Title: SSW D.I Conversation in 1:48
Post by: radio on September 23, 2014, 11:58:15 PM
Just waiting for Lozenge decals from Aviattic for my Group build I will build a rare aircraft.
I take two kits from Eduard for this conservation/ scratchbuild. They are the Nieuport N16 and N17.
It will be the early SSW D.I plane from Ltn Karl Schäfer Jasta 11.
The scale plane are from Jack Harris book Siemens-Schuckert Aircraft of WWI.

Bo we will see what time it use.
Today I began with it. The wings, rudder and tailplane come from the N 16 and the fuselage from the N 17.

Thank you Bud.
Change the fuselage from N 17 to N 16. Just more work but correcter.
The rudder and tail cut from plasticard.
The new rear spur is made out of copper wire.

I have made a stencil for the front body area.
The fuselage was shortened and reduced in the rear area by the height. In front I have removed the engine partition and have inserted a new one.
The engine cover was changed and a new final area was made for it.
The cockpit interior arrangement is taken over wide going from the N 16 because there are no pictures from D I. Changes are a German seat and belts.

This is going to be a really interesting model! If I remember correctly some guy a few months ago was trying to sell a SSW D.I model for a tremendous price - something like 600 $ more or less - Radio just think how much money you save by using Eduard Nieuports instead ;)

Hi Martin
I did this one myself a few years ago using sketchy information and the Testors Neiuport 17 kit. I could only guess the colours but one thing I am sure I got wrong was the machine gun arrangement. I was and still am pleased with what I finished up with even though it may be a little inacurate, this is after all a great looking plane. I will be really interested to see your one come together especially since it will most certainly be more accurate than mine.
Cheers, Alan.

Control cable attached, painted belt buckles and bent. Then underbody glued. The interior is completed with MG belt box, air pump and MG -deduction cable.
Both fuselage halves glued together.
On the sloping rear engine, front made additional part and shaft and glued to the right motor length to have.
Made of balsa wood and plastic to create the residual magnetic / ignition area. As you can see in the pictures is the whole front of the engine.

Have the engine cleaned the seams and will of Taurus models use spark plugs. To the magnet I have spark plug wire attached.
The hull I continued sanded down. Introduced rear Putty for the tail skid and adjusted and glued down two new plastic plates.
The front the inner diameter of the engine is increased.

Yesterday and today I have filled in the body and have sanded.
The headrest smaler smoothed and glued.
Front body area further conformistly and bonnet as well as sides form parts stuck on. If these are dry they are further stuck together.
The lower wing was saw in three parts and both cut and sanded to correct size.
The ignition system was further improved and varnished. It is stuck later on the inside of the bonnet. The air-screw impulse goes by them through and remains movable.
The engine was provided with spark plugs, cable and pestle poles and was painted.

The ignition system is changed. The magnets are put on 0. 2 mm plasticcard and are sharpened whole even more thinly, so that the whole fits under the front cover.
Tail skid glue inside.
The front body part ready with the form parts glue together, fills in and sanded. Now the engine fits well in and can be turned. Now fits the fuselage form.
Additional engine end sawed out and with the other sticks together.
Rudder andl tailplane unit with pulled plastic threads to the rib representation closes.  8)

Great stuff Martin, especially in 1/72 scale!  You are creating an interesting model of an unusual aircraft.  Your conversion work is first rate.  Thanks for sharing this.  Very nicely done! ;D

Nice colours Martin, very different from the regular ones we see so much of. That, along with the very unique subject will make this a very nice addition to your collection. Keep those updates coming!

Upper surface in the external braces stuck on.
The insides come if the external ones are dry.
Will try to make for the first time an air-screw from 3 mm of wood (here multilayer plywood) itself.
After saw and sanding one side is nearly ready.

Little update
all wires are bound to the wings.
And the wheeels are glue to the plane.
What to do: paint the wires, Make the prop ready and glue the control struts to the aileron.

Martin,

I have been so focused on moving my Eindecker build along that I have not been keeping up on this (and many other) threads.  Your build looks fantastic!  I love the scheme, and your modification efforts have really paid off.  I can't compare the OOB WnW modeling I am doing with something like this.  Great stuff.
