OK folks, after an extended absence from WWI subjects, I've decided to jump back in with a tiny Albatros from Jasta 18. I'll be using the Roden kit, Pheon and Aviattic decals, Barracuda wheels, and that's about it. This (I hope), will be finished by September 2015, for the regional here, hosted by my home IPMS chapter.

A lovely choice, Kevin. I'm really looking forward to seeing the outcome. Good luck.
Best wishes,
Nigel

Good luck in getting the cabane struts to fit properly.

Great to have you back, Kevin. I'm looking forward to following this build.

Why, are they a problem?

Thanks, Bud. I have several WWI projects to get back to, and more arriving all the time it seems like.
-
The cabane struts will need a little tweaking, the front ones are not quite the right length!
Ian

Welcome back Kevin, looking forward to seeing you get started on the Albatros.

I'll be on the watch for that then. Thanks,

Welcome back Kevin, looking forward to seeing you get started on the Albatros.
Des.
Thanks, Des. I sort of fell out of the WWI scene for a few months, but I now have a renewed interest.

Kevin,
Good to see you back! I am looking forward to seeing your work on this kit! Glad the Spark has ignited again!!

I'm looking forward to this build very much!

Nice choice, Kevin. You can't go wrong with an Albatros. Is your Jasta 18
Alby going to be marked as one of the Raven models or a blue and red one?
Looking forward to following your build. :)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Red and white, with Ravens and the black fuselage bands. Such a cool looking machine.
-
The one photo I have of this particular machine does not seem to show an over-painted earlier style cross; anyone know for sure?
-
I've decided to add a hanger (partial) to the base for this effort, so tonight I began making a mockup; still needs to be refined. In fact I'll probably build it again with several changes.

-
I've decided that since I'll be doing several WWI German fighters in 1:72 scale, to go ahead and build a generic aerodrome base that will allow for the rotation of said fighters. Here's the preliminary concept drawing.
-
Awesome drawing, and a great idea to build this for a rotating display sir!
Warren
-
Thanks, Warren. I see no reason to build several bases, so one really decent one seemed a better approach. I'll leave the back side of the hangar open, with some trusses, crates, lights, benches and stuff placed inside.
-
Looks like a great plan! I am looking forward to seeing the results!

I think I shall steal this idea and do one myself. 8)

If you (or anyone else), can benefit, so much the better.

Great concept! I am looking forward to this one...
Although I have not found it in this forum it may be well known, but if not,
you might want to check the "Richthofen Film (1919)", specially from minute 28, here

I had seen it before, but it'd been quite awhile, so I'd completely forgotten about the hangar scenes. Thanks, it gives me a couple of ideas.
-
Work continues on the hangar, with the interior now beginning to slowly take shape. The framing methods may not be true to the era, but I’m just winging it here, so to speak. The small workbench is one of two or three that I'll add.
-
OK, not a lot happening here, but at least a little progress, with upper wing now being base coated, and ready for pre-decal weathering, (after some minor corrections to finish).
-
As is typical for me here of late, I've went ahead and rushed into making the fold down doors, but have messed up the proportions, so I'll be redoing them. I'm not real sure why I always seem to be in such a hurry.

Kevin,
On a quasi-related note, I was reading Imries The Fokker Triplane this afternoon after the Thanksgiving feed, and in it he says that Richthofen demanded wooden hangars for JG1 in November of 1917 because of the problems of keeping a/c dry in Flanders, etc.
Just a tidbit I thought you'd like in light of your hangar project.
FWIW,
Warren
-
Interesting indeed. I have that Triplane book (as well as others), but never read it. I have eyeballed all the photos to death though, the Dr.I being one of my two WWI favorites.
-
It's in the chapter on structural failure, p. 47. One of my favorites too.
Warren
-
I like these too. Both are excellent.

-
I thought about picking up the Leaman book when it came out, but didn't due to mixed reviews. I went to check the other day on Amazon, and it's price is way out of the roof. I do have the GvW Datafile special pictured and the regular DF also I believe.
They're all good refs IMHO.
Warren
-
Yep, not cheap. I buy books as I can, and just figure the photos are really what I'm after anyway, so I don't bother with reviews too much.
Most (but not all) of the internal framing is now complete. Now I need to build a stove, and add some electric lights and panels, as well as some columns with knee braces.
-
I also went ahead and made a maintenance stand for the spare Roden engine, but it's pretty rough, and a tad too small. I figure to have it off to the side, inside the hangar. (35mm film canister lid just for scale reference.)

Wood stove begins to take shape. (It may be a tad oversized, I don't know if I'm all that happy with it.)

I really like all of the details you're putting into your hangar, I plan on doing the same. Don't worry about the stove. Until someone comes up with an original Luftstreitkrafte issue stove, with measurements, I'd say you're good to go. ;)
Warren
-
You're probably right, Warren. It's not really as huge as it appears, as I zoomed in on it.
-
Great job. I have been following with great interest the work from the very beginning and I can say that will get a great diorama. Keep up the good work and I will look forward to your next post.
best wishes

Thank you. I'm having so much fun with this project, it's just that much different from my "other" stuff.
-
Some paint slopped on. Once given the wood treatment with oils, interior should look OK I think. (I don't know where the vent for the stove is going to exit the building yet, so I just stubbed up a short piece for now.)

Really taking shape well, Kevin! Well done. :D

Thanks, fellas, I'm having lots of fun with this effort.
-
Great work! Very clean and precise building on the hangar and the accessories.
I've also planned a Jasta 18 Albatros D-V for the coming months, starting from the same box which is the best one at 1/72 scale in my opinion. I just love the look of these red and white Albies...
-
I agree, the markings are quite attractive, and I'll undoubtedly be doing more; at least two D.VII's and one Dr.I
-
Jasta 18 also flew some of the most beautiful Pfalz D-III's, one of the best known being Hans Müller's machine.
-

I'm not familiar with that one, I'll have to look it up. I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet, so to speak, so I've now ordered the Pheon 72016 sheet, "Raben's Ravens". Now I just need to order some Aviattic lozenge sheets. There doesn't seem to be a lot of AM for these tiny machines, and perhaps that's a good thing.
-
As for the aftermarket, in my opinion the Roden D-V/Va requires a sheet of PE seatbelts, and a pair of decent Spandaus.
-
OK,admittedly this photo doesn't look it, but the overall effect of the oils added is OK with me, creating an interesting wood "feel", that looks much better in person than it does in this photo.

Thanks very much, fellas, I appreciate it. I still haven't gotten myself to the LHS for the corrugated siding, but once I do, I should be able to then wrap up the hanger.

You got a bit distracted from the Albatros, didn't you?

Yep, that's an all too frequent occurrence with me I'm afraid. (I'm presently working on two Albatros, one 1:72 Gato class sub, and a 1:6 Flak 38, to list but a few.)

Don't feel badly, I currently have these in the pipeline: an A6M2 Type 11 Zero, an A6M2 type 21, an A6M3 type 32, a MAC SPAD VII C.1, a Flashback Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, and two Eduard Nie.17's. So, yeah . . . . I get that way too.

Nice work on the hangar...but what happened to the Albatros build? Maybe a change in heading is called for? ;)

I see your point, but mostly what draws me to this project at the moment, is working on the hanger for it. After all, it's sort of a package deal. Rowan has shipped me the Jasta 18 sheet, so once received, that should kick me in the right direction, (I hope).
-
The Albie needs a place to roost after all, right?
Warren
-

Warren
Absolutely. And the D,VII's and Dr.I's to follow as well.
-
Owing to some Christmas cash that came my way, I was finally able to get some badly needed supplies, including enough material to finish off this little hanger. To this end, I’ve now added the corrugated siding. Tomorrow I’ll make some additional truss work, and get started on the roof.
-
Good to see you're still kicking on this one.
Warren
-
Oh yea, Warren, I'm still committed to this little project. Slamming together 1:72 fighters will be a snap after all this work on hanger and base is completed.
-
Working along at my usual glacial pace, I've been adding more siding, as well as cutting the convoluted roof sections, using scribed sheet to represent the roofing boards on the interior, which will also act as a substrate for the corrugated roofing sections. This may not be technically accurate, but I think I can live with that, as several other aspects of the framing are non standard too, though the modified king post truss is reasonably authentic. Naturally I couldn't get both pieces of roof from one sheet, so back to the LHS we go!

Kevin, I think it's looking great!
Warren
-
Thanks, Warren, I appreciate it. This was fun, the first (and only) complete truss that I'll have room for. With the roof line splaying out the way it has to, the opposite wall will not have enough room to receive a full truss end, so I may end up just building several full trusses, then nipping the ends off as required.
-
OK, exterior of hanger now given base coats. Once dry, I'll mask the battens and spray them as well.

The wait is over! My Pheon sheets finally arrived today, and they are every bit as nice as I've come to expect. There are at least three other Jasta 18 machines I want to do from these sheets, as well as #1.

Hopefully I'll be continuing work on both over the next month or two.

In fact how many aircrafts will join in the diorama.
Will look forward to the development of the project.

Interesting bit of work Kev. Looks good.

Thanks, fellas, I appreciate it a lot. I have so many irons in the fire right now. I hope to resume work on this next week some time, along with a 1:32 Albatros I'm also working on.
