The first ports of call for me at Telford were the Pheon, AVIATTIC and Gaspatch stands and there were some goodies on show and the chance to talk about new developments.
At Pheon,

Rowan, Sabine and David (? not in the shot) had a display showing off their latest decals and future releases,

including the three sets I bought.

Rowan kindly gave me a sample of some etched work in progress: window frames for the 1/32 Roland C.II, allowing them to be posed open, and a set relating to the high altitude oxygen equipment seen on some late German aircraft (though I think this may ultimately be produced in resin). Not ready yet but quite staggering were some wafer thin engine panels and etched wing rib tapes. The finesse on these seemed extraordinary to me but, ever the perfectionist, Rowan is working further on them. It was from Rowan that I was also able to buy a Blue Max 1/48 Sopwith Dolphin.
Next door at AVIATTIC , (with my apologies for missing the display cabinet slightly to the right)

Richard, Amanda and Harry (who arrived after the shot was taken) had some real surprises. Take a look at these shots of stripped down 1/32 Fokker D.VII fuselage and wings.

My camera can’t do credit to this amazing work. A perfectionist, like Rowan, Richard sees scope for further improvement and it looks as if the final version may run the entire fuselage length. A tantalising prospect would for the rudder to be made available as a separate piece, thus making battle damage as easier prospect.
Also new was some Khaki finish linen on clear and on white decal paper which Richard said was very much a response to customer demand. The name Khaki does not, I think signify a very specific, exact or official colour, rather something which seemed to capture the feel of the sheets.
Unfortunately, the resin fuselage for the 1/32 Ansaldo Balilla A1 wasn’t delivered in time for display at Telford, but the following flyers showed what a beauty the kit promises to be. I think we can expect to see some highly distinctive box design which will surely include this artwork
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7555/15587975380_7a62007960_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pKss1d)IMG_5048 (https://flic.kr/p/pKss1d) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
And turning the flyer over....... Does this suggest another finish being available?
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/15587399178_4f1b49e516_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pKpuHG)IMG_5049 (https://flic.kr/p/pKpuHG) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
While chatting with Rowan and Richard, John Adams of Aeroclub Models turned up clutching a revised and improved version of his beautifully engineered metal assembly jig. This is a great tool for those working with 1/72 and many 1/48 scale wing/fuselage assemblies. The price sounds like it might be around £60 but is not available just yet.
Then on to Gaspatch and Costas and the team (one of whom is shown here).

The stand featured the superb Salmson 2A2. With a staggering array of different and amazingly detailed machine guns on sale, I think the most recent are 32062 and 32063 in the shot below – variations on the British Hyland.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5604/15587506038_911200c4f7_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pKq3u7)IMG_4890 (https://flic.kr/p/pKq3u7) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
We talked about the next model, which will be a Henschel 123, and Costas is going into fantastic detail to get this right. There is one other thing which I can’t resist showing you from the Gaspatch stand. If you’ve ever been frustrated by the one dimensional, limited, stilted poses of 1/350 scale naval crew, take a look at these gems
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7553/15153003704_ccfd60b44f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/p6275y)IMG_5002 (https://flic.kr/p/p6275y) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
I’ll try and put up more details of other things I saw in due course.
Best wishes

Thanks for this Nigel. Missed Telford this year. Just as well, as seeing this would have maxed my card out!!
-
The GasPatch Models deck crew are astonishing! You may need an electron microscope to paint them.
-
Thank you Nigel for posting these pictures, it is great to put a face to all the people we are dealing with, and the products on display are amazing, I think we are in for some wonderful times in 2015.

Thanks for your report Nigel, much appreciated!

Thanks for posting, Nigel! Looks like some wonderful stuff. Couldn't make Telford this year. :'( Hopefully next.
Cheers,

Looks like you had a really satisfying day Nigel.
Thanks,

Thank you, Nigel. I very much appreciate your posts.

Thanks for the pictures Nigel. This is great for those of us that
aren't able to get to the show.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thank you for the pics Nigel. I can see where more of my modeling budget will go now.

The tiny deckcrew is amazing. Absolutely amazing. Shipbuilders won't have to stick to those twodimensional pe-mannekens any longer. Brilliant news.

Thank you all for the positive comments and I do realise just how lucky I was to be able to take a short flight to the UK for the exhibition. Here are some extra shots which might be of interest, even if not all necessarily related to our first love.
First up, I have to comment on the number of bargains available with so many traders selling plastic kits. The most obvious example concerned the mighty Airfix 1/24 Typhoon. Frequently advertised at £99 or equivalent, it was available for less on a number of stands and at LAS Models it was on offer for a staggering £70; I imagine their stock lasted a matter of minutes. One of a number of stands offering hundreds of kits at excellent prices, I also found there an Eduard Weekend Edition Nieuport Ni-17 for £4 and various other Weekend Editions for £6 and £7. My heart said to buy the Nieuport; my head said to conserve your financial resources and it won out. Talking with one of the staff there, I understand that LAS will be closing in December, so I expect not to see them next year.
Talking of Airfix, they always have a large stand at Telford and this year’s new announcements, though less grand in scale than last year’s Typhoon, were nonetheless interesting. Unaccountably I took no photos. We have in 1/72 scale a Boulton Paul Defiant, a Heinkel He 111 and a whirly, twirly helicopter thingy that didn’t really interest me. Given modern technologies and the presence of a complete Defiant on display at the RAF Museum at Hendon, there should be no excuses now for inaccuracy and I noticed that particular care had been lavished on the canopy and turret transparency options. The Heinkel display notes suggested that it was based on more accurate scale plans than had previously been available.
More related to our sphere of interest, Cross and Cockade had their usual stand and, I’m delighted to say, Ena even asked me how much it would cost to join. Maybe I’ll get there soon.

Darren at Tommy’s War had these RAF/RFC vehicles on sale and display. I think we’ve already seen the packaging art, but what surprised a non-vehicle person like me was their size.

Talking of size, it’s become obvious over recent years that more and more models are being produced in larger scales. I have to declare no modelling interest in aircraft of the Luftwaffe but this Dornier Do 335 Pfeil in 1/32 scale coming soon from Hong Kong Models, seemed absolutely enormous.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5610/15594681477_e19f6be095_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pL3Puz)IMG_4887 (https://flic.kr/p/pL3Puz) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
But if you have a room available in which to display a single model, how about this 1/32 scale Lancaster which is in the planning from the same stable?
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7504/15594705157_f50f99fcdc_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pL3WwR)IMG_4871 (https://flic.kr/p/pL3WwR) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
Walking around the three-hall exhibition, it was so easy to get lost and at one point I found myself looking at the Aerobase trade stand on which a mighty 1/500 scale Eiffel Tower was being constructed from what looked like etched metal.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5615/15594609048_bbce5987a2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pL3rXN)IMG_4934 (https://flic.kr/p/pL3rXN) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
When I took the trouble to look at the rest of the stand I saw these little stripped-down aircraft from the days of early aviation which were, in the main, 1/160 scale. I didn’t ask any questions, fearing any distraction might lead to the Tower collapsing.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5611/15780034365_8b92c5a14a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/q3qNs2)IMG_4933 (https://flic.kr/p/q3qNs2) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
This prompted me to look at the Aerobase website, where I saw an array of stripped down early aviation models, ranging from a 1/48 scale Dr.I through to 1/160 palm of the hand models. The home page features a mighty airship.
My heart almost invariably sinks at the sight of yet another Tiger tank or battleship Bismarck, but I have to show you this from the HMV stand (a German company, I think); it was on display last year as well. I’m not sure if the model, which may be 1/200 scale, is still available, but take a close, close look. Would you believe that, apart from the rigging and presumably the railings, this Bismarck is made of card – as are all the other vessels you can see.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15160139904_e267acd654_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/p6DFqu)IMG_4926 (https://flic.kr/p/p6DFqu) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr
As a last shot, you may know that I like the Hawker Typhoon as an aircraft. West Riding (Leeds) IPMS Branch produced this display, skilfully using models from across the scale ranges. Unfortunately the camera does not capture things too well, but the effect was most impressive.
Well after this diversion, I’ll publish some more of the photos I took of Great War aircraft models put on display by IMPS branches and Special Interest Groups.
Best wishes

Thank you again Nigel for taking the time to post these additional photos. Man, I am so sorry that I could not attend the show, there are some absolutely amazing models and accessories out there. I am really keen on the Tommy's War Thornycroft Anti Aircraft truck and their Crossley tender, I think these may end up in my Christmas stocking.

Enormous thanks to you for uploading the fascinating photos from Telford which means we can finally feel we were there too! Its also great to put faces to names we know well on the Forum. The range of WW1 items and accessories is so tempting and hopefully will generate Christmas sales for the traders.
Any more photos available?
kind regards

Many thanks Nigel. Found the Model Show images and they are outstanding, what a motivation for WW1 modellers around the planet!
Enormous kudos to the WW1 Sig folk for their brilliant and thoughtful display- spectacular and well displayed.
Thanks to the kindness of Nigel all of us can enjoy the visual delights of Telford.
Telford's on my bucket list but my wilting credit card says not yet because it knows what I'm like in a vendor room!

Yes, Thank you much for the great pics, and reporting from the show. So much to see.

Thanks for posting Nigel,I forgot my camera in my excitement to get to the show. Some amazing stuff on display, didn't make the comp area, just didn't have the time,so thanks again for your other pictures.I got to speak to the guy on the card ships stand, yes he is German, from near Lubeck, and astonishingly, those railings are laser cut card!!!He was also telling me that a customer of his also makes his own railings from scratch out of stiff card!
Dave.
-
Ernie, Mark, Mike and Dave, thank you all for your kind words.
Mark, you'll have to let us know what you make of the Aerobase website. There is so much there beside their mighty Eiffel Tower.
You're right Dave about the amazing stuff at Telford. There's almost too much to take in and I frequently found myself asking which of the three halls I was in or how to get back to certain stands - even with the show guide. I saw on display the gorgeous new book of Albatros profiles (I can't remember the artists name but have seen mention of it here on the forum) and completely forgot to take any photos or to ask if it was published and for sale.
You've now blown my mind telling me that the Bismarck etc railing was laser cut card and that someone also makes his own from stiff card.
It was also reassuring though that amongst the many works of art on display, there was also lots to see in the branch displays etc made by mere mortals like ourselves.
Best wishes

Hello Nigel:
I scoped out the Aerobase Website, lots of stuff, but it all seems so small. They have two sizes of Eiffel tower. That would make a neat conversation piece in the living room.

Indeed Mark. What did you make of the strip down Fokker Dr.I ?
Stefan, Bo, I cannot speak too highly of the Albatros profiles I saw from Dave Douglass. Sorry I missed them from my original report.

Yeah, Dave is a super talented guy. Several years ago I was involved in a crowd sourced combat flight sim called "TargetWare" -- Dave was a skinner who invariably delivered top notch, super well researched stuff.
-
Nige,
The strip down looks like a great idea, and would give modellers a huge burst of new ideas.

Great stuff and thank you Niggle for sharing your visit. Looking at your photos first thing came to mind was Oh my dear wallet :( there are several things I can see that I really would love to have but since Christmas is around the corner I must wait at think of the others members in family first. Hopefully, by the time I get to purchase them they will be still available :)
Thanks again for sharing ;)

Nigel,
Just found this thread. Many thanks for your report. I've been to Telford more often than even I expected, and I still look forward to the next sojourn. Good to see Sabine, Rowan and Richard again, even if only in your excellent photos! 8)
