Title: Nieuport 17 Academy 1:32
Post by: Adam on November 09, 2014, 04:25:30 AM
I bought this kit to celebrate the birth of my grandson.  ;D

On his birthday, I went to the shop model and asked what models of World War I in 1:32 scale are available, there was only this one,

so I bought it.

At home I looked in the box and I saw, what I bought.

Cabin equipment, actually does not exist.
I bought also GasPatch Vickers.  :)

Initially I wanted to do scratch cockpit.

My colleagues in Poland, he advised me to buy Mastercasters cockpit resin. After a few days I had it at home.

Now my struggle with the cockpit.

After assembling the cockpit looks so.

 :(

I have mixed feelings about whether it was worth it to buy it, is too narrow, and I think the quality is not satisfactory.

I also have the engine cover, and also pointed out that it is too narrow. So I wonder if you do not cut it in one place and insert a thin strip of plastic.

I'm thinking also to adopt Rodens engine

I'm rereading very carefully this thread:

http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=4255.0

Maybe I will find there better solution of my problem.

Adam.

Congratulations on the arrival of your grandson! As for the Nieuport, it's
a really good start, Adam. :D  Your cockpit area is great and I'm sure you
will be able to make it fit well.  Your wood colour is first rate.  I look
forward to the next updates.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Congratulations on the birth of your Grandson, he is a beautiful looking baby.

Sorry to hear that the Master Casters cockpit set didn't work for you, I have this same kit and was considering purchasing the set but after reading yours and other reports I won't waste my money, I will scratch build the entire cockpit myself. Looking forward to following along with your build, this will give me a heads-up for when I want to build mine.

That is one very handsome little man in the opening photo Adam, congratulations on a beautiful Grandson!
Every time I start to think the Master Casters Set can't be all that bad I see another review like yours so I'm now convinced, like Des, to not bother with it. I've got the Hobby Craft Ni17 and I'll be scratch Building the interior. I sure hope you can solve the fit problem on yours.
Cheers,
Lance

Hallo Adam, congrats also from me for your grandson!

We already exchanged some imoressions in my Francesco Baracca's thread about the Master Caster set.
I am curious about the

I bought also GasPatch Vicker as you did.

What about the engine? Did you use the kit's engine as it is?
Is the Roden's engine you quote  an engine sold on its own?
Title: Re: Nieuport 17 Academy 1:32
Post by: Adam on November 09, 2014, 09:42:14 PM
Thank you for the wishes, my friends.
Now my grandson is a half year old man.  ;D

Antonio I think I disassemble the cockpit and will use part of it to build a new cockpit.
This engine is a from the model Fokker Dr.I (for this model I bought a resin from Vector), but I also have a model Nieuport 24 Bis and his engine looks identical, because Oberursel engine is a copy of Le Rhone. Yet not watched carefully it if there are any significant differences.
This may be a problem with the fit it to the cover, the resin and the original are a little too big. As I wrote, I want to cut in one place the resin cover and insert the plastic strip and see if the engine will fit.
I'll try to take pictures of this engine and covers, but later, because on Wednesday I'm going to Brussels to visit the other grandson, who is now three weeks old man.  ;D
If I find time there, it'll go to the Army Museum in Brussels, there is the original Nieuport 17 and maybe I will do some photos, and how will I be allowed to go behind  the rope that would make pictures of the cockpit.

Adam.

Adam,
Back in the "old days" of the internet, when I belonged to the "WWI Modeling List" (the first group I joined when I got connected back in the 90's) one of the members posted a series of interior shots of the Belgian Nie.23 while it was undergoing restoration. I can't remember if Allan Wright of Sanjeev posted them to the WWI Modeling Page archives, or if it was on the member's personal website, but in any event, I can't find them now. (Somebody who was there then help me out here. I think it was Daniel Clamont.)

I know these are not photos of an original interior (even though there are NO original Nieuports out there that haven't been messed with) but Mark Miller's work is good IMHO:

http://www.wwi-models.org/Images/Miller/render/Nieuport/

I fell in love with both the Nie.11/16 and Nie.17 years ago.  I normally try to model in 1/72nd, but I've thought of picking up this kit because of the subject matter. I'm so disappointed to hear of the fit and quality issues of that cockpit set.

HTH!

Hello to all,
So, two reasons to congratulate: a nice grandson and a good kit choice.  ;)
I did it lats year and I scratched all the cockpit (I didn't know about resin set) with Tom modelworks PE.
It starts very well.
Best regards.
Alain.

It's a pity that the MasterCaster's set is so disappointing. Another example of waisting resources for aftermarket parts that have to be detailed extensively to come up to an acceptable standard.

Friends once more thank you for your good wishes.  :)
Waren last week I was in the Army Museum in Brussels, and had the pleasure to to see and do a few photographs of this aircraft. Unfortunately, it was fenced with ropes and I was not allowed to take pictures beyond ropes.  :(
Only such pictures I can made.

Here you can see that the ammunition box is made of wood, not from aluminum  as is shown on the Millers drawings.

Alain on the use of PE is now late, now I  think that I will use resin components for cockpit .

Now I started to work on the engine cover.
I cut the shield in one place and I made place to the strengthening of the wire.

I put spacers.

I put wire rods.

Now it's time for a two-component adhesive.

Now cover looks much better.

I will fill the gap with resin.

Adam.

A lot of time has passed since my last entry here.  :'(
In my workshop for a time lived my aunt because she broke her leg and we had to take care of her.
But I have not lost my the time completely.
At that time, I tried to encourage my grandson to modeling.  ;D

I studied the history of aviation WWI.  ;)

Now my aunt now can walk and my workshop is free.  ;D
So I can continue my struggle with my Nieuport.
I finished interior milling the engine cowling.

Success, engine fit in the cover.

Next step fixing engine to the fuselage.

I made place in the cockpit for engine axis.

Unfortunately, there OCCURS a small disaster. Fell off the front wall.  :-\

Then I remembered that on the pictures which I've done in the Army Museum in Brussels, is seen that the ammunition container is a wooden . So it will be easier to paint it.  :)

Hi Adam,
Glad to see another Nieuport builder and sorry I'm late to this thread as I may have had some ideas for you but you are already past the point of no return.  I remember reading years ago that the forward fuselage was too wide on the Hobbycraft/Academy kit, and a narrow wedge should be cut out of the fuselage top and bottom and it should be clamped and glued together, maybe that is why the resin cowl would not fit.  It would make sense, unless the resin cowl was not round to start with.  Also for the resin interior for best fit I would sand the outside of the inner walls thinner then glue the walls directly to the fuselage. this would give you the best fit as the floor can be added later and shimmed a little wider if needed to fit properly.
I have a link to the Nieuport 23 photos someplace so let me see what I can find...

Thank you RAGIII and Des.
I have not had much time to work on my Nieuport. Two weeks I was on holiday and the next two weeks on a business trip.
The current status of work on the Nieuport is as follows.
Cockpit is glued to the fuselage.

Elevator was cut off.

I also cut off the ailerons.

Fuselage is already glued.

Some parts are ready for surfacer.

Last two days I spend with surfacer.  ;)
Unfortunately I can not show you the result, because I lost the photo camera cable. It hid somewhere in the house and it looks how I'm looking for it.  ;) >:(.

RAGIII and Warren thank you for the good words.  :)

Now I'm getting down to painting the wings. They will paint green and brown camouflage with a silver border. I have question for you whether the camouflage was painted with a brush or spray gun?
I watched the images and there I saw rather the sharp border between colors, which would indicate that wings was painted by brush.
Is the subject experts can help you?

Adam.

Adam,
I believe the latest research indicates that the camouflaged Nieuport 17's had a blue border, and I think the camouflage was sprayed.

Warren is correct, Alan Toelle did a 2 part article in Windsock International Vol. 23 No. 5 & 6, on Nieuport Camouflage of 1916.  A couple of things to note from this article, the camouflage colors were sprayed on at the Nieuport factory.  they used a paint called Ripolin, which is an oil based paint, as the dopes of the time could not be sprayed on.  Also the Ripolin dried very glossy, so for a scale model I would use a semi-gloss clear as a high gloss would make it look toylike, while a dullcoat would not be correct either.  He also talks about the contrasting borders, which are interesting as in some photos they appear white, while in others of the same plane they appear dark.  This is based on the reflection of sunlight and he concludes that blue is the only color that would vary so much on the orthochromatic film.  It also appears that 4 different camouflage colors were used on the upper surfaces, and a light sky blue was used on the lower surfaces of the later camouflaged Nieuports, including the early Nieuport 17.  But this was a time of rapid changes, and the aluminum doped Nieuports were soon issued, making the sprayed on camouflaged planes "old fashioned".  So it has never been determined if the Nieuport 17 used by Guynemer with the aluminum fuselage and camouflaged wings was something the factory was trying out, or if wings from an older camouflaged plane were put on the newer fuselage due to damage of the original aluminum wings.  In this case it would be assumed that the wings would have the sky blue undersides and the horizon blue outlines and strut binding tapes.  No one can tell for sure but here is my take on the scheme around ten years ago, I would now conclude that there should be a lighter green and a red-brown in the camouflage colors on the wings, and a semi-gloss finish.

Warren and Dave, thank you for your advices.
Dave, if I understood you well, wings were painted by brush.
You write that green should be lighter. In the instructions are such paint colors, dark brown Fs30099 and dark green Fs 34258. I'm using Lifecolor paints, these colors look like that.

In my opinion the green is a little to light.

I'm not sure if brown is also correct.

Hi Adam,
Camouflage colors were sprayed, the blue outlines were painted by brush.  The colors of the camouflage are hard to determine since there may have been 4 different colors, here is a link to some comments on the early Nieuport colors:

there is a website  who put on line all a military pics collection done by the french army: le fond Valois:
there are here splendid pics (just write Nieuport in search and you will see)...
[type]=_all&adv[0][value][0]=&view=list&sort=_score%3Adesc&subquery=&search-query=1]http://argonnaute.u-paris10.fr/search?query=nieuport&search-query=&adv[0][type]=_all&adv[0][value][0]=&view=list&sort=_score%3Adesc&subquery=&search-query=1 (http://argonnaute.u-paris10.fr/search?query=nieuport&search-query=&adv[0)

Well in this collection, there is a draw of workers painting cockade with brush...

This picture is taken in Salmson factory:

zooming we see that workers are using brushes to paint the wings...

Hi Xan, did you read the article from Alan Toelle?  He says that the Nieuport factory used ripolin (oil based paint) sprayed at the factory, the dopes were not used on the early Nieuport camouflage because they could not be sprayed.  Also the Salmson production would have been later, probably by then they were doing the aluminized dopes which were applied with a brush.

Hi Xan,
You are correct Salmsons and SPADS from 1917-1918 were brush painted with the 5 color French camouflage made up of pigmented dope mixed with aluminum powder.  so they have a hard edge between the camouflage colors.  This was also how the insignia was applied to the wings.  Unfortunately Adam is doing a camouflaged Nieuport from 1916 so this would not apply, as these aircraft were finished with Ripolin paint sprayed on at the factory.  I do not wish to confuse Adam as to what is correct for the Nieuport he is modeling, but thanks for sharing these great photos.
Hope this clears up any confusion.
Dave

Nice drawing Xan,  only the camouflage colors were sprayed on, the cockades and the outlines of the wings would have been done with brush of course as well as the stencils on the ailerons and wing with the serial #.

The wings were painted, but  I put the masks strip on the silver surfaces. Then I learned that this strip was painted blue.

So the nest step is painting blue strip.

I think this strip is a little too wide, but I'll leave it, because I would have to paint again whole wings.

I decided to raise the bar itself and decided to paint cockades, using masks
So I bought a pair of compasses and sheets Montex masks.
At the beginning of the test was painting.

When I was cutting the smallest wheels, I noticed that part of it is not cut to the end, I tried to fix my problem but to no avail.

Now red color.

The result is not as expected but I will use mask.
Firstly badly painted the center.
This error is correctable, I will have to cut out the circle carefully .
Now  I cut down mask and it was glued on the wing.
Tonight I will start painting.

Adam.

I like that blue Adam, which brand of paint and what color is it?

Good job so far!  I was thinking of trying to make some masks for roundels, but in 1/72nd, I wonder if I might be better off painting decal paper and cutting them out.  Thoughts?

I love the blue tone as well, I think the center blue disc on French cockades decals is often too light, yours appears a good shade...

Fine modelling, Adam.
As for the masked cockades, surely, practice makes master. But still, one needs an extremely steady hand in cutting nice round circles. Something I always find challenging. I wish you good luck with yours!

Thank you for your support my friends, with my new painting technique by using masks made by myself.

WarrenD I'm using Lifecolor paints this blue is Matt Light Blue,

Przemol, I'm on the beginning on the road of masking technique this is my second model, first was Fokker Dr.I. There I used original Montex mask for crosses, and I MADE MY SELF   ;D masks for white-black checkers.

Tonight I painted cockades.  ;D . I'm pleased with my painting, but it will require a little retouching.
If I will find the time in this Eastern time  I will put in here some pictures.

Sorry for such a long break.
Lately I've been very busy professionals and families.
I had only as short periods of time to build my model.
From time to time I made only a few pictures of my struggles.
My painting by masks.

Thank you very much for your opinions.  ;D
With this model, I spent a lot of time, I had to overcome many problems.  ;)
Work on it was interrupted by many events of personal and related to work.
Finally, the model is finished and I love it.  ;D
Now there will be a break in modeling WW I.  :o
Some time ago I walked into my model shop to buy the paint to Nieuport 17 and I went out with this model.

US aircraft models from the Vietnam war is the second part of my modeling.
But as I finish it I promise to complete the Fokker D.VII, which long ago I began.
