Title: WNW Roland DVIb
Post by: nmroberto on October 18, 2014, 04:55:32 AM
Ok, my Roland arrived a few days ago, from what I can see so far, it looks like a super kit.
I decided (I think) to build this one. Started on the engine, still have some to do on it.

Got started on the cockpit. Painted the interior planking, assembled and painted the seat, dash and other interior stuff. Trial fit on the cockpit to the fuselage. Seems to fit pretty well. No where as fussy a fit as on the Fokker DVII.

Got the fuselage buttened up and I'm starting on painting the planking.

Started off with a base color of Tamiya XF3 flat yellow and XF59 about 50:50. I'm trying to get a fairly light wood color over all.

(http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b568/nmroberto/RolandDVIb004_zpse8abf69e.jpg) (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/nmroberto/media/RolandDVIb004_zpse8abf69e.jpg.html)

Next is a subtle under coating of Burnt Sienna oil paint.  Once that's dry I'll start my attempt at wood grain. If that doesn't work out, I guess the paint job will become a camo scheme.

You are making great progress Robert, the interior and the engine are excellent, and you fuselage wood is starting to take shape nicely, good luck with your wood grain.

I painted the fuselage planking, don't know how good it looks but it's gonna have to do. I tried to keep the wood grain very fine so it looks to scale, unfortunately it's hard to see.  I used artist oils  burnt sienna, yellow ochre, white, and cad. yellow for the different shades. Applied with a very small stiff artist brush.

Also started on the painting and decals.

Some of the photos aren't too great but it gives an idea of what everything looks like.

Crap.....looks like photobucket didn't get all my uploads, I'll try again later.

A little more progress.

Using Aviattic tailored faded lozenge decals,  with linen rib tape.  First time I have used the Aviattic decals and they are superb.  They fit perfectly, go on easily and look great. They even have a fabric texture look with is impressive.

I'm also using Gaspatch turnbuckles for the first time. I think they are going to look great when I'm finished.

At least two things will be first class on my Roland, don't know aout the rest.

I also rigged the rudder and elevator, and installed some turnbuckles on the fuselage.

Hello Robert:

You have done an outstanding job on this to date.  The engine, the wood, decal work, (the Aviattic Lozenge set looks great).  This is turning out to be quite an attractive model.

Best

Hi Roberto,

i like the chosen color scheme a lot, also you're wood grain effect look's fabulous.
Great choise on the Aviatic decals, they look really realistic.

I'm very curious for the end result, the Roland is a very nice airplane, and you're model will do justice to the real one.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.  It's a long way from perfect but it's probably the best I have ever done.  I was concerned about the wood work on the fuselage, but I think it came out OK.

I really enjoyed doing the rigging because of the Gaspatch turnbuckles and the micro tube. Now I actually like rigging.

I'd like to thank everyone on the board for the great hints and tips to make a better model.

Lovely stuff. Getting the woodgrain on the fuselage planking to look authentic is a tough one. I'm glad to see that the Aviattic decals worked so well as I've just ordered the same - must move my Roland to next in the queue based on this effort. Same scheme too.

Best wishes,

GrahamB
