Hello,
lately I have lost my modelling mojo a bit, thanks to the 2 wonderfull Roden kits I'm strugling with. In order to get it back and inspired by the few absolutely stunning Salmson build, that are/were ongoing lately, I decided to tackle this kit.
So far the build is everything I wanted to be - renewed my deteriorated modelling mojo back to the normal, frenzylike levels:) All the parts fit perfectly with one another, there is no flash, the ejectorpin marks are put on such places, that just few of them will be visible and hence, require filling and the level of detail is excellent. In order to say something not that positive about the kit, I will mention that the plastic is tan, ICM like and veeery soft. In other words - prone to injuries as can be seen on the second picture. Still this kind of plactis really easily melts, under the Tamiya SUper thin glue and the bonds, that are created are very strong!
I'm started working on the interior, the wood grain is oils over acrilycs. The paints used are pretty standart Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan and Gunze Radome H-318. Th eoils are some kind of orange, burnt umber and burnt sienna.
For the linen I used Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan, for the interior parts Tamiya XF-18 medium blue. The metal parts are done in a new for me way - using the AK interactive true metal paste. This thing is great for small to medium sized details, it is applied with a brush and polished. It looks like the thing, but not as good as Alclad paints, still it is absolutely acceptable for me and there is no need to clean the airbrush for 15 min after 30sec of painting a small part!
Today I'm going for a snowboard vacation in the Austrian alps, so the next update is going to be in 2-3 weeks. In the mean time questions, comments, reccomendations or constructive criticism are most welcomed :)
best reagrds,
Sasho

Great to see another brilliant GasPatch Salmson being built and what you have done so far is looking really good. I hope you enjoy your snowboarding holiday and I look forward to your return and more updates on this build.

You're off to a brilliant start, Sasho. Like Des, I'm glad to see another Gaspatch Salmson being built. Just yesterday, I was going through the instructions in mine, dreaming of a future build. The 5 color scheme on such a complex model has me a bit nervous, though. Not a problem for you.
Cheers,
Bud

Outstanding start on a beautifully designed kit! Your interior is looking terrific!

a small update, lately I have been back to working on this one and got the interior nearly ready. The big challenge is the fact the you have to close the fuselage and just thensand the floor and add some of the interior rigging. This still awaits me, but I think I figured how to do it!
Here are the pictures as usually any commends, questions, reccomendations or constructie criticism aremost welcomed!
Best regards,

Yes, no suggestions, you're doing a great job! Hard to believe it's 1/48 :)

You have done a brilliant job so far on this kit Sasho, the colours you have used are excellent, it is a beautiful kit and you are doing it justice.
Des.

This is coming along beautifully, Sasho, well done! I have a Gaspatch Salmson in the stash, just crying out to be done.
Best wishes

Beautiful work Sasho. Amazing interior and I think
your wood effects are gorgeous. Well done, and I
look forward to the next updates!

Exellent work and paint Sasho.

Fine work, SsashoO! It is nice to see this 48 scale cockpit almost as busy as its larger WNW brother's.
One question, is there no camera and its frame just in front of the observer's pit? This is actually the only substantial item missing in my eyes when I recollect my WNW build.
-
Thank you guys for the comments, I appreciate them :) The only fallback of the interior is that, unlike the WnW one, you can't build it separatly and then close the fuselage around it. It is part of the fuselage halves and hence, there is some seam sanding to be done on the inside after closure and just then several more rigging wires that have to be rigged when the fuselage is closed.
@Przemol: there are 4 different cameras in total and you have to pick one of them. I opted for the small camera at the back and not for one of the 3 larger ones that can be mounted behind the fuel tank. If you ask me why, I don't have a definitive answer, it was just the first one I prepared.
-
I like this build very much.
Stefan
-
Hello gentlemen,
A very good beginning. Forward !!! ;)
Best regards.
Alain.
-
The build continues :)
I have closed the fuselage and here I encounter the first difficulties with the fit. Maybe it is just mine kit, but the halves of teh fuselage were warped a bit and gluing them was a small issue, that was overcomed with a lot of rubber bands, curses, swears and other similar fit and glue enhancements! Somehow I succeed in breaking a wire after I glued the halves and repairing is impossible. The good thing is taht it is so far inside that it will be hardly visible.
The natural metal panels were painted using the "Bertl's technique"- main colour ALclad II Stainless steel, the aluminium is too light and looks too much like the colour of the silver dope, I wanted to achieve better contrast between the two similar colours. AFter it with cut to 2-3mm round brush, I made spots with Iron and Chrome Silver (Gunze metalizers, NOT acrylics) and just then all the 3 colours were polished with cottonbud in order to get rid of the borders between them...more or less.
For the main colour of silver dope, I used white and chrome silver (both Gunze acrylics) in ration 3 white:1 silver chrome, but it was too dark. Si I repainted with 5 white:1 silver, this way receiving a very light grey colour with metalic glitter. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it is pleasing for my eye. After this I masked the rib tapes and sprayed very diluted Tamiya Smoke to make the darker lines around the ribs and to make dirty spots here and there. I used the following mixture Tamiya clear (gloss):Tamiya Smoke:Mr. Leveling Thinner in ration 2:1:2 and very low pressure.
I decided to be using the new Aviattic linen decals for this plane and particularly the light german variant. They are in 1/32 scale, but I think that on 1/48 they used convincing enough, even thou out of scale. Those decals are nearly completely trasparent and just adds the fabric texture and a bit of greyness to the paintwork. I'm not sure if it is visible from the pictures, but in real looks terrific. The decals were layed over the silver dope, which was quite glossy in a very convinient way. Unfortunately I made few mistakes and the decal will probably will not be enough, so the upper wing will be attached when I got new quantitis...or the horizontal stabilizer and the rudder :)
Next step will be preparation for the rigging, preparing the engine and the details that should be glued over the metal panels.
Thats all for now, as usually any comments, reccomendations, questions or constructive criticism are most welcome!
best regards,
Sasho

Wow, beautiful! It's still hard to believe this is 1/48. The metal on your cowling is amazing!

You are doing a great job Sasho, the interior looks brilliant and the metal finish you have achieved looks amazing.

I agree completely with Des! Beautiful interior and the silver finish is outstanding!

Great work to all.

Thank you very much for the kind comments!
a small update, I totally messed the red stripe so I will be redoing it. The engine have few other parts to be added and some places to be sanded and/or painted. I will have to repaint the fuselage-to-wings joining places. The macro exposed a lot of details that will need touch-ups, but she starts to shape up :)

Hi!
We can see your mojo is back!
Great build!
Maybe a bit of preshading along the metallic panel lines would give the kit more depth?
Keep it up!
ciao

Looks perfect Sasho.
Martin
-
What's wrong with the red stripe, Sasho? I think it looks fantastic, as does the rest of the model. Brilliant work all 'round.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Outstanding work! Like Bud I can't see anything wrong with the red stripe!
RAGIII
-
It all looks pretty good to my eyes, well done.
Des.
-
Thanks people for the comments :)
The red stripe was angled wrong, but last night I fixed that! I had a painting session till midnight, but hopefully it looks better now.
@Iwik: I plan on doing a lot of postshading, panel lines and details accenting, maybe a dot filter and some other tricks to add depth to the finish. I just want to finish with the major painting (red stripe) add the small parts, finish the engine first and add the anchor points/turnbuckles (as required) for the rigging first. I plan to use Tamiya pane line accenter, some pigments, some oil colors, very thinned black acrylic paint for the exhaust detail accenting - it is painted with NATO black, which is very dark green/gray colour and is lighter than the regular black.
Best regards,
Sasho
-
That is a great job!!!! I love that painting and preshading is just stunning!!!
Lukas

She is shaping up most excellent so far :)
Terri

Thank you again for the comments Terri, Lukas, Des, RAGIII, Coyotemagic, Radio and Iwik, they are appreciated :)
Just a slight update - finally I came to the fun part - rigging :), but while I'm preparing the upper wing, I will have to repair the paint on few places, especially where the wings conects to the body. Fortunately, I'm waiting for new decal sheet, that I need to decal the tail, so I'm not in a hurry and meanwhile I will do those repairs.
Here are the pictures, as always comments, constructive criticism or questions are more then welcomed!
Best regards,
Sasho

That looks like a lot of rigging!!! She is coming along nicely!!! ;)
Lukas

Beautiful work all around! This will look awesome with all of the rigging!
RAGIII
-
excellent work on your salmson
-
Thank you verymuch dear fellow forumeetes :)
A little update - I managed to put the upper wing on and to do the rigging but few lines that will be attached after I add teh front gun and the control lines for the ailerons. I also decided to use a camera instead of a gun for the observer's place. There are plenty of models with guns on the back seat, but the ones with camera are way less numerous :)
Now I have to finish the tail, but I'm waiting for those decals from Aviattic, that will come together with the 1:32 motorcycle :)
AS usual any comments, questions or constructive criticism are most welcome!

Great model all around. I could repeat everything Bertl has just said. Looking forward to see it completed.

Looking awesome! I'm really enjoying your build. :)

The rigging is magnificent! Gorgeous build all around. The quality of your Modeling and the quality of the kit make this one easy to misidentify as a 1/32nd kit!
RAGIII

Beautiful work on this great model.
I also appreciate the choice of the camera, rather unusual.
A great kit for a great modeler!
Good luck with your modelling mojo

This is really coming together beautifully, the rigging looks superb and it is a great choice to fit the camera instead of the machine gun.

Thank you very much guys for your nice comments and encouragement, it is much appreciated. This build took like 6months more than I was thinking of investing in it initially, but actually I'm happy because it is shaping the way I like it :)
I'm back from vacation for a week or so and thursday going again, first to the Black Sea and then to to Greece for even some more chillin at the beach :)
This week at home was used to attach the prepeller, the tail and nearly to rig it, but still there are few lines to be attached. Hopefully the next post will be in finished models!
