Title: St Andrew's Cross spider
Post by: Des on November 06, 2014, 09:41:07 AM
Went out into my backyard this morning to a bit of watering and saw this beautiful spider in my tree fern, it's called a St Andrew's Cross spider, had to take a photo of it, it is quite large but harmless but they display wonderful colours.

Wow!  What a beauty, Des!  How large do you reckon his leg span to be?  I'm amazed that he's harmless.  Must be one of the few critters in Oz that won't kill you.  Have you put it to the test?
Cheers,
Bud

The span from the tip of his/her rear legs to the tip of the opposing front leg is 70mm, and no, I haven't put it to the test to see if it is harmless  ???, I trust what is written about it.

I can live with Grizzly Bears, Cougars, and Grey Wolves but that fellow I'd like to keep at a great distance, Er, like a hemisphere away! :o Makes my photos of the two moose in my yard last Winter look pretty routine!
Be careful out there Des!
Cheers,
Lance

It looks more like a Rasta spider, with that "hat"!

I can see where it gets the name from, unusual looking web too. I'll stick with the little ones we get in the UK though.

I agree with TomR - although I must admit that I do quite like spiders…… they are fascinating beasts.

You may have a much warmer climate down under but I'm happy to stick with rainy old England if it means not having huge spiders, harmless or otherwise!  :o
