I have started the new project - the kit is well known
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/salmson/wnw32038reviewrb_1_zps85a27ad5.jpg)
I am planning to build the model of one of Polish Salmsons which flew to Poland after WW1 from France with the army commanded by General Józef Haller. The aircraft is known from two photos showing it after a forced landing.

For the markings I will use decals from Pheon Models, generously donated some time ago by Rowan - many thanks my friend, once more!
The past over two weeks I spent assembling the cockpit and finished it just a moment ago. It is now ready to be buried in the fuselage. I did not add almost anything to the kit, except for the rigging. I focused mainly on the areas which will be visible through the pilot and observer openings.

A very impressive start PrzemoL.
Best wishes
Nigel

Very pretty!
-
Wow! This is the first build of this kit I've seen and it is most impressive. Bravo! And I love that blue! Very unexpected.
I look forward to more.
Cheers from NYC,
Michael
-
Wonderful, so typical of your work !
ED
-
Thanks folks, for your nice words.
Michael, mine is not the first Salmson build here. Not to look for too far away - Chris Johnson is making very fine progress, building a lovely model in parallel, being a few steps in front of me. And that crazy blue on the tank top, without any staining and wash will not be visible. The remaining blue zones, which will be visible through the cockpit openings got some toning-down.
-
Off to an excellent start and impressive rigging 8)
Terri

Prze,
That is magnificent work, as usual. Your woodwork is simply spectacular!
Cheers,
Lance

Exceptional work Przemol, the colours and your wood is brilliant, the rigging is very well done.
Des.

Truly brilliant work on the innards, Prez! Looking forward to seeing her in her colorful Polish garb.

very nice work so far przemol, looks great. i like the blue accents in the pit.

Prez,
You never fail to impress me.
Beautiful!

So glad, also YOU are giving this one a try, PrzemoL!
Richard
-
Really nice - you have a hand for painting wood. One question: The seatbelts, are those the ones provided with the kit?
Stefan
-
Thank you, everybody. I am glad my build has so many faithful followers ;)
Stefan, I used kit seatbelts, opting for the waist version, not the four point harness. It is my 8th WNW kit, so I have already learned, that their PE elements are very stiff and cry for annealing before handling them. After a session in a flame of my kitchen cooker they subdued nicely to gentle bending to the seat shape. Then a CDL colour (I did not fancy that funny WNW idea of light green belts) airbrushed on, some silver paint on the clamps, a brown wash, a varnish and... done.
-
..............and another question Prze, if I may, your painting is always so clean and realistic, ........What type of paint do you use? ???
Cheers,
Lance
-
A very pretty start.
Martin
-
Just getting caught up, Prze. I have always admired your
work in the teeny scale, but in something this big, your
talents are really shining! The woodwork is beautiful and
what a great job on the interior rigging. This build is going to
be a joy to follow. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Yours woodwork, as usual, is great and realistic.
Adam.
-
Thank you, gentlemen.
Lance, I use acrylic paints, mostly Pactra, also more and more Vallejo, and metallic colours are from old Citadel range.
The last photo before the fuselage got closed.

Now the fuselage halves are glued together. My view here differs much from Chris' opinion - I will have to do a noticable amount of filling and sanding, especially on the bottom side. There may not be a slot but a groove is there, due to slight tapering of the plastic along the edges. Some photos will come later.
-

That is interesting - I doubt there are differences in the molds, so the difference has to come from the way both Chris and you worked on the kits (the difference has to come from somehwere, right?). I hope there won't be a heavy impact wrt to misalignment of wings etc., during later stages.
Stefan
-
Stefan, I do not think this will result in any misalignment. There areno gaps or slots, I only notice uneven surface, a groove along the joint which I will fill flush with the surface. I must admit, I have always problems with gluing fuselage halves, i.e. applying the glue along longish mating surfaces. Even in the kits so nicely engineered as WNW ones I am almost always working with filler along the joints.
-
This is really a joy to follow, Prze, and the suggestions and techniques mentioned are so helpful. Thanks for explaining the blue.
I have plans to do an Otsu but that is well down the line. Your and Chris' builds will definitely be both inspirational and helpful.
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Prez,
First your interior is terrific as always! The clean and crisp construction, bracing wires, and painting are Very Impressive! As for the troubles with fuselage seams I too tend to struggle with my construction. Seems the molds are always off leaving the bottom right higher and the upper left higher ::) Actually WNW has almost eliminated that issue for me but I still struggle with Roden and others.
RAGIII
-
Like Rick interior is terrefic.
Martin
-
WOW! What a beautiful job you're doing here Prez. I've been a bit remiss in visiting the forum for past couple of weeks and I missed the start of your build log but I have it bookmarked now and will be following along to see how this kit should really be built. I think I'll hold back on mine to reap the benefit of your build. I don't know why this aircraft doesn't get much love compared to other two seaters when she's so much more graceful looking.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Thank you, everybody. For watching and kind words.
Chris, I am flattered. And quite undeservedly. It is your build that I would like to follow. So do not pause it, please. ;)
I have done some modelling on my Salmson, though.
First of all, the decking is on. Again, I had some troubles with the joint, a little bit of delicate sanding was required. Doing this I had to sacrifice some fine rivet details, which I redid by drilling small holes which will get wash later on. I hope it will give enough impression of the lost rivets.
The front of the firewall got some dirt, however not much of it will be seen in my concept of engine opening - I will most probably leave the thin covers along the engine off. Thus, I plan to make the rigging in the bay right behind the engine, which may just be seen through the removed side panels. The eyelets for this are already there, just visible here.
Then was the Salmson 9z turn. The kit version of the 9 cylinder star is built from two halves with the seam line along all the cylinders - finely visible when viewed through the removed side panels. It was tricky to hide it, I tried to glue the halves as clean as possible, then used very liquid Tamiya glue pouring it along the seam at few locations where there was a gap, then some fine sanding was done which luckily did not spoil too much of the surface the detail. The final effect is quite satisfactory, though the macro photography here is merciless. Especially for the engine bearer, which like the engine has to be built from two halves. In the real life the seam is almost invisible, here in the photo - quite opposite... :(
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/salmson/sal-42_zps5ab6b10b.jpg)
As you may just notice, I have added the electric wires - at the back from mags, and in the front - to the spark plugs. I also plan to add two fuel lines which (as far as I can make from the photos) run under the left upper longeron, then down along the bearer somewhere to the carburettor at the bottom of the engine. But this only after the engine jumps on its place.
Also the radiator with open shutters is ready to be installed.

stunning and Brilliant work on your engine and radiator!

Yes, macro-photography can be merciless - but I think that your engine looks really convincing. I like the amount of dirt and grime you applied.

Many thanks, everybody, for your kind words.
Now the engine is mounted, fitted with some extras (generator drive belt, fuel line and double rigging in the bay behind it - all will be barly visible when the covers will be on). Again, probably because of my clumsiness or tight fit tolerances, I had to take extra measures - the exhaust pipes coming in threes in the kit had to be separated from the radiator, cut into separate 9 pieces and glued again - I could not get them close enough to their outlets from the cylinders.

Dear friends, your welcome to my build is very, very kind. Many thanks for all the nice words I read above.
Now I wonder what would you say to my paintwork, especially the choice of colours... Anyway, here it is, just before the application of decals and shading of the upper surfaces (I am still thinking if I should also do some shading along the stringers on the fuselage).

In my colour selection I tried to find matching colours among Pactra and Vallejo acrylics to the FS codes given in the WNW instructions. Thus I got four upper side colours. Each of them was then differentiated in two versions by adding a drop of silver (or not) to get the paint and the dope. The resulting silverish hues may just be visible in the photos.
For the undersides I went for CDL (not light grey) and its darker version obtained by adding some Beige Brown.
Unluckily in the two photos of my model subject the wing checkboards are not visible. Rowan designed them for his decal set with side dimension 4.2cm against 5.0cm diameter French cockades. He suggested overpainting and leaving four tiny segments of the overpaint circle just visible at the sides of the checkboards. The top side cockades must have been covered by dark green paint, just as the rudder which is visible in the photos as uniformly dark around its checkboard. But then I was left with a choice for the underside overpaint. I went for light grey... It maybe full SF but it is going to be accompanied by the same level of SF in the equipment I plan to add to my model - the camera and wireless are already onboard and I will also add the twin-Lewis Tourelle ring, though the two photos show the a/c devoid of this armament...
Now you may crucify me!
-
I think your color choices are certainly close to perfect! I can see a difference in the lightest green on the fabric and paenel near the nose. Lovely work!
RAGIII
-
Not knowing a lot about WWI colors I still found your reasoning about the color choices to be logical. Besides, we all know that weathering, flying and even the light change the colors we see even between planes painted the same day, in the same factory with the same paints. The colors on the aircraft that we model can only be approximations of the real colors anyway, no matter what era the model represents.
To me, it looks convincing.... it looks like a WWI era aircraft.... and I am impressed with the way your colors blend into a unified whole rather than breaking up into different color blocks. I wonder if that has to do with the addition of silver and the silver sheen it gives each of the colors.
No crucifixion here, only well earned applause...
Bob
-
Very nice painting.
Martin
-
I am so impressed with the painting, Prze. The addition of the
silver changes things more than I thought it would and looks
absolutely wonderful! Thanks for the excellent tip, my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Beautiful colors !
Jacek
-
Superb airbrushing Prze. It's always interesting to see how different modellers interpret a colour scheme. No two are ever alike and that's what makes it fun. I think the contrast in your colours looks very good.
Are you using Vallejo Model Air or Model Color here and do you apply a primer coat first?
Cheers,
Chris
-
I'm glad you added the aluminum powder to the paint Prze. Some years ago Jim Landon gave me an electronic copy of Project Butterfly and some sticks dipped in paint that had been matched to the research. I've thought of adding the silver/aluminum powder to any future build of mine of French a/c, and you photos show the nice, authentic result that comes from that. I think it looks great!
Warren
-
Why should anyone crucify you? Your ability with the airbrush is stunning, the colour choices are very reasonable, so, where should be a problem?
I really really like the paint on the wings very much.
Stefan
-
I really like the colours, wat is the paint to silver ratio? 2:1, 3:1? If I remember correctly for the silver dope (silvergrau) of the Pfalz it was 2:1, is this soemthing similar?
I really like both Salmsons that are being built at the moment and the colour choices of the modellers. Both are gorgeous and makes me want to build one...and I will do so!
Best regards,
Sasho
-
Looking good Prze 8)
Terri
-
Absolutely beautiful, Prez. Those colors are exactly as I imagine them. The aluminum powder gives the colors that luminescence I've read of in various texts.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Again, many thanks, Lady and Gents, for your interest in my build log and your nice words.
Chris, as for Vallejo colours I do not care about the paint series, I use either Air or Color, depending on the colour fit only. For instance my beige is V.M.Air Marron Verde and dark grey is V.M.Color Verde Refractivo.
Sasho, I added a really tiny drop of silver to each colour. I was guided by the WNW instruction where the dopes differ from paints by 10% of silver paint added. I think the ratio I used was even smaller.
And I have progressed a bit during last days. The decals went on. Here I must regrettably state, I had enormous problems with Pheon Models decals. like I never experienced with them before. They tended not to adhere well, even though I sprayed the areas for their application with a clear gloss coat. The decals also tried to span every single concavity instead of conforming to them. It took me two hard days and several sessions of Microsol, pressing with various tools (rags, sticks, finger tips, etc.) until I finally got them in order, though I am still not fully satisfied. I suppose that the carrier film used by Fantasy Workshop is now much thicker, than it was some time ago.
Then I sealed the decals, applied the Aizu tape strips and shaded the areas along the ribs. Then I added some paint scratches using a silver pen and a needle to turn the roundish spots into ragged ones. These are now sealed and the last steps before the assembly will be: some wash to emphasize the surface details, some dirt around the engine covers and at the bottom and a satin varnish to the linen surfaces.

Sorry to read of your difficulties with the decals, Prez, but as Bo said, they look fantastic. Once again, your amazing skills prevail.

Hello PrzemoL,
I'm really shocked and concerned to read of your problems with the decals. Please can you send the remaining pieces of the decal sheet back to me, so that we can investigate the problem with the printers. I'll send a replacement set out straight away and reimburse your postage. I do wish that you had stopped as soon as you noticed a problem, so that we could have replaced them before you experienced so much difficulty. You mention the varnish might be different but this is not the case, as far as I know, although until we have the unused decals back to test, I wouldn't wish to speculate too much as to the cause. Suffice to say, I tested a random sample (as I do with all our decals) and found no problems when they arrived from the printers.
Aside from that (!) the model is looking very, very nice. Let's hope you don't have any more difficulties.
Rowan

As the others said, no sign I can see of your decal issues! Just your usual lovely results in shading and painting.
RAGIII

Thanks, gents. Well, I did what I could, the final result is acceptable.
Rowan, I am sorry to write so of your decals, no ill criticism meant, just a brief report from the build. I thank you very much for your kind offer, excellent customer service, as usual! But let us move this issue to emails.

With great pleasure we I watch your progress in the building of this beautiful model.

Your Salmson is shaping up beautifully Przemo! The colors are convincing and your weathering is excellent. I really like the Polish markings on this one. :D

Hello to all,
I'd just read all the pages of this post and ... waou !!! A very nice work, especially paint. I like it !! Congratulations !
Best regards.

Przemol.
As others hav said your build is incredibly good. Don't beat yourself up about colours etc. Its too easy to get too anal about things. Weeks of sun, weeks of rain. The mix on the day.
If you had issue with decals it really doesnt show and just be thankful they werent Roden decals (my attempt at a joke) ;)
Rowans response is what first class service is about. So Kudos to him. ;)

It's a superb work.
You made a beautiful paint job :)

Prze, your build is a joy to behold, even in this stage. You have

over how gorgeous your paint work is. Wow!

Hello Prez,
I have just gone through your build log. I knew I had to expect the best, but what I've seen here is really incredible! Your interior is so amazingly well done. The engine fabulous. I like the colours of the camo. Very well balanced. It is such a clean PrzemoL build as usual. You and Chris have made it so difficult for the modelers who are going to build this one in the future to come even nearby. Many congratulations. Keep on the extremely nice work.
Kind regards
Patrick

Your modelling skills are on such a high level that i fail to find something i wouldn't like, especially as you were able to succeed despite those decaling issues you reported.
Stefan

Great work, such talent, the shading shows thru even in the black areas !!!!!
Ed

Thank you, everybody. You are very kind :)
The work on the model is going on. I have more or less reached the stage of the monoplane.
The steps taken included:
- wash and varnish
- radiator tank and Vickers
- lower wings assembly
- tail feathers assembly + rigging and control lines (tricky thing, as Chris mentioned in his build log)
- tail skid, undercarriage struts, their rigging, wheels, fuel pump
- lower aileron controls and aerial

Now for the wing struts and the upper wing.

Hello to all,
Very beautiful painting !!! It's a real lesson ! I like especially difference between metal part and canvas one. Weathering is amazing too.
Best regards.
Alain.

beautiful painting Przemek!
-
It's not my favorite aircraft but you're work is excellent.
-
Prze, I am stunned by the beautiful attention to detail in
the painting and weathering of this gem. Wonderful pictures,
and an even better aid for those of me without your eye for
detail. Looking forward to the next update, my friend. :)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Prez,
An absolutely BEAUTIFUL paint job! The shading is subtle but highly effective! Like Ed said even the black! How do you manage to shade the black so effectively?

Fantastic work. Just fantastic. Really coming along nicely.

Dear Przemol,
are you now fully converted to the larger scale, or will you switch back to your 1/72 jewels after this one is finished?

Prze,
Magnificent paint work and superb detail as we've come to expect from your bench. This is going to be another stunning model, I'm looking forward to seeing the final photos soon.
Cheers,

Hello Prez:
You are doing an outstanding job on this very challenging model. I especially like your approach to the elevator bracing on the underside of the elevator. Not an easy task and yours looks great. The paint job is very convincing and looks equally outstanding. When I did mine, I used EZ line for the wing rigging and left the struts off. When the rigging was done, I popped the struts in without any problems. Looking forward to seeing you work through the build.
Best

Simply stunning Prze! In particular, your wheel covers and rib shading are exquisite. Your Salmson leads the way.
Cheers,
Chris

Thank you, everybody for your nice comments.
... Like Ed said even the black! How do you manage to shade the black so effectively?

It is an easy trick, Rick. The black is actually not black but a very dark grey (black lightened slightly by a mid grey). Then shading with clear-black mix gives a nice contrast :)
... are you now fully converted to the larger scale, or will you switch back to your 1/72 jewels after this one is finished?
Not fully, Stefan. I try to divide my modelling time between 32nd and 72nd. My recent builds were small Albatros D.II and Bristol Scout. After the Salmson I will probably build two more large ones (Felixstowe!!! :D). But then will be time for the brand new HRModels Pup and Choroszy FE.8.
I especially like your approach to the elevator bracing on the underside of the elevator. Not an easy task and yours looks great.
Mark, actually I had to make two attempts to the underside rigging. Originally I inserted Bob's eyelets to the holes prepared by WNW - inboard of the disk-like detail popping up from the tailplane surface. But then it turned out that rigging to them was impossible, the struts stood in the way. After some deliberation I decided to cheat a bit and drilled new holes outboard of those disks and inserted new four eyelets. Then it was possible to circumvent the struts.
When I did mine, I used EZ line for the wing rigging and left the struts off. When the rigging was done, I popped the struts in without any problems. Looking forward to seeing you work through the build.
Mark, I will not use EZ line, for the large scale I prefer structural rigging, made from the fishing line. So the struts will go first, then the upper wing and finally I will stiffen the structure with the cables. Photos will come soon... :)
...
Your Salmson leads the way.
Just after yours, Chris, just after yours. ;)
But many thanks, for your appreciation!

Just dropped in to catch up on this as I have not looked recently. I simply cannot believe that this is a plastic model - the painting is just so realistic that I had to look twice and then again…. This is a truly wonderful piece of artwork, never mind the modelling!
-
Wow.....I keep going back to the wheel covers.....really, really subtle but so believable. Congrats!

Thank you, again. Your fantastic comments are indeed what I need at the final stages of this build.
The recent steps were as follows:
- the interplane struts wood-painted, marouflage-decalled, varnished and then glued into sockets with the top wing put on without glue to control the geometry
- the four wireless aerials along the cabane struts
- the top wing; this time everything went smoothly, I am glad I did not mess up that 10 points of glueing (good omen in the light of Felixstowe build looming ;))
- the rigging of cabane and here I almost overestimated my skills with tweezers - I was really hard put to it to get those 12 cables tight
- the remaining rigging lines were almost a piece of cake
- a few bits on the nose (aiming devices, rear-view mirror, windscreens)
This is most surely the last in-progress report. I am left with the observer's guns and the additional external wind-driven generator visible on the starboard lower wing in one of the photos of my Salmson. Thank you for watching and supporting me!

Hi Przemo,
This is such a gorgeous build. It seems with every build you do, you raise your skills a bit higher, and I wonder where all this is going to end. It is a real promotion for the Salmson aircraft and I think many modelers will be thinking now to start their build too. Wonderful!
Kind regards
Patrick

Beautiful work :o :o :o :o

In the home stretch now Prze. You've done an outstanding job with your Salmson.

Congratulations Przemol, well made Salmson. Post-war period is not what excites me much but I still have a soft spot for a white-red checkerboards.

Expertly executed.

Excellent work Przemek!
-
Again, many thanks for your kind words!
And the build is completed. Thank you, also, for your nice company in this journey, especially to Chris for his parallel build, to guitarlute for his recently restarted build and most especially to Rowan for making it possible to build this model in Polish markings (by producing and generously presenting me the fine decal set!).
As usual, one photo here, more in the gallery.
