Well here it is Des as you can see I've now attached the wings although I really should have started the rigging process before attaching them. Gregory I've also taken your advise you gave on the other forum re not being afraid to experiment with shading etc so I've made an attempt at doing this on the wings and tail section. I'm not really convinced I've done an overly great job of the process but I'll let you guys be the judge of that?
Still alot of small jobs to do but I'll keep this thread updated. For now though I'm going to shelve it for a few weeks while I finish my big 1/16th scale Trumpeter king tiger for a Model Competition coming up in the next few weeks.

heres a couple more from different angles. Sorry for the small pics but until Photobucket wants to work for me the pics will have to be small besides I'm not the worlds best photographer!

Thanks Sean for posting your Gotha, and like I said before, it looks superb, your shading is excellent and your attention to detail is spot on, this is going to be a special looking model.

Thankyou very much guys I'm really enjoying the build and am looking forward to getting back to it soon.

White spirits and Winsor & Newton oil paints. Just made up a very watery wash in this case using Vandyke Brown and applied it with a fine brush into any joins, capilary action takes care of the rest, I normally use a hair drier to speed the drying process. After it's dried I dab an ear bud into clean white spirits and wipe off any excess I don't want on the model.
I wouldnt recommend trying this process over Enamel type paints I always use acrylics for painting on both my Armour and Aircraft subjects as the wash won't effect the acrylic paint. I should also mention I always apply a clear floor polish coat over the entire surface of the painted model before applying a wash this gives the surface a very hard workable surface to touch without running the risk of fingers rubbing paint off. The floor polish coat will protect the under lying paint coat but will still react with an enamel coat if applied. Hope this helps?

Grand work Sean and thanks very much for your technique on doing the wash. Great stuff thats a keeper. :)

As I've just made a feeble attempt at rib shading, I'm drawn to your excellent results. Well done! That's exactly what I envisioned for my shading but . . . sigh . . . oh well.
With such a wide wingspan, do you anticipate any flexing in the wings, and if so, do you think that it will create any issues with maintaining taut rigging?
Cheers,
Chris

Outstanding job all around, Sean. Your shading is especially pleasing. I'm looking forward to seeing her all rigged.

Chris in answer to your question I was following a WNW Gotha G.IV build over on Amourama some time back where he got to the point in his build where he begun rigging his model. He was explaining then that it's best to rig the wings if not using an elastic type line like Ez line while the model isn't resting on it's wings or upside down as it will effect the rigging taughtness!
I will find the Build thread and post a link here for all to read.

Hi Dean Thankyou this is my second WW1 model a WNW Albatross DVa being my first build and to be perfectly honest I've only every built perhaps a handfull of WW2 aircraft models in my 30 odd years modeling so don't be scared to make a start on it !
The kit is very builder friendly and everything goes together without any fuss. Up until I was ready to fit the upper wings and struts I was really sweating over the whole process but studying the Instructions and taking my time proved no problems what so ever. Rigging might be another story but I'm going to follow Des advise from his website on materials and process and I'm sure all will go well.

Thank you Sean for the encouragement! I am impressed with this being your 2nd WW I Aeroplane! I am working on the Eduard Weekend Fokker Eindecker currently.... taking my time and not rushing anything... Maybe after the Eindecker I will decided to venture into the Gotha, i figure i can always just put it back in the box if it starts to concern me about how well i am doing... ::)
Thanks again and keep up the great Work on the Gotha (my favorite, No.#1 WW I Aeroplane) !!

Hi all Some more progress made this weekend. I've managed to rig the fuselage and tail surfaces. This is a first time effert using this process for rigging and I'm more tham happy with the way it's turning out so far although I probably could have used a slightly thicker Diameter line your thoughts? also many thanks to Des website and constant Emails to Des for advise!
Sean

Heres a few more photos.
Sean

Excellent work on the rigging so far, in my eyes the size looks good, it is in proportion with the scale of the model, well done.
Des.

The big beastie is shaping up well Sean (and your photo's are fine, they show a lot of detail)
Andrew

Thanks Andrew ;D and thanks for your thoughts Des I appreciate it !
Sean

A really nice start on the rigging Sean, as Des has already said it looks in scale with the model.
Best Regards
Keith

Cheers Keith! ;D

Good work there, I'm tempted to make an Austrian one with Hiero engines. In 1:72 though, not 1:48.
Regards :)

Excellent start to the rigging, Sean. As Des said, it looks to scale.

DEAN Looking forward to seeing you make a start mate! I'm finding the rigging easy going Just taking my time! Managed to get all the rigging within the parameter of the inner engine nacelles completed tonight , I'll update with more pics tommorrow.
PAUL Thanks for the compliment mate ! Coming from you I'm chuffed! I'm going to bring it to the Adelaide Comp this year...won't do any good with it with the likes of builders like yourself but what the heck it'll look impressive on the table all the same!
I'm working towards getting the thing completed for the NSW Scale Model Comp held at Woolongong next W/end.

I think I'd find that very challenging as up to now, I've always rested the model's wings on a couple of sponges while doing the rigging just so I can flip it back and forth to ease the task a bit. I always use monofilament, so that should be okay, but the thoughts of trying to rig a model with such a long wingspan when she's standing on her legs gives me the willies. It calls for considerably more dexterity than I have.
Cheers,
Chris

Well the rigging is completed so I'm on the home run to have this build finished for next weekend! I'll try and get some pics posted either tonight if not tommorrow night . Now it's onto the guns and ordinance then shes finished Next challange after that is to pack the thing for the 1000km trip to the show without damaging it during the trip!
