Hi all, I am new to these forums and I am starting my second foray into WW1 modeling after completing a WNW SE5a a couple of years ago. I love the WNW kits and they have attracted me to WW1 aviation modeling. The detail is so good and the build quality is on par with Tamiya in my opinion, also I think the scale is perfect.
Anyway I have an ambitious plan on building 3-4 Jasta 5 Albatros and am starting with Lt Wolf's plane and will be using the FCM decal sheet. This will be out of the box except for some Master gun barrels
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/ltwolf_zps4faca890.png) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/ltwolf_zps4faca890.png.html)
Anyway I made a start today and this is what I have accomplished to date, at this stage I am just doing little bits and pieces whilst I work out the best way to build this kit
I have seen a couple of builds where the nail heads? have been simulated using a riveter and as I have never done any riveting before and like to try something new on each of my models I thought I would give it a go. Apologies for the pic as I had to use my phone.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/086_zps17cfa801.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/086_zps17cfa801.jpg.html)
I also opened up the exhaust- not perfect but better than stock I think
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/090_zps73f58715.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/090_zps73f58715.jpg.html)
I read that the section behind the pilots seat is meant to be fabric even though the kit tells you to paint it as wood, so I decided to use some Tamiya tape to try and dodgy this look. I have already sprayed some grey primer on and will attempt to airbrush the lozenge pattern. If anyone can help me with what paint colours to use that would be appreciated. Again apologies for the pic quality.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/088_zpsb1841322.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/088_zpsb1841322.jpg.html)
I have seen others produce a really nice seat and cushion so had a go at making one myself using putty. I am not 100% happy with it so would like to hear any thoughts on whether to keep this or not?
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/087_zpsd46d01b0.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/087_zpsd46d01b0.jpg.html)
Finally I added some detail to the tank by dremelling some indents into the front.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/089_zps59914bd0.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/089_zps59914bd0.jpg.html)
Any comments or tips are most welcome as I could use all the help I can get
Thank you
Anthony

You are off to a great start! The riveting/nail heads look like they will be effective once painted and the darker wash or whatever you use shows them off!
RAGIII
-
Thanks RAGIII. I am hoping the rivets will show through the decals on the fuselage when done.
-
With a wash (or pastel powder) they will show up. Good to see your work here. WWI modeling has a special appeal as you are finding out.
You seat cushion looks pretty good, and I would suggest smaller "buttons". Leather color and some washes will work wonders. Nicely done!
-
As far as I can see, your seat cushion looks ok. You might want to add some buttons, though.
Stefan
-
Thanks guys. Any suggestions how to add buttons?
Cheers
-
Use a part of sprue, stretched to the appropriate diameter, cut tiny slices as buttons. Insert. Repeat.
Stefan
-
You have made a great start so far Anthony, the seat cushion looks fine but will be enhanced with buttons and some leather paint.
Des.
-
Good work, Anthony. The opening of the exhaust looks well
done and your seat cushion, with a couple of extras already
mentioned will be first rate. Well done, and thanks for sharing. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Good beginning.

Suggest maybe hunting down loz decal for the baffle rather than attempting to paint it, or paint it CDL as the scant photo record doesn't seem to confirm loz used here, but does confirm Plain linen
(For a rehash of this discussion see my build log here (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=328.60))

thanks everyone for your help.
Bo, wow you are nuts (in a nice way). That is spectacular. I have been proceeding with the build and will post pics later today
Cheers

A few more bits and pieces have been worked on.
I started on the interior woodwork. I'm not 100% happy with it at this stage but may try and do a bit more to it.

I also painted the fuel tank and quite like the final result.

I originally attempted to paint the canvas behind the pilot seat in a lozenge colour but after Bo directed me to his thread I went with a pale linen colour instead.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/004_zpsb7e4e1ff.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/004_zpsb7e4e1ff.jpg.html)

I used Alcald Dark Aluminium followed by a wash for these drums to get a slightly darker look.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/013_zps35b7f5e3.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/013_zps35b7f5e3.jpg.html)
And finally I added some buttons to the seat and painted it a red leather colour followed by a wash and some dry brushing

Any comments welcome

Yeah, that fuel tank looks great! Nice.
-
A very good update.
Martin

Very nicely done.
Drew

Like Bo,I think your fuel tank came out very nice! I think your interior wood is great. Perfect honey tone, and not overstated. JMHO of course :D
RAGIII
-
thank you gentlemen for your kind words. I am working on the interior still but have a couple of questions. Can anyone suggest want paints to get for the mauve and green for the upper wing colours. I use Tamiya and Gunze/Mr Hobby acrylics but colours called for in the kit instructions sound wrong to me. Also has anyone used the decal sheet that I have, I am thinking of ordering the Pheon ones to use instead?
Cheers
Anthony

Brilliant start, Anthony. I may be starting an Albatros next, so I'll be following along closely.
Cheers,
Bud

Coming along nicely ! I have used FCM decals and they were fine.

Thanks all for your support. Back into this after xmas/new year and looking after my kids whilst on school holidays. I spent an hr or so putting the cockpit together and am about to start on the engine.

Looks great so far, Anthony!

The cockpit interior is looking really good, you did a great job on the seat, looking forward to seeing what you do with the engine.
Des.

Thanks Des.
I have managed to do a bit more. I actually built and painted the engine and exhaust the other day but only uploaded the photos today.

The fuselage is joined and I undercoated in Tamiya fine white spray. I think the nail heads look good and I am happy with the look.

Yesterday I sprayed the Jasta 5 red and green on the tail and this morning I started drawing some wood grain over the white using a pencil- an idea I borrowed from another build I saw on the net. Hopefully this will show throw the white rectangles of the decals.

Thanks for looking. More to come soon
Anthony

Very nice work.
Martin
-
The engine is looking really good as is the tail green and red, I like the nail heads. What have you used to mark the wood grain pattern on the side of the fuselage.
Des.
-
Thanks Martin and Des.
I am just using a lead pencil. I wanted to use grey but you think my kids had a grey pencil between the 3 of them! I am going to go over it with a thin coat of white before I gloss and decal over it all.
-
Seen the same technique on a build on Facebook... think he used different tan and brown pencils!
Build is looking great!!!
-
This one is coming along nicely. The pit, and tail markings are excellent! I am looking forward to seeing the results of the pencil graining.
RAGIII
-
thanks guys. me too RAGIII! Hopefully it shows through.
-
Anthony,
Wow! - your work on this looks very impressive so far - love the way you have done the exhaust as it look very realistic.
Regards
Dave
-
thanks very much Dave. I like how it turned out. There is a bit of blue on the tips that didn't show up in the pic but looks good to the eye.
Cheers
Anthony

Hi Anthony,
Great work so far! Your wood painting is very nice. The aging of the parts is tremendous. Keep up the great work!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Thanks Patrick!
Well after 1 decal panel a night for the past week this is what I have-
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/001_zps11aa0e42.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/001_zps11aa0e42.jpg.html)
Here is a close up of the "wood graining" - it looks better from afar methinks. I am happy with the nail heads though.
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/drizzt73/002_zps0a155e8e.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/drizzt73/media/002_zps0a155e8e.jpg.html)
Now I have to carefully mask over the decals ??? and paint the grey strip. The decal instructions called for me to measure some exact distances and paint the grey before applying the decals but I didn't trust myself so decided to do it this way. Time will tell if this was a smart decision.
Cheers
Anthony
-
Yeah, that fuel tank looks great! Nice.
I like your fuel tank too. :D :D
-
That looks fantastic, Anthony! Just make sure to apply a couple coats of flat over the decals to keep the tape from sticking and you should be fine.
Cheers,
Bud
-
thanks guys. Bud I just came in from the garage after putting a gloss coat over the decals. Should I do a flat coat also before masking?
-
Hi all, been a little while since I posted. I have managed a little time at the workbench. The fuselage is nearly done and I have completed all the decals and done a light panel wash.

I have also started on the only aftermarket for this build- the very nice Master Spandau's.

Once they are painted I will start on the wings and landing gear. Can anyone suggest the best colours and way to pain the MG's? I was thinking of Black with a bit of gunmetal mixed in?
Cheers
Anthony
-
Hi,
A couple of ways of finishing the Spandaus:
Airbrush some Vallejo black surface primer 70.602- you can airbrush it straight from the bottle.
When properly cured, allow at least a day for this, airbrush Model Master Gunmetal again, straight from the jar.
The finish looks very like the real guns I have seen in museums.
Alternatively, immerse the brass parts in AK interactive Brass photoetch burnishing fluid.
You have to give it two seperate baths, and watch the components as they change from brass to blackened metal.
The top Spandaus ( modelmaster parts)are method 1, the lower jacket( WNW Hansa Brandenburg photoetch parts), is using the burnishing fluid method.
Hope this helps?

Nice work!
As for the gun colour, I usually mix my own version using Pactra Glossy Black with Citadel Mithril Silver. Works fine for me. You can see how it contrasts vs pure black and pure silver in my recently finished Roland: http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=4889.0

Your Albatros is looking fantastic! Nice work on painting that grey stripe!

Outstandind work to your build Anthony.
Martin
-
Hi Anthony - beautiful work, which is why I must tell you that the gold coloured part on the engine intake manifold is on upside down. Please cut it off and flip it up the right way. :)
With regards to the guns, I like Tamiya NATO black (a very dark grey) with a drop of NATO brown and a drop of Aluminium.
Thanks for the heads up :).
-
thanks all for your kind words and suggestions for the guns. I will do a mix of nato black and silver/aluminium I think. I have also seen some do a black spray followed by graphite drybrushing?.
PS Przemil your Roland is sweet.
Cheers

A quick update. I have painted the MG's, I ended up using a black, burnt Iron and aluminum mix followed by a black wash and am happy with the result. I had trouble taking a good pic of them though and it looks more silver in the photo than to the eye.

I also painted the skid and added some "rope" to give it a bit more detail.

I then added some oil stains to the underside near the ports

Finally I have started on the underside of the wings today. This morning I sprayed the light blue and have just finished spraying some Tamiya Smoke to highlight the ribbing. I would like to dirty it up more. Any suggestions/techniques to use here. I was thing maybe rubbing some pigment on with a cotton tip?

Wonderful work.
Very original try with the wood grain. We have to wait the final result to have a good idea of the work.
I always wonder aboutthe wwod question grain. did paint cover or not the wood?
I'l thinking about the Baumer decoration...
This result is very interesting, and I imagine to use clear tamiya paints:
but is it realistic?
sorry for the digression...

Yes xan it is a bit different. I am new to WW1 modeling so thought I would try it out. It isn't perfect but meh. That's a nice pic of Baumer's plane. Where is that from?

The fuselage decals turned out excellent, a very stunning scheme, and the engine is superb, well done Anthony. The wings are shaping up nicely with the shading done very well.

The wings are done and I have put the MG's, windscreen, exhaust etc onto the fuselage. I have now started on making some turnbuckles using Des' awesome tutorials.

Hi all, Slow progress as I have been making turnbuckles and eyelets but tonight I finished attaching the line to the lower upper wing. Now I need to attach the upper wing to the rest of the plane but after a test fit I am unsure how to go about it. There seems to be a lot of tension on the outer joins and when I am trying to line up the inner joins it is all wobbly and very hard to work with an I am worried about breaking one of the spars (not sure what the supports are called). Does anyone have any tips as this is very stressful.

Well after a day spent rigging I am in the home straight- just the prop and a radiator pipe to do. Here's some pics of where she is at. The photos show she needs a good dusting and a bit of a tidy up but I am happy with how she looks.

Very beautiful build Anthony.

I am still a little iffy about the woodgrain, Anthony, but other than that I think
you have done a superb job of the Alby! I particularly like the paint and decal
work. The shading on the wings is beautifully done. Out of curiosity, what
paint did you use for the mauve? Well done! :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
