This post is a little premature, I ordered the FE.2b from WnW yesterday, I received an e-mail this morning saying that it had been sent, whilst I'm waiting for delivery, are there any problems or pitfalls with the kit, but knowing WnW's precision and attention to detail I don't expect any.
I am hoping to build one of the 100 Sqn. builds because when I worked at RAF Whyton in Cambridgeshire the 'Glorious Ton' were stationed there.
I will be following the builds on here with great interest.
Cheers
Pete.
-
Good luck, it's been a great kit so far, but in the interest of balance on the forum you should have bought the Early version ;)
-
Well done Pete great choice! I've only put the fuse together so can't comment on the rest of the kit apart from the fact that all parts fitting tolerences are very tight!
I had trouble buttoning up the fuselage but it could be the way that I assembled my parts. There is also a known or well documented problem with the fit of the large wood piece B24 that sits in the pilots cockpit in front of the radiator. The part once glued in place leaves some very obvious join lines and really needs to be puttied and sanded once the whole cockpit is assembled. This is very difficult to achive a good result with the risk of damaging the cockpit internals. I'm going to leave mine as is, I can live with it.

I know, but I wanted to do the 100Sqn. build. ;)

Looking forward to seeing your WIP on the Fee.
Good luck!

Looking forward to it Pete - there's a veritable squadron of Fee's here at the moment!!

Thanks guys, I'll try my best.

Hi Pete
I think the biggest issue, rigging aside is how you deal with the wood behind the pilot. If you look at Prezmols build over at the GWITA forum you'll see what I mean as I'm not articulating it very well.

I primed the wings etc on mine last night - boy this is going to be a big model! The good thing is, that whilst the rigging looks very complicated, there will be plenty of space to work with.
Perhaps Des could create a forum area to put this Fee "squadron" all together?

Hi Ian, did you have any problem with this?

I haven't got that far yet, but I think I'll live with the small gaps round the edges of this part. Prez blended his perfectly, but I fear I'd make it worse by trying...

I'm working on the early version, and had been forewarned about the challenge posed by getting the back wall of the pilot's cockpit (part B24) into place. While I didn't find the fit to be bad at all, it does leave a very visible join line where it simply shouldn't be in real life.
My solution was to glue the piece into place on the right side of the cockpit before closing up the nacelle. I chose to glue it into the right side as I wanted to add the wiring that comes off the control levers on the right side, and adding those after the nacelle was closed would have been much more challenging. Once the piece was glued in place, I filled and sanded the seam, and went ahead and painted all the wood grain.
Then, after the nacelle was closed up, I was left with a pretty minor gap to fill. In order to avoid damage to the completed wood grain, I used Apoxie Sculpt "Super White" epoxy putty to fill the gap. Then, before the putty set, I used a wet Q-tip (cotton bud) to remove the excess. All the excess was removed with no damage to the existing paint and leaving only a thin white line that needed to be painted to match the surrounding wood grain, which was very easy.

Thanks guys, obviously something to watch out for when I start.
Another quick question, what have or what do you intend to use for the rigging, internal and external, because being RFC there won't be any turnbuckles involved, or if any very few.
Cheers
Pete.
-
Pete,
You can use 1mm lengths of tube with eyelets to replicate the attachment points.
Rig with Maxima 2lb line. ;)
BVB
-
I'm using the RAF rigging line available on the WNW website. It is very much like EZ Line but I reckon I can get away without painting it.
-
Well there's certainly no shortage of W.I.P. threads on this machine. I'm getting dizzy. :o

A quick question to all Fee builders, in the instructions I notice that the part B14, which I assume is the filler pipe for the 24 gal. main tank (B15), is not mentioned at all, it doesn't appear that this part will be seen but have you guys assembled it?
Cheers
Pete.
-
Hi Pete, the part B14 is installed on page 15, in Section 8 Nascelle Details. I haven't got that far in my build yet.....
-
Good luck Pete, it's een a great kit so far, bit it is also rather big, have fun!

The first update on the Fee, I've been working on the wood in and around the cockpit, it seems to be never ending.

Great progress on your Fee my old friend. Excellent wood work to date.

I'm watching all of these FE.2b threads intently, awaiting the arrival of my kit. From what I'm seeing it looks like a daunting undertaking as there appears to be so much detail to paint. You have a sharp, clean looking build coming along here Pete so don't get exasperated and start to rush things. Leave that pitfall for me. ;D
Cheers,
Chris
-
Thanks for the votes of confidence guys, don't worry Chris I'm not rushing things but I will warn you now when your kit arrives you will find about a Kilo of plastic in the box. ???
Cheers
Pete.
-
nice start Pete, compared to the Albie how long do you expect this build to be. I rfancy getting one of these as well because I've been impressed with the builds I've seen so far, but I reckon this is about a 5-6 monther.
Have you decided what to do about the bit behind the pilot seat.
Cheers Gary
-
Hi Gary, this looks like a long build, I've been on it for 11 days now and I'm still on page 1/2 of the instruction book, but there again I don't rush along with my builds, how long will it take? I honestly don't know, but go for it, get one, there's about a Kilo of plastic will land on your doorstep with hundreds of parts.
Good luck
Cheers
Pete.
-
. . . there's about a Kilo of plastic will land on your doorstep with hundreds of parts.
Mine just arrived, along with a copy of The FE2B Flies Again! and you're not kidding. The part count looks quite daunting. It certainly does look exquisite though.
Cheers,
Chris

Good luck with your build Chris.

Hi Gary, I see N.C.S.E. has put the bit behind the pilots seat ok in his build, I wonder what he did?

Fine work on those wooden parts Pete :)

Thanks Ian.
Cheers
Pete.

Hi Pete,
Nice progress so far on the cockpit parts.
I'm looking forward to more
Best Regards

Thanks Keith, more on the way, but it's a slow build, so much detail in this baby.
Cheers
Pete.

Have any of you Fee builders sorted out where to put the fire extinguishers?
Cheers
Pete.
-
Hi Pete,
I had no idea, so I left them out... If you find out, let us know as I haven't buttoned up the nascelle yet.

Masterful work!
Let us know if you "crack the code" on storage and display. Presently I have not been tempted as I wouldn't be able to fit it into my cabinet; she's a big beast!

That's beautiful, Pete. I love the different types of wood you've painted, in particular- it's a skill I'm trying to master and you've done it so well.
Dal.
-
Hi Dal, thanks for the comment, what do you paint your wood with?
Cheers
Pete.
-
Pete, I usually use a woodish-coloured matt paint. So far I've used Tamiya 79, Mr Hobby 66, Humbrol 110 (the floor of the Spad I've just started) and Humbrol 98 as a base and a mix of raw sienna, burnt sienna and burnt umber, with a touch of Naples Yellow, for the grain. None have given me the light, yellowish finish you've managed to achieve in this build. That's a colour I'd like to get close to painting- it looks just like varnished oak. I think I'll try a lighter base (Mr Colour 85 or Humbrol Authentics Linen- yes, I still have a tin) and perhaps a raw sienna and Naples yellow for the grain.
Cheers.
Dal.
-
Hi Dal, your Naples Yellow is what I call a pale yellow, where as I use Indian Yellow, which is a rich deep yellow, I mixed this with Raw Sienna to get the yellow effect on the wood, all on a base of Sand Acrylic, which is the colour of Clear Doped Linen. HTH.
Cheers
Pete.

Hi guys
There can't be many places that it would be feasible to mount a fire extinguisher in the Fee. It would be on an upright, either in the pilots cockpit or in the observers cockpit. Here is a photo of the Memorial Flight's BE2f with a period fire extinguisher

Hey Pete,
In addition to complimenting you on a really nice build so far it's also nice to see your name in "the lights" (Featured Modeller) and also to learn more about you. We are the same age, spent years on the edge of the hobby and have now returned, significantly it appears we are both Albatri fans (apparently, as they dominate your thread) and the beat goes on.
Judging from several of your builds in the Featured modeller Thread you need not apologise for your work compared to some of our more talented members, your Albies look top of the art form to me.
Cheers,
Lance :)
-
G'day, Pete.
Thanks for the info on the yellow, mate. I'll give that a go somewhere on the Spad. I like your build on the Fee, mate, and your collection on the featured modeller is really impressive.
Cheers.
Dal.
-
Hi Dal, thanks for the comments, glad I could help with the yellow.
Hi Lance, thanks for the comment, yes I must admit I do like Albatri, there are so many colourful schemes to build, you could spend a lifetime trying to build them all.
Cheers
Pete.

Lovely work on the framing and engine, Pete! Don't know how I missed this one.

Great nascelle Pete - did you need to use any filler in the join, particularly at the front end?

This morning I think I've made more bombs than your average terrorist. 8)

Thanks Gregory.

Hehe Gregory no kidding.

When it comes time to painting them, are there coloured bands required on the rounded noses of your bombs? If so, I'm finding it's a challenging job made somewhat easier when following the tutorial given here.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, it doesn't look as though there will be much modelling done in the next 2 weeks, the whole household has a severe attack of Olympomania, several tv's showing different sporting events on different channels, so I will only be paying the occasional visit.
Cheers
Pete.
-
You, know Pete, the whole nation seems to be into Olympia mania at the moment.
Pain in the you-know-where for me as I live in north Kent and I drive as part of my job. Annoyingly, a lot of the routes I need to use to get to my work sites fall as part of the Olympic route network. I can avoid as best I can (like everybody else of course) but traffic spills out elsewhere - double compounded by the fact we are now into holiday season (amateur driver on the road) as well - ahhh!!!
Never, mind, not against it entirely - will be watching the fencing (especially the epee) and the shooting as I was heavily involved in that sport for many years as well.
I will most likely get more model work done whilst Olympics dominates the TV!
Getting back on topic, your model is progressing nicely, mate - look forward to more progress reports from you.
Best regards
Dave
-
Morning all;
After the Olympic break, it's back to doing some modelling, just a case of trying to remember whats next on the list.
Cheers
Pete.
