Started a while ago, this is the last of my Udet Albatros machines. It's the basic old Eduard kit, with the Eduard D.III photoetch set and a replacement engine donated from the Karaya Halberstadt Cl.IV. I know I took shots of the interior before sealing it up but for the life of me I can't find them. Here's the box top and sprues minus the fuselage and tail feathers.

So the main thing I wanted to try out with this build are the fabulous Uschi woodgrain decals. I'm using the Extra Fine Ronny Bar set. I undercoated with Tamiya Radome tan and highlighted the panel lines slightly.
-
I've overcoated the decals with a light coat of Tamiya clear yellow; you can see the difference in the tail, which hasn't been overcoated yet. The decals go on well. They're pretty tough, although they do tear easily if you don't use a very sharp blade to trim them after they are on. They went down nicely with Micro Set and Micro Sol. I'm very pleased with the result. It could be argued that the grain is too intense for 1/48; however, I'm sure repeated coats of clear orange and yellow will soften it. In my case, because this machine will be oversprayed with brown, that's not too much of an issue. The one photo of it shows what appears to be a splotchy finish indicating a spray gun was used. I want the wood grain to show through, so I'll use light coats with the airbrush. Next up will be applying the insignia and numbers, since the overcoat goes over the white on the fuselage crosses.

Nice work on the engine and wood grain.

You're off to a great start, Drew! Those Uschi decals look fantastic.

I agree with my Amigo! Great start!

Thanks!
A few other points: the fuel tank is scratched and the incorrect front fuselage panel line have been filled and new ones scribed. I also removed all the vents and hatches since I'll use the photo etch pieces.
Drew

You have made great progress with this model already and so far it is looking very nice, the wood decals are impressive.
Des.
-
Thanks very much!
Slow progress, but I've gotten the decals on that need to be in place before the brown overcoat. All sealed with Future now and ready. I am going with the wood fairings fore and aft of the lower wings instead of metal.
Drew

And the other side.
Drew

A very great and fine work Drew.
Martin

Thank you, Martin.
Drew

Looking nice so far! Terrific work all around.

Overcoating is done. I used Tamiya red brown acrylic and lightly airbrushed it on trying to get the splotchy effect it appears to have in the photo. I'll coat with Future then apply the tail cross, which still had the white border.

very pretty work congratulation!
in the reality, what was this overcoat's the purpose ?
Xan
-
Thanks, Rick, Bud, and Xan. There's a photo of this machine here:
http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi2218.htm
Incidentally, Dragon/DML based their bust of Udet that came with that one version of their D.VII kit on this photo.
Xan, I'm sure others here have much more knowledge about this, but the overspray was probably some sort of camouflage. The varnished light wood on the D.III was pretty bright.

Wing undersides painted and top colors begun.

Very beautiful Drew.
Martin

Drew, the shading (as said above) is beautiful, how did you make it?
Great work so far!
Antonio
-
Thanks, everyone!
Antonio, I masked the ribs with .5 mm masking tape from JammyDog and sprayed thinned Tamiya smoke over them.
Drew
-
Really a very good job!
These older models Eduard still have a beautiful place in our collections!
You proves it to us, with your skill with this achievement.
Bravo!

Thanks!
Lower wing finally attached.

Here's the shading being done on the upper wing: first masking with JammyDog .5 mm tape - really great stuff.

Good job!

Very beautiful paint Drew.
Martin

Thanks very much!
Drew

Shading looks great, Drew. I often have trouble spraying Tamiya Smoke because I can't see it until its too late, and I wind up overdoing it. You certainly don't seem to suffer from that affliction.
Chris
-
Thanks, Chris. I have my share of glitches. So I managed to drop this and knock the left wing off. It took quite a bit of surgery to repair it. I used epoxy this time instead of CA. Anyway, back on track now. The guns are installed. The Karaya engine is taller than the Eduard original, so I had to raise the guns a bit. Still have to add to the ammo feeds to bring them up. I also tried to make the rigging diagram that's visible in the one photo of this machine. My printer doesn't have such fine resolution, but I think it came out OK. I downsized a diagram from a Bristol F2B, but it will be so small you won't notice! I printed a bunch on a sheet of decal paper and am waiting for the ink to dry.

Stunning work Drew! ;D
Martin

Very nice visual tones Drew 8)
Terri

Beautiful work on the post shading, Drew. Not my strong
suit at all. Do you spray between each rib or use an overall
approach, heavier or lighter as you go? Whatever you do,
it's magic, my firend! :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks all! Much appreciated.
Ernie, I mask the ribs and spray diluted Tamiya smoke over each rib. Occasionally I overspray into the area between the ribs, which I did in a few places on these lower wings. When that happens I go back with the original color and spray between the ribs.
Drew
-
Continuing to try my patience, this build keeps fighting me. Snapped off the other lower wing and tried too many times to create a decent decal of the rigging chart. It's blurry but I gave up. Here's the upper wing test fitted.

Your getting there Drew , not much longer now and know you will win the fight .

Wonderful work Drew.
Martin

Keep at it Drew, you are almost there! Despite all the challenges She's looking very nice; I had a similar experience with a Roden DIII which, after many crises, turned out quite nicely. Great work and persistence thus far!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for the kind words and inspiration, everyone!
Drew

Upper wing attached without incident (phew!), last photoetched details added, and now ready for rigging.

Fantastic Drew.
Martin
-
Thanks again!
Not a lot of time the last few weeks, but I did finally get the radiator piping installed, made from a paper clip, and start the rigging. It was a pain routing the lines through the
fuselage instead of through the wing, but I think it was worth the effort. I drilled up through the bottom of the wing and angled a hole from the top through the fuselage, here covered nicely by Eduard's photoetched pieces.
