All,
Not put up a build log for a while but have worked up the courage to post one on my build of the WNW Albie DV. I intend to mostly build OOB but have ordered some 'Bobs buckles' turnbuckles to try out on the rigging.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/014_zpsfc6b8c30.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/014_zpsfc6b8c30.jpg.html)
I also ordered the decal set for Jasta 18 and have decided (my wife Jacquie helped me chose this scheme) to opt for the Olivier Beaulieu-Marconney late 1917.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/015_zps9abdace5.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/015_zps9abdace5.jpg.html)
Just a couple of days into the build so not a great deal to show at present. The first thing I needed to do was eliminate the numerous (in awkward locations) pin holes on the inner fuselage (cockpit) by filling and then carefully sanding out as best I could when dry. All wood parts were then pre-painted with a couple of coats of 'ochre' before using artist oils to try and simulate wood grain. Used a combination of raw and burnt sienna and burnt umber. This was all completed this evening so will now need to wait a couple of days before moving on. Once dry I will then be able to seal in using clear orange followed by several coats of clear matt.

OUTSTANDING work with the oils for your wood grain! Excellent start on your DV
RAGIII

For just a few days you have made an excellent start Dave, looking forward to seeing this one unfold.
Des.

Nice beginning. The Albatros' esthetic, if you will, is the wooden construction and careful depiction of wood goes a long way to represent that. Looking forward to more progress shots.
-
Excellent start, Dave! Your wood grain looks very convincing. I'd get all the paint out of all those grooves, though, if you want everything to fit properly. I'm looking forward to following this. I just got the OAW version and hope to pick up some pointers on this kit.
Cheers,
Bud

Looking forward to this Dave. Looks like you're off to a good start!
-
Very effective Dave and I'm looking forward to seeing how it progress. I think oils over an appropriate base colour are just the thing for capturing a wood effect. As others have said be sure to clean paint from locating surfaces because the tolerances are very tight
Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks, all
Forgot to mention that before applying any paint, I carefully filled all the grooves (for all the formers) using liquid latex masking solution. This is why the grooves look very thick and dark in the photos. My theory being that I can simply pick out without having to scrape out paint from the grooves.
Thanks for looking.

Dave

Your painting is great.

I'll be pulling up a chair for this one Dave. Cunning fellow, getting your wife involved in the build. ;)

Sorry I missed this one. Your painting looks very good and if the rest of the model follows suit then you will have done a first class job.
-
Thank you all kindly - appreciate having you all aboard!
Not a great deal of progress to report at present. Once the oil paint had dried, I sealed in with clear orange followed by several coats of clear. Whilst this was drying, I knocked up a rough'n ready seat cushion made from Milliput.
The next stage was to paint in some of the other details in the cockpit and the engine formers. I then painted the seat and installed on the base mount. I've also carefully picked out the dried latex mask from the groves in the fuselage where all the framework will sit. Overall this worked well and just needed to touch in the adjacent areas where some paint was pulled away whilst removing.
The next stage will be to start work on assembling some of the cockpit.

One word of advice, if I may: the "firewall" (the part to which the seat will be attached) had not been made out of wood, but out of fabric. Rule of thumb: If the aircraft is covered with Flugzeugstoff, then it is likely the "firewall" would be covered with lozenge fabric as well. If the wings were not covered with Flugzeugstoff, but painted with the standard colours (green and mauve), the firewall would be CDL.
Stefan

Thanks, Stefan -
I simply followed the paint guide within the instructions. That being the case then, I'll repaint this part CDL as you suggest.

All,
A bit of real progress now as I have started work on building up the cockpit. I took Stefan's advice and glued on some paper over the the bulkhead behind the seat painted beige to represent the fabric.
Made an attempt at knocking up the switch things on the small panel on the starboard cockpit - not brilliant, but just adds a bit of interest I hope. Also made start on on some rigging to the control column using stretched sprue.

Next update:
Completed the engine. I intend to have the cowling panels closed up on this one so have not gone overboard on detail. I've just added small bits that will be visible. Therefore added spark plugs (stretched sprue), ignition leads (bronze brown cotton thread) and the tubing/plumbing thing at the very front of the engine.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/002_zps6a8e4c96.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/002_zps6a8e4c96.jpg.html)
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/001_zps805f66c3.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/001_zps805f66c3.jpg.html)
Whilst waiting for the engine components to set/dry, made up the formers for the engine mount. To ensure this all aligned correctly, dry mounted inside the fuselage half.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/003_zpseaece205.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/003_zpseaece205.jpg.html)
Once all had set, fitted the completed engine in the mount and then glued all into the slots in the fuselage. Dry mounting paid off here as it simply sat into place nice and snug without too much shunting about to get a good fit.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/004_zpsae2ec651.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/004_zpsae2ec651.jpg.html)
I then left this set for a bit before finally glued on the other fuselage half - everything fitted nicely.

I have not left this all this to set over night. Tomorrow I will tidy up the join before applying some model filler.
More to follow in due course.

Many thanks, folks -
Quite a bit of progress now. Tidied up the fuselage joints using model filler. I then fitted the lower wings and tailplane. To start the painting work, I have used 'ochre' as basecoat as nearest colour to wood. I can then paint over this with the subsequent top coats. With this version, I need to simulate the fuselage cross and fin aircraft number faintly showing through the blue top coat - could be a challenge brush painting - we'll see.
Once the base coat had dried overnight, I was able to draw (using pencil) out the outline edging I will need to follow for each of the different colour lines. I can then follow these the drawn lines with my brush. I do this because if I use masking tape, I end up with a distinct paint edge which looks awful. Doing it this way, the different colours match evenly and look more realistic - I just have to carefully following the line freehand and touch up as necessary.
First top coat is the lightest colour first (the light blue underside) as easier to paint dark colours over light as opposed to the other way round.
I did have a series of photos of the various stages but have somehow managed to delete from the camera by mistake. I therefore had to take new pictures at the point I am up to now. Not great pictures unfortunately, but gives you an idea of where I am up to.

All,
Recent work has focused mainly on the painting of the fuselage in stages. Placed the cross and serial number decals to fuselage and fin onto the base coat. The dark blue was then painted over the decals when dry. The aim was to achieve these markings showing faintly through the blue top coat. Unfortunately, this has not worked out as well as I would have liked. The markings are very faintly showing to the point you can barely see them - disappointing but I will have to live with this now.
After top coat dried, I applied the remaining decals. Assembled the elevator (and rigged this), rudder, MG's, cowling panels, flare rack, etc. Even knocked up a rack so I could add in the flare pistol as I thought it a shame not to use.
If honest though, a bit disappointed in my fuselage painting which has not come out as smooth as I would have liked. I also think my choice of blue may be darker than it should be - oh well!
Bob's Buckles tubes used on the elevator rigging - my first attempt at using these. Took me a couple of attempts to get right, but mastered it in the end. They certainly seem to make rigging a bit easier. I'm actually looking forward to rigging (not my favorite part of the build) and using them in earnest.
Pictures below of the various stages

Thank you all very kindly - I really do appreciate all your words of encouragement and pleased to have your along for the ride!
BTW - regarding my brush painting - I've recently joined a local model club (Gravesham Military Modellers) and I'm (currently) the only WW1 aircraft model builder. Last weekend was my second visit to the club (we meet every month) and I was asked to bring along some of my models. All the other members stated that they could not believe I brush paint (they all liked the smooth finish, shading and weathering) and said I ought to enter some competitions. My recently completed WNW SE5a was especially well received. One member was particularly impressed by the wood effect to the prop stating it actually looked like real wood. To say I was over the moon by these positive comments was a real boost to my confidence.
One of the members has a couple of WW1 kits (WNW LVG and Revell/Eduard Bristol Fighter) and asked if I would help when he builds these ........ I will try and point him to this forum as I feel there are better model advisors here.
More progress on this build in due course.
Regards
Dave

Sorry but I have been catching up with this thread - my there is some wonderful work here especially the smaller details that take a model from a kit to something a little extra (and sometimes even more than that). Wonderful paintwork - especially with a brush. I am sure that your models would win in competitions because that are so well made and the finish is so good. Keep up the good work.

Thank you, LM!
Just some small progress to report. Painted underside of lower wing and applied decals. In between painting, hollowed out the end of the exhaust by drilling, trimming with model knife and tidying by using oval file.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/002_zps64702338.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/002_zps64702338.jpg.html)
This was then painted up and attached to engine when completed.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/008_zpsd3b52668.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/008_zpsd3b52668.jpg.html)
Had a go at knocking up the grab handles at the end of the fuselage. Accomplished by twisting 5 amp fuse wire to create a cord/rope effect. Attached to fuselage by making an eyelet from same wire - drilled into fuselage (where they needed to go) and super glued these eyelets in place. I then threaded through my twisted wire, twisted ends and glued in place on the eyelet. Handles painted leather brown.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/004_zps4b8cf61a.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/004_zps4b8cf61a.jpg.html)
Hopefully these don't look to bad?
Will paint the upper surface of the lower wing tomorrow evening all being well.

Very fine work indeed. Those look like real grab handles and the exhaust also looks ver good.

Martin/LM - Thank you both
Top side of lower wing was first painted in the purple and green camoflage marking. Once dry, over painted in the dark blue in attempt to achieve the base colours showing through the top coat. This has worked but is not visible as I would have liked. This nows completes the fuselage and lower wing.

Quick update -
Top wing installed and have made a start on the main wing rigging. Rigging was accomplished by using 'Bobs Buckles' turnbuckles - my first attempt at using these. I've made a few mistakes fitting them (sorry Bob!) but I really got to grips with them after a while. In fact, using these made rigging a lot easier and quicker. I really like them! - hopefully, by my next build, I will make a neater job with them.

All,
Been working on the prop since my last update. This is how I painted up the prop to represent laminated wood starting with the bare kit part
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/002_zps0138e718.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/002_zps0138e718.jpg.html)
After cleaning up the kit part, painted two coats of ochre

Once base coat had dried, used fine paint brush to paint in the laminate wood bands using Revell 'wood brown' on top of the base coat thus - lamination painted free handed and no masking used - just touched up where required until I was happy with overall result

Left over night before applying artist oil (mix of burnt Sienna and umber) over the prop to blend in and achieve overall wood tone effect. oil paint was drawn out using both large, coarse brush then smoothed out with softer brush thus

Prop was then left to dry for a couple of days. Once dry, sealed in with coat of clear orange. Prop decals applied when dry. This was then followed by four coats of semi gloss clear cote. This is the end result

Did not overly worry about to fine a job of painting the boss as this will not be seen once spinner installed - just painted in for sake of completeness.

Hello Dave:
Just now catching up a bit on the forum: You really did an outstanding job on this model. I have to keep telling myself it is brushpainted! The prop is really the cats pajama's; just an outstanding job of painting to achieve the desired wood affect.
It does take a bit to get used to using Herr Bucklemeisters Accoutrements; but once used, never go back!
Outstanding all around.
Best

You've produced a lovely Albie Dave.
The paint job is awesome - something to aspire to for when I eventually do some hand painted modelling, though I'll never reach your lofty heights ;)
The technique for the prop is outstanding - you have a very good eye and steady hand!!

Thank you for your kind words regarding my painting, Andrew -
Honestly, brush painting is not as difficult as you think - just thin the paint and build up in layers.

Dave
