Hi all!
It has been a while since my last addition to the forum, and now it is high time for a new build!
I must say that in this time lapse, I sneeked through the post and was amazed and inspired by the stunning work I saw: great craftmanship and attention to detail, to say nothing to the quality of the executions... I am not sure I'll be able to mach this quality, but it is very inspiring to see what can be acheived and this makes me willing to give it a try :)
So I'll tackle an old subject that is waiting in my stash from some years now: it is the DH2 from the "Duelist" package that stayed put since the eindecker build.
picture will come soon...

ok, let's start with some pictures of a propeller I did just to practice the 'pencil painting' I learned from Bertl.
Not perfect, I know, but a big enhancement over my previous aptempt...

Ok viewing the pictures I see that the quality is not that good... I used a flash and the colours are not at all the real ones... I'll try to get some better pictures next time.
Anyway, This is the kit of this build:
See the nice packaging? ;)
I modified the seat and the compass first, so here is how it tourned out.... again, the picture quality is what it is...

Next I cleaned and modify the interior of the nacelle.

Hope you like it!
have a nice day!

Nice to see you back and busy Edo, I'm presently building a DH2 as well so I'll be watching your progress and following your ideas closely.
Cheers,
Lance

Good to see you here again Edo, the prop is lovely! Quite some miniature weaving you've got going on that wicker seat.
-
Welcome back, Edo! Gorgeous prop and your interior enhancements are brilliant.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hello to all,
Nice add-on. I wonder how it will be painted.
Best regards.
Alain.
-
Welcome back Edo, happy to see you here and building again, and what a subject you have chosen, the DH.2, one of my all time favorite aeroplanes. You did a brilliant job on the propeller, this is an art I am still trying to perfect, you nailed it. The interior detailing will prove very worthwhile once things start going together, looking forward to following along with this build.
Des.
-
Edo, I will be following your build with great interest. Your
propeller is superb. The compass has the just right look to
it. As Bo mentioned that is some job weaving the chair!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you guys!
your warm comments make me feel at home! :)
Lance, I saw your great build. It is an inspiration to me, you did a great work on the interior and the overall finish is super clean.
Bo, I saw your great builds, the Albie and the Fokker. I was stunned as when I studied the DH2 sprues searchin for something to improve as I keept saying myself: "how it is possible that Bo super detailed this or that, as they are already perfect?" still you did! giving an inspiration to all of us!
Des, thank you mate! this site is just wonderful, a great communiy and I am proud to be part of it.

The seat is absolutely brilliant to behold - what did you use for your improvements? Tiny copper wire, i assume?
And your prop is impressive. You learned very well from Master Bertl.
Stefan
-
Hallo Stefan!
Yes, Mastro Bertl is an artist and does great tutorials! :)
The seat vertical 'sturds' are copper wire, the waving is 0,1 mm fishing line, the top is copper wire (bigger diametre) covered with milliput.
hope this helps!

Hi Edo,
Very nice propeller and a lovely seat; The compass is the real thing!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hi Edo!
That knitting on that seat is unreal!!!! ;) how did you do that?
Cheerio
Lukas
-
Insane! But so good! :) :)
-
hi guys!
It was actually very tedious to knit the seat, but I hope it will tourn out better then the kit offering.... I made me a little hook with copper wire to drag the fishing line bethween the ribs, but it was slow nevertheless... :'(
by the way, I was ready to apply wood grain to the sturds when I discovered that they were supposed to be gray :o... now do you have any reference they were wood? I would like much more this way, as I think there will be more colour variation to the model...
what do you think?
thank you for the advice

Hallo all!
I have some updates for you!
I have been so fashinated with "wood graining with pencils" that I kept experimenting with it.
Here is a comparison bethween my last propeller (the one I did for the Eindecker build) and a new one ... The picture just speaks from itself!
So I decided to just keep on using pencils for my wood surfaces. ;D
Here is the results on the sturds and on the cockpit.
I love this technique beceuse to me it gives so much more possibility of control then oil paint. With just a different order in applying colours and/or with just a pressure modulation one can acheive tones variation which, to me, adds to the realism and to the appeal of the whole model. I hope the images are good enough to see it...
My last picture for today is one of the seat

This is all for now!

You are achieving excellent results using pencils for your wood grain effect, this is a technique I will have to try.
Des.

Great improvement on the prop Edo, really well done! The results of your technique on the struts is very impressive as well, you've got a really nice Build coming here.
Cheers,

Nice work Edo. The pencil grain effect is good, and it sure gives one many options.

Outstanding use of the pencil technique!

Hi friends!
I have some update for you :) but, first of all, I want to show you the result of my experiment to simulate canvas texture on wings.
I applied some glue on a piece of plasticard then I pressed a cloth on it, levaing the cloth texture on the plastic. Then I painted it CDL and highlighted with some black pigment. What do you think? Should I dare the same treatment to the wings?
I also need an advice on the seat belts... I don't like them: they are way too big to let the seat be seen... what do you think? Would it be too 'aggressive' to leave them off?
Ok, enough questions for now! ;) Here are the updates:
Engine

This is all for now!
Hope you'll enjoy!!

Beautiful work Edo, the canvas texturing idea you had is clever, do you plan to use it on the main surfaces? Wings, nacelle and tail planes?
I tried some years ago the pencil technique to reproduce wood grain on my Albatros W4 proprller, but it did not work because the pencil (I used some fine art pencils) did not draw on the flat primer or on the other flat colours, whoch pencils did you use and how?
Ciao e complimenti ancora!
Antonio
-
Very nice work Edo. Instruments are just wonderful! Lovely engine and interior. The seatbelts are indeed quite enormous. Good idea for the canvas structure, but should be seen for the whole of the fuselage, I don't know butmaybe it could come out very nice. Well done!!!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hello Edo:
I like the canvas effect you achieved. If you can do it on the wings it will certainly add to the overall appearance. Instruments look good.
Best
Mark
-
Hallo Gents!
Thank you very much for the kind comments!
Antonio, well to tell the truth I just used some pencil left over by my kids ::)
so no particular make indeed...
some can be wetted in water though (which is useful to cover any scratches caused by other pencils), but some are not and I usally use them dry.
I believe a good coat of matt vernish is the key (I use Testors dullcote) and also very 'soft' pencils are of great help. For instance, the black I use to simulate wood knots is from a no marked pencil but it is very soft and works great!
Mark & Patrick, I am very scared to treat like that all the surface... what if I mess up??? Maybe I'll try on the rudder since there are 2 in the box ! ::)
ciao
Edo
-
p.s.
I forgot to say that after applying the variuts pencils I usually rub them with a cotton bud (Q-tip).
It blends the colours and makes it shine like magic, one could also got away without clear coating it... ;D
give it a try!!
ciao
-
Thanks Edo, for your information, will try again, indeed I sprayed a matt varnish before trying my pencils (they are water"-blendable" as well).
I agree with your fear to spoil the large surfaces to have the fabric texture, that's why I was asking... which glue did you use for your experiment?
Ciao
AnDonio
-
Edo,
I really like the effect you produced for CDL. I'd try it for all your CDL surfaces, I think it would look great. Maybe try it on one lower wing surface and, if you don't like it you can strip it and revert back to your normal surface. The seat belts appeared far too big to me as well so I used some HGW's I had left over that were nearly identical. (most of their sets do 2 models)
I'm following your Build closely to see all of the things I could, or should have done on mine, looking very good so far!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Exellent work Edu.
Martin
-
Beautiful work, Edo! I like the fabric effect you've achieved with glue, but a safer, more consistent result might be achieved with the Aviattic CDL sheets. I love that prop and your cockpit painting. Personally, I would keep the belt, but maybe hang one side of it over the cockpit coaming to expose the seat. Just an idea.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thank you guys!
Lance, thank you my friend! We are somewhat autoreferentials, as I'm using your build as a guide too... ;)
Bud, your idea is great! I had not thought of that! I'll try it for sure! Thank you mate! I'll also check the Aviattic CDL sheets!
Antonio, I am still trying to put at service an old Tamyia 'lemon' liquid cement I bought some years back. The shopkeeper told me it had a good smell so SWMBO would not argue.... unfortunately he omitted to say it is a lot worse than 'regular' thin cement from the same manufacturer >:(
see you soon my friends!
ciao
Edo
-
Your DH.2 is looking brilliant Edo, the engine turned out extremely good and your wood treatment is great. I like your idea to try and simulate the fabric texture using glue and fabric pressed into it, but as already said, the Aviattic fabric decals are superb and would be a lot easier to use in my opinion. Keep up the good work Edo, it is coming together beautifully.
Des.

hey Des!
thank you, my friend!
I'll experiment a bit more on the surplus rudder, I'll post some picture soon.
sure aviattic sheets looks terrific....
btw, the upper reserve tank has a transparent pipe... why transparent? in the instruction it has to be painted gray or brass.... any suggestions?
thank you

Hi guys!
minor update today, but I wanted to check with you the outcome of the propeller.
It is not finished yet, so not the details are set.
I painted it with the pencil technique.
what do you think?

Edo,
The transparent pipe is actually a visual "sight gauge, you'll notice it goes in at the top of the tank and also the bottom. The brass or grey refers to the fittings at each end, the middle pipe being glass. This feature was not included on the later production batches.
Cheers,
Lance

thank you all for your kind comments!
Lance: thank you my friend! Your explanation really clarifies all!
I understand now, but what was it used for?
ciao
edo

The clear glass tubes were used on fuel tanks and oil tanks to give the pilot a visual indication of fuel/oil quantity. This was commonly used before the introduction of fuel gauges on the instrument panel.
Des.

edo
Edo,
The level of fuel in the tank would be matched by the level of fuel visible in the glass pipe, thus the Pilot could verify how much fuel he had before flight. With the tank being on top of the wing a visual check would be a lot easier then climbing up and "dipping" or looking into the tank to ensure a full fuel load. I wouldn't think it would be very useful in flight.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thank you. This makes a lot of sense!
Lance, yes, it wolud be hard to climb on the wing and check during flight... ;)
This remembers me those old movies of flying circus where people walked on wings during flight and jumped from one aircraft to the next... well, nobody was shooting at them, nevertheless quite a scary sport !

The propeller is beautiful ! ;)

I think that prop looks absolutely gorgeous!!! ;) When I get home I'm planning to have a go with pencils on my spare props that I have left :) Great to see your progress!!!

Lovely work on that prop. I am about to do mine am also going to try the pencil technique. Inspirational

Anthony
-
thank you very much, my friends!
your comments are very supportive!
to tell the truth, a good friend of mine ;), told me that the lamination is not appropriate for british prop, as it was more a german feature... so the prop is currently been washed anew with alcohol and it is being repainted... I'll show you some picture soon.,
nevertheless, the pencil method is great, it gives you a lot of freedom on what colour you want to stress, resulting in different wood shades, and it very easy to control! you should defintely give it a try!

Came in a little late on this thread, but am very interested in the "pencil method." And recommendations on the brand of pencils; perhaps a little tutorial on how to progress through the process. Really enjoy seeing the various creative methods used by each contributor this this forum. Makes the model building a lot of fun!
-
hallo rickcap!
the wood grain by pencil is a great technique indeed!
but i am only trying to emulate what can be done by the master of this techinque: Mastro Bertl (aka umlaufmotor).
if you whant a tutorial, you should have a look at the thread 'painting laminated props' (link below)
forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com » WW1 Aircraft Modeling » Hints and Tips/Questions about modeling » Painting laminated props?
also, in that thread, you will find another cross reference to a build by Bertl with a more extensive tutorial, here is the link.
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=3195.225
I remember a series of tutorial by Bertl on various subjects which were very interesting, but I can't find them right now... maybe somone else can help....

Hi friends!
I have some update for you: wings and fusolage painted and mounted.
As I told you I tryed to emulate canvas texture by pressing a cloth on the surface of the model that was previously covered with plastic glue. To tell the truth, even if the result was not that bad and consistent all over the plane, I think that the effort is not worthy, fortunately no damage done either!
The ribs shadow is made with pastels powder, and this time I like the result!
Lastly, I decided to paint the roundels, as I don't like very much the kit decals particularely the one 'hand painted' surely historically accurate, but not my liking... ;)
