As I had announced I would like to share with you my WIP of an Eduard Spad XIII in scale 1:48.
The goal is a model in the colors of the 94th Aero Squadron in Koblenz 1919 after the armistice. In addition, an Hucks Starter and some figures will be arranged together on a small diorama.
I used the Eduard Spad XIII Dual Combo, Kit No. 1142.

A helpfull review you will find with the next link of my friend Jean Luc Formery.

The details are fantastic and very fine. It makes a great joy to build this well thought out kit. At least until now... :)
The wooden structure is painted with oil colours. Meanwhile, a well-known technique and used by many modellers.

For a variety, in the meantime I've started with the conversion of the Ford Model T Ambulance. With the introduction of that kit by RPM I bought both versions. 10 Euro per kit was very tempting. ;)

Because the chassis is too short (I compared the vehicles of the Shuttleworth Collection) it was extended about 2 cm.

You have done a great job so far with your Huck starter conversion, I did the same thing but in 1:32 scale using an old Pyro kit of a Model T pie wagon, here is the link if you are interested, may give you a few ideas but from what you have already done you don't need any help :)

Hi Des,
your Huck Starter looks absolutely great. The whole model have so many nice details. And the chain is mind blowing. In scale 48 I couldn`t find no proper chain. And many details clearly visible at your model are not reproducible too. That`s very sad! :-[
Some of your Walkaround pictures I`ve never seen before! Many thanks for sharing your Topic with me.
Things are going well and the basic paintjob is mostly done.
Here are some pictures of the real one I`ve selected as a painting guide.

Meanwhile, I have finished the Huck Starter, converted from the RPM model.
The pictures turned out not so good, so I'm going to do better next time!
The RPM kit has really nice details, so I can highly recommend it.

After more than 2 years I`ve paused this built, I found several weeks ago my way to restart my Spad XIII model. In this case pls let me say: " Excuse me for my delay."
Maybe you know that, you can`t find no more patience and/ or strength to be steady with your project. All the masking, demasking and masking again, was killing my patience two years ago.
For now I can say it goes straight forward.
The entire model is for now in gloss varnish finished and is waiting for painting with Alclad "Light Sheen". Meanwhile I`ve started the rigging with 0.12mm thread.
I`m not sure what colour I`ll be choosing for the rigging. Gunmetal or Darkgrey?
I`m a bit afraid if I`m forward looking to glueing the upper wing on to the lower wings with all of those fragile struts!

I've missed this until just now as well. Your "checkerboard" finish is spectacular and the weathering superb. This will be a stunning model when completed.............. keep those reports coming! 8)

I too am so pleased that you have come back to this project which you set aside for very understandable reasons. The chequers on that are super - made my eyes go funny just to look at them, so how you managed to paint them I simply cannot imagine. Really looking forward to seeing this completed.

I had somehow forgotten about this build :-\ The checkered scheme has turned out Spectacularly! The wood struts are also awesome! Great start on the rigging. I am glad you have brought this one back into the spotlight!

I missed this the first time around, but my oh my! She's a looker! I love your weathering and exhaust staining, it's perfectly restrained to my eyes.

very nice looking spad in everyway, i like the subltle weathering and accents to make a realistic looking model.

Mate this is the most spectacular finish on Spad XIII I`ve ever seen!
Congrats on the paint job! Sweet build - I`m glad that I could see it.
-
yes! i can only echo what the others have already said: the spad is really awsome and the modified ambilance is stunning!
the kit, in my opinion, is alredy a very good one but you tourned it into a masterpiece!
can't wait to see it finished

So good to see this one back on the bench, it deserves to be finished!

How beautiful it is!
The truck and especially the plane. We rarely see so beautiful.

Many thx to everybody which answered so nicely. Thank you all.
In the meantime, I could finishing the construction/painting of my Checker-Spad. Some points of the last construction steps I would like to explain.
At first I `ll point out the assembling of the cabane struts. In my case the parts D14 were too long. so it was necessary to cut them to the propper length.
Second, all connection points for the wingstruts have to be drilled out deeper, otherwise the struts didn`t connect well.
Third and last point, the rigging.
I`ve used nylon threads and for the inner wing struts 8 short rubber threads in length. I would tell something about this rubber threads, as I`ve made in the last 20 years my own expieriences. It is of course a nice material, easy to attach and without any doubt a fast task. But as always, no sunny side without shade.
I was using this rubber thread in the past ( meanwhile it is a firm component to some internet shops) extensively with my models. For exsamble I`ve attached this rubber thread with my Heinkel He 51 floatplane in 2005.
http://www.hsgalleries.com/gallery04/he51b2dh_1.htm
After 12 years, about 70 % of the rubber rigging has gone. Why? the plasticisers for rubber disappears with the years. ( my models are not exposed to the sun ) As all rubber threads are on tension attached and of small diameter, they dissolve without any contact.
Meanwhile I`m using this rubber threads seldom and always with that damn queasy feeling in my stomach. Anyway, I can repair my old moddels with that rubber for the next 12 years. ;D

Dirk,
That is just plain spectacular, replicating this scheme has to be at the top end of the modelling scale of difficulty, and you've done it extremely well, and in 1:48 Scale as well! Just great modelling in all regards; finish, detail, rigging, and weathering all to a remarkably high standard.
Congratulations on a very fine model, it's in the top three I've seen on this Forum! 8) 8) 8)
Cheers,
Lance
PS
Can you tell us what type / brand of elastic thread you are referring to??

Wow, it's a beauty Dirk!

Antonio

Can you tell us what type / brand of elastic thread you are referring to??
Hi Lance
It is used for sockets, doll clothes, necklaces etc. It is available in black and white colours and the thinnest one has 0.15mm up to 0.5mm, aproximately 8m for 2 or 3 Euro. My wife purchased it in a small shop for sewing supplies in our hometown. The rubber thread from my wife is stored in talc to obtain the elasticity.
She can“t say what`s the name of the brand.
Anyway, what I wants to tell you, is about the fact that rubber has not a long lifetime, if not treated with talc or anything else.
-
Thank you Dirk. I sometimes wonder what the "life" of the After Market Model types like Modelkasten and EZ Line are........
Cheers,
Lance
-
Wow Dirk, outstanding work on this model.

Yours checker Spad looks amazing.
