Hi all after all the fun I had putting the WNW Gotha together and doing well with it at the Illawara show I'm well and truly bitten by this whole WW1 modeling thing.
I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into my next WingNuts build. This being my 3rd first war build I've managed complete the build and still retain whats left of my thining scalp. Every time a build one of these Wing nut kits I'm striving to make that next one that bit better. The Gotha had alot to improve on.
To date I've managed to complete the bulk of the cockpit assembly with the exception of the rigging for the control colomn and footpedal cables as well as finishing the airframe rigging.
Love to hear your comments good and bad please.

Your cockpit looks great :) Good to have another Fee to follow - this is proving a popular model!

The popularity of this kit is really interesting considering that pushers are among the most difficult of WWI models. You're off to a brilliant start on yours, Sean. I'm really looking forward to watching your progress.
Cheers,
Bud

Only positives from me Sean, the cockpit looks great ;)

Sean,
What can I say other than Outstanding progress my friend. I'm looking forward to follow your thread too.

I really like the look of it so far, I'm at about the same stage in my build too.
Does anyone know if it is just the Late that gets that seat cushion, because it doesn't seem like the early version gets one.
-
Beautiful work so far Sean, this will be a great follow on from your brilliant Gotha, looking forward to seeing more updates.

Airframe completed! Have I missed anything?

and a few more

Very nice start Sean,
Everything looks good to me

Brilliant start, Sean. Beautifully detailed tub.

Thats not just a great start - thats about 3 weeks work for me!!! Well done
Steve

All this looks strangely familiar... ;)
Great start, Sean!
If I may add my three pence, I would point out, that WNW completely missed two levers on the pilot's cockpit upper longerons - one on each side. They are very well documented in the cockpit photos included in the very WNW instruction book. Adding them is not a big deal but does cater for a better accuracy of this excellent kit.

Thanks Prezmol your build was what spurred me onto building this beautiful kit so thankyou (even though you advised me against building it and perhaps building something with less rigging) ! I went and bought a WNW Gotha and built that instead and rigged it as well. Mate I had a ball , it's not built anywhere near to you standard but I'm very happy with it. You may remember me over on the other forum as "camelhead"?
Anyway I'll check my references as I'm still not sure what 2 levers your talking about.
Thanks again for your very kind words.

I am flattered to hear, that my build was an inspiration to anybody. And I have seen your Gotha at WNW site. Amazing. And huge, too huge for me to fit into my model cabinet. And now, to realize, that I suggested you to build something with less rigging... I am feeling ashamed and will feel more ashamed with every update of this build... ;)
As for the levers - WNW modelled only one on the right-hand side of the cockpit. But there were two on the right-hand side and one on the left-hand side. Funny, they have even included the decals with plates describing the positions of these levers (e.g Advance-Retard) but not the levers. Just check the photos of the TVAL replica cockpit in the instruction book.
Pity, you are not coming to ModelExpo in Melbourne. Would be great to meet you ther with your Gotha...
-
Thanks Prez I go to Model Expo in melbourne every year but this year is out for me Bugger!!! Do you live in Australia now or are you going to be visiting? I had a look at the levers and now see what you are talking about. Problem is I've now closed the Fuselage halves up but I should still be able to fix the problem.
Sean
-
Still, it is a pity you cannont make it for Melbourne this year.
As for me, I am going to Down Under to participate, visit two aviation museums in Melbourne and AWM in Canberra. And possibly to see the 12 Apostles.
I am sure you will be able to add the levers even with the nacelle closed. Looking forward to see the following build updates.
-
It would have been really great to have meet you I feel really disappointed now but Melbourne Expo was just to close NSW expo which I just attended.
I wanted to attend the NSW show this year as I've never been. I don't regret it at all as it was a great show and I'll be there again next year.
You will love the Melbourne show it's very well organised and held in a great Venue. Also Point cook and Morrabin Aviation Museums.
If you have some extra time to spare please call into my home your more than welcome but I do live somewhat out of the way some 600km from Melbourne . You will also love the drive along the great ocean road and the 12 apostles.

First rate start, Sean, and I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your build! ;D

Fuselage Painted , I've also clear coated and applied the Rondels. I will give it a subtle panel wash and make a start on the Beardmore not to mention the myrid of other things which still need to be done to the Fuselage.
Sean

That looks awesome Sean and at an amazing pace!!!!

Fantastic job on the nacelle, Sean. You're really moving along on this one.

Lovely job, Sean, the nacelle looks superb.

Looking good Sean ;)
What paint did you use for the black? Ahh, just reread the thread on black paint techniques ::)
Andrew
-
Thanks fellas ;D I'll add another update later today!
Andrew I painted the Black with Tamiya Flat Black. By the time I'm finished with applying the washes etc everything starts to lighten.
Sean
-
Not very much has been done really but every small bit of progress is progress! ;D
I've applied a very subtle wash to the rear engine panels which has really bought that section to life, doesn't look as effective in the photos but it looks quite good in real life. I'm really enjoying this build and trying my hardest to pay attention to just the finest details! While attending the NSW competition a fellow competitor commented to me how nice my Gotha is but he added that a miniture map folded up and placed somewhere in the cockpit or commanders compartment would have been the finishing touch! Well I've taken his advice and done just that and put several in the gunners compartment in my Fee, Look Closely! Or does it look stupid?
Plenty more to do on the nacelle but I'm going to make a start on the Beardmore and perhaps start rigging some of the undercarrige struts etc.
Sean
-
and as usual a couple more ! ;)
-
Sean the maps look great and effective. Do you mind running us through how you made them?
Andrew
-
Thanks Andrew I didn't make em I nicked em from my Son Josh :-X. Josh is an avid Armor Modeler and has lots of little goodies in his stash like the maps I used for his Dioramas. They appear to be photo reduced onto thin non gloss paper, heres a photo of the sheet.
Sean

Andrew
Andrew, just had a look on tinternet and it seems as though Verlinden do them, they're 1/35 scale, but that shouldn't be noticeable put in to an aircraft.
Cheers
Pete.

Thanks guys - info filed for later possible use!!

Bomb Rack Finished and Rigging done. Although I feel the tubing I used may be a bit big in Diameter.
Sean

Sean,
Outstanding project my friend. I'm looking forward to the next update. Before I forget congratulations for your selection as Modeler of the Month, well done and well deserved.

Sean;
Congratulations on your modeller of the month award, very well deserved.
Cheers

I still can't believe these aircraft are so popular, cause I'm scared silly to try all that spider webbing. With my coffeine induced shaky hands, I'm quite sure I'd make a mess of the whole thing, and end up slamming it into a wall in the dungeon. My hat's off to you brave souls that tackle these things, as I will probably not.
-
Great progress on your Fee Sean, and well done with the MotM profile :) You are ahead of me with your nascelle etc so it is good to have another reference build.
Wait until you cut out the wing components, the span is huge! Whilst there is tons of rigging, there will be a fair bit of space to work with.
-
Thanks Ian yes it is big ! I've already dry fitted the lower wings and I thought it was manageable certainly know where near as big as the Gotha !
Sean
-
Sean,
Excellent work my friend. Just add water and Avgas and she's ready to cough to life.

Very neat paintwork Sean :)
I think this engine is something that WNW could have provided a few extra details for, given that it is so visible.
-
Very, very nice Sean.
What copper paint did you use?
Cheers
Pete.
-
Great colour tones on that engine!!!!
Steve
-
Lovely engine Sean.
Andrew
-
What a cracker . . . Good one
-
Thanks Fellas :D
Pete I used Tamiya Copper XF6 but I add tints of blacks to darken and silver to lighten. I also try to vary colors between each individual part.
Ian I tend to agree with you especially the Carburetor linkages.
Sean
-
I finally have my Photobucket account working now so can start posting decent sized photos! ;D
The engine is now attached to its mount. I will now finish off the other nacelle details before moving onto the wings.

last update for today The carpet monster has eaten the fuel cap and the flare tube so I've written an Email to wingnuts asking for some replacement parts. I'll leave the windscreen and guns off until the wings are fitted and rigged aside from that the Nacelle is finished!

Stunning nacelle and engine Sean, great work, well done.
Cheers
Pete.

Stunning work Sean, this really is a great kit isn't it? I originally wasn't going to do this as pushers don't tend to appeal to me, but this was a gift and I have changed my mind. Especially when I have work such as yours to follow.
Can you scratch replacements for the lost parts? I can photograph the sprues if you like, I haven't cut them off yet.
-
I just can't wait for my Fee kit to arrive, seeing all the great work on the forum.
Cheers
Pete.
-
Pete Thanks very much for your kind words and glad my work as well as the others is inspiring you to build yours when it arrives, can never have enough Fees ;)
Ian Its is a great kit isn't it! When I was building the Gotha I was having a blast but I'm really into this build. Its much more time consuming to build but I'm really enjoying the Journey along the way, although I have my other modeling commission work that I have to get on with. Thanks for your offer to photograph the parts but I got down on my hands and knees today with a torch and found both the parts ;D I've since added them to the model.
Cheers
Sean

Good news Sean - I hate losing parts to the carpet monster!
-
I lose bits on the kitchen floor and there's no carpet in there. :(
Cheers
Pete.
-
I build in the basement but somehow the attic carpet monster consumes parts...but then spits them out 3 months later when they are of absolutely no use......

Steve
My carpet monster recently spawned an evil partner. I build on the main floor and have a furnace vent in the room; in the last month or so it's gobbled up 2 Lewis Drum magazines, an Albatros wheel, and several fuel tank caps despite being covered, All but the wheel are now somewhere in the heating system downstairs! What are the odds?? (The wheel was found "on the edge" of the vent coupling and saved.)
Cheers,
Lance >:(

Beautiful work on the tub and interior!

I've made an attempt at Masking and spraying a shadow effect on the flying surfaces. The vertical ribs are the only detail moulded onto the top and bottom of the upper and lower wings so I've checked my references and masked the surfaces accordingly. With advise from Des I've done a bit of experimenting with different colors until I came up with an effect I'm happy with and this is the result. It does look dark in the photos but in the flesh it looks quite effective. What I'd like to know is your honest thoughts on the result. It's probably to late to change now as the wings are attached to the nacelle but id still like to know what you think?

Wings attached and rigging started and now looking like an Aeroplane ;D! Upper wing bracket details and pulleys etc still need to be painted and will be done free hand as things progress. Along way to go but I'll get there.

The wings look fantastic Sean - I take it you had no problem removing the masking from the roundel decals?
-
Ian Thanks Ian no chance of lifting the Decals I use a really good quality self leveling ( not future) floor polish for my clear coats. Dries with a very nice durable super thin semi sheen.
Red Baron Thanks for your honesty this is an Area I'm still experimenting in hence the reason I asked. I think for now I'm happy to go with "representation" over complete "realisim".
If I were trying to apply the effect to a CDL finish I don't think I would have had any problem but trying to achieve this effect over black was a little difficult.
Sean
-
Hi Sean,
Really nice progress and the spar and rib effects look really nice.
You are really shifting along with this build. Keep up the superb work.
Best Regards,
Keith
-
Tricking the eye with black tones is difficult but I think you have achieved it. Like you say, in the flesh the effect works.
Steve
-
Keith Thanks very much Keith ! I've been home on holidays for 2 weeks so I've had plenty of time to work on her. Everything else has suffered though!
Steve Thankyou also I do think it looks good. As you say it is hard to achive realistic tones but it looks effective. I haven't applied the colors on the heavy side just very subtley.
Next update will be the rigged upper and lower main wings.
Sean
-
Managed to get the rigging finished on the wings. now onto rigging the tail and rear boom. Thanks for looking in.

Your rigging is excellent Sean, this is turning out brilliantly.

Brilliant job Sean, love the rigging.

Sean,
Brilliantly done, I've been following along particularly to glean some hints on working with black color schemes. I believe you've "nailed it" on this subject and it will help me a lot with my DV build. As for the rigging, as I said on the other Fee Thread, "takes a much braver soul then I to tackle a Fee"!!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Sean,
You should give your rigging spiders a bonus for such awesome work my friend. Outstanding project from the beginning to the present.

Thanks people shes all finished now ;D I'll endevour to get some pics up at some stage, many thanks to all of you who followed along.
