Title: WNW Felixstowes now available
Post by: Dave W on December 09, 2014, 07:29:06 AM
Wingnuts have just uploaded the Felixstowes to their website as available next week- the price is $US 269. Taking pre orders with the kits available for shipping next week.

Bigger surprise, they are doing pre orders for a new Duellists double kit of a Felixstowe...and a Hansa Brandenburg W.29 - price is $US 349. Also available next week.

that build up of the late version is simply beautiful and thrilling to behold - I still hardly can believe this is a real release in 1/32nd scale....

Prices are more than I expected.

Converting to Aussie dollars the Felixstowes would cost $A 324 and the Duellist set would cost $A 420.

It will be interesting to see how much Felixstowe enthusiasm is converted to actual sales now we know the price.

I hope they see fit to bring out a new boxing of the W.29. Only then will my interest be sparked!

I am wondering if it is the "free" shipping that is a big impact on this end price? That box is huge and probably pretty heavy as well. I know shipping anything that size outta the USA to international destinations is brutally expensive unless you send it by surface (four to six weeks delivery)

It translates into a LOT of hobby time, or a profit on eBay...

I'm the opposite Bob, not interested at all in the W29.  I choose most models for aesthetic reasons and the W29 never grabbed my attention.

The Early Felixstowe however.....

Well, I'm disappointed. I would've bought one, but not for CDN$309.00. If it got nailed for import duty, it would be at least another CDN$40.00. That's just too hard to justify for a single model kit.

Cheers,

Chris

Well, has anyone looked at the parts breakdown on the trees and figured out how that "wing break" is supposed to work?  If memory serves, WNW said you could break it down for storage. No dog in this hunt, mind you, but just curious as a spectator.

Yup, scratching my head over that one too.  Exactly what is one to do with the rigging when removing the wings?   :)

I also like the comment on page 20 about taking 7 days for the dihedral to settle.  What's that all about?

Cheers,

Ooo...I think I figured it out!   Once fully assembled and rigged, each outer wing section can be removed as a unit thanks to those big tabs.  The only complication I see is the rigging between the wings and forward fuselage.  Just a few lines though so them could probably be made to be removable as well.

Now that they've resurrected the W.29 with teh "Duelist" boxing, I wonder if they'll do the same with the R.E.8?  Now, that one I'll pick up. I sure didn't expect it to sell out as soon as it did.

So....after looking at both F'stowes instructions and decals, it appears that it is up to the builder to create the really splashy markings. Has some one found anything to the contrary? For the iconic and bold markings on both versions, I see no decals, no masks, no patterns and not even profiles of both sides of the fuselage/hulls. How then are we to knowledgeably recreate the stripes, and or dazzle patterns accurately?

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

I too was a little puzzled by the lack of profile views although for at least the early striped scheme the pattern would probably be the same on both sides.  I want to do the black and white early version and found it interesting that the starboard side pattern was based on a sketch as no photograph exists for it.  Speculative at best!  I had hoped black decals would have been provided for the patterns.  That thing will be a bear to mask by hand.  Maybe someone like Montex will come out with a mask set.  Or would Pheon consider tackling that as a decal project?

Cheers,
Eric

We are modelers after all.  I can live with the idea of having to mask off the "dazzle" schemes.

Hello to all,
It's a marvellous Christmas surprise !!
Sure, I'll buy the Felixstowes !! Perhaps, the Duellist. W29 price will be cheaper on Ebay...  ;D
For masking, in France, we have that:
http://www.vanillajoy.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/silhouettea.jpg
I bought it with a group of friends (about 200 €) and it's very efficient. Software is free. We use oromask. For example, on my red Pfalz DXII, no transfert, only masks done with this machine.
Best regards.
Alain.

I agree, looking at the planking under the hull, getting decals to settle would be a challenge.  Masking much the same, but at least we can mask/unmask until we are ready to spray...

We all have different circumstances, some folks can afford these come what may, for others, not so.

it is a very valid point that one can buy 3 other exceptional WNW kits for the price of the Felixstowe, and it is easier to justify spending $69-99 per model.  However assuming say a 6 month build period for the Felixstowe, month by month it isn't too bad.

I just hope it doesn't sell out before my coins jar has enough in it!

Wife ordered the duellist set! Love herXX I'll use Pheon decals. Seems the kit needs masking...... A lot.

I have the Pheon Decals and love them; but there are some pieces missing that can be cobbled together. Notably the number on the ammo chutes (they're shown on page 11 of WNW instructions) and some propeller markings and it looks like WNW has them based on the instruction scanes. Don't get me wrong; Pheon's markings are spot on; there is just some missing and I would probably use both sets on mine.

Agree! I am amazed at some of the prices for the W.29. I usually stop around $150 and eBay keeps sending me notifications that I missed out on a deal. I don't think so.  :)  If you look at the costs for the duelist the W.29 is only $80 which is cheaper than when it originally came out.

this morning my heart skipped a beat... like the 2 previous years the surprise from my Kiwi friends had me grasping for air (i SCUBA dive). i was considering both announced versions because of the paint schemes. The combo with Christiansen's W.29 (he's considered a war criminal over here because of his actions in 1944) and the dramatic story of the actual fight pulled me to the dark side... Also i recently spoke with Alex (Uschi) who had brought his S. Camel fuselage. The heavy varnish gave it a VERY appealing Finnish which will look stunning on the Felix's body. As i already decided i wanted the late version i've spent more on scale models in one go than ever before... As i have a very busy job the next thing is when wil i ever find the time to build them. i'll be a worse hoarder than ever but Oh what a joy.

It's an interesting development.  Love the period photos for this kit.

Wish I had shares in the UK customs service, they'll want, how much to land the little dualist box?

I do believe Her Majesty's finest would require approx £45 at todays conversion rate, plus the £8 handling fee for parcel force , brings the whole enterprise for bringing one into dear old blighty around the £275 mark  :'(. I don't think I could ever justify this big outlay, but I in my head I keep hearing " you know you want to" but I will stay strong and hope for a lone W29 release in the future. In all honesty I think the felixstowe is probably beyond my capabilities.

Thanks WNW for another amazing release.

i dont know offering the w-29 in a duellist kit with the felixstowe is only helpful for people with alot of money or really want both. i want a w-29 but have no desire for the felix. hopefully they put out the w-29 by itself soon. although the first thing i said when the w-29 came out was "damn wish it was a w-12" now that that dream has come true i dont truly need the w-29.

If anyone is interested in getting the W.29 and doesn't want the Felixstowe would you care to go in with me and buy the duelist set? Since the W.29 is going upwards of $300 USD on eBay would you be interested in buying it for $120? If you're not keen on Christiansen's plane I'll swap the decals as I have a couple of sets from the original boxing. I've built the W.29 in Norweigian and Austro-Hungarian markings so I have the others.

Thanx,
Carl
