap-ish standard sets, that don't come with glue or paint.  As far as I can remember they both have a "skill level" (Revell certainly does) labelled on the box...

Thanks all - I think I will stay with the "snap together" pre-painted type kits to save his mother unnecessary angst...he is nine, after all!

Zvezda has a nice line of snap-tite kits of aircraft from Planes movie. I built one with my son and can strongly recommend them - great fit, fine plastic, colours are ready and have dry decals.
