The first color scheme shown on the WNW site is for #1184. It has what appear to be Polish markings on the fuselage. Can anyone please explain?

This is not a Polish painting, Poland did not have these aircraft.

I believe the red and white squares are meant to represent the German observers badge

To back up James' posting, the W.12 Windsock Datafile says "The rear fuselage bears nine white stripes under the 'observer's badge' of a red/white checquerboard.", and cites photo #s 48 -50 on p.28 of the Datafile.

That makes sense. I was wondering if the observer was of Polish desent and it was his marking. But this sounds more probable.
