Title: Roden 1:32 Dr.1 - glacial pace build
Post by: Whiteknuckles on May 29, 2012, 01:56:19 PM
Greetings one and all.

It's time to bite the bullet and get my build of the Roden 1:32 Dr.1 up and running. As part of actually my a into g, is getting this post started in order to embarrass myself into getting started!! ::)
Some caveats first - I'm not a skilled modeller so it will be OOB, it will be a very slow build due to time constraints (hence the 'glacial pace'), I'll probably be asking lots of very newbie questions :) , I'll be brush painting, it wont be accurate (obviously) and my main aim is too have fun and use it as a learning/testing model in terms of techniques/painting etc.

Unboxed - it's all present and accounted for!!

Unless experienced hands tell me otherwise, my aim is to finish it as 450/17, Jasta 7, Ltn. Josef Carl Jacobs, Summer 1918. I'm not a huge fan of the Fokker streaked look and think this one is more interesting - although getting the black to look right might be a hurdle...

More to follow.

Hi, Andrew,

A number of forumites have built this kit, so you won't lack for any answers and suggestions. There are a couple of amendments to be made to the instructions. I think that I can find the thread: if so, I'll post the link here. Nothing serious, but they ought to help a bit. If anyone else beats me to it, then well done you and we'll get the info for Andrew that much quicker!

As to the finish of the model, my gratuitous suggestion is to use more than one shade of black. One shade only will not look "right," especially in a large scale like 1/32nd. This point can be refined as you progress through the project, on which I offer you my best wishes for success!  ;D

Got one: http://kits.kitreview.com/roden601reviewrb_1.htm

This review gives a few of the changes required: mislabelled parts, filling of the tailplane depression, removal of axle fairing detail, cowling shortcomings, and so on. There may be more, but these are the ones I recall from my build (a few years ago). Again, good luck, Andrew!

Thanks for the support gents, very much appreciated.

@Trackpad - thanks for that link and the painting tips. I've had the kit for a while - an impulse buy after repeated visits to Des' main site :D. Since then I've collated a few resources on building Roden's Dr.1 including an extensive PDF called 'Improving the Fokker Dr.1' by Claudio Kalicinski from Modeler Site. It outlines the faults you mention and many improvements. I know I said I'd build OOB, but I may try some of the fixes.

I'm not liking the plastic pushrods for the engine and my fat fingeredness managed to slightly damage the exhaust ring >:(. So I'm going to attempt some mods - nothing major mind you. My already great respect for those of you working and detailing in smaller scales has gone through the roof!!

Progress so far has been basically:
~ the seat, which I'm rounding the edges of somewhat and fashioning a very basic cushion for;
~ the fuel tank (Claudio adds an oil filler cap and a fuel gauge which I'm not going to attempt as it requires mods to the front decking) &
~ starting the engine (one part was broken in the kit, it appears to allow the engine and prop to rotate when constructed? Fixed now)

Finally got a dedicated sprue cutter and files this morning so that will help things along!!

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi,

I was going to post this thread link for you, regarding your proposed colour scheme: http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=410.0

Then I noticed that you'd already seen it, so, of course, I won't have to post it after all...!  ???

Good luck with your build Andrew and don't forget, you said it in your first post, it's "FUN".

Cheers

Its always interesting to see how each craftsman deals with this interesting machine.

I’ll be following along and enjoying your work as you proceed.

I keep eyeballing my Encore kit, considering doing another one, this time much better than the last one though. I made many, many mistakes on the first that I can now (hopefully), avoid on the second big Dr.I.

I've seen many Dr.I's built on these type forums (all scales), in the past, and I tend to like them all, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how you handle this dark machine; ought to be really cool.

I had a good trawl on the net last night looking at other Roden 1:32 Dr.1 builds. Lots of builds out there!!
I found Claudio Kalicinski's build log on Aeroscale (on which he's known as Kalt) which flesh's out the PDF article i mentioned previously quite nicely. It's very easy to get lost in all the detail - I need to keep on reminding myself that I need to get the basics down pat first!! (I'm no craftsman Paddy, that's for sure).

Back at work now after 4 weeks of annual leave. My workplace is undergoing some major changes over the next month and I'll be retraining for life back on the fire trucks so my time will be even more limited :(

No real progress to report I'm afraid, due to work and domestic demands  :(

However, I was all ready to try some engine detailing and other stuff today and cannot for the life of me find the instructions. I have a sheet of paper that I transcribed the paint details on to take to my hobby shop but the instructions were not with them.

Thus can I request someone possibly copy them for me?

Please PM me if able to help (I will pay for postage, etc).

Thanks in advance,

Andrew
